Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Rose’s Backlash and the Sleeping Legend

While the world outside moved with the rhythmic pace of seasons, the Werewolf Clan was a hive of frantic activity. The preparations for the Lunar Heart Competition had reached a fever pitch. This was no longer just a local trial of strength; it was a grand declaration of the clan's resurgence. Invitations etched in gold and infused with spirit ink were being dispatched by the clan's highest-ranking Elders to the Ten Great Clans. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation and the scent of impending war—both on the stage and beyond the borders.

But far from the glittering decorations of the Werewolf capital, deep within the heart of the mountain where King Xiao Leo's legacy breathed, a different kind of struggle was unfolding.

The Four Months of Heavenly Stillness

Inside the ancient cave, time had ceased to exist for Alpha and Alya. For four grueling months, they sat like statues, their breathing synchronized with the pulsating glow of the Heavenly Rose.

The rose hovered between them, its translucent petals vibrating with a frequency that bypassed the physical ear and spoke directly to the soul. It was a treasure of the highest order, a remnant of a celestial era. Day after day, the two cultivators drew from its essence.

Alya used the energy to temper her Nascent Soul, her ice-cold aura becoming so sharp it could cut through stone without a touch.

Alpha, however, was undergoing a more violent transformation. The energy was being forced into his marrow, reinforcing the High-Grade Werewolf Physique he had recently forged.

On the final day of the fourth month, a sudden, soundless explosion of light filled the cavern. The Heavenly Rose vanished, its physical form entirely converted into pure spiritual essence.

Alpha and Alya opened their eyes simultaneously. For a brief second, their gazes met—a silent acknowledgment of the strength they had gained.

"Alpha," Alya whispered, her voice carrying a newfound authority. "What is your realm now? Can you feel the breakthrough?"

The Agony of the Rootless

Alpha opened his mouth to answer, but instead of words, a blood-curdling scream tore through his lungs.

"AAAAAGGGHHH!"

Alpha collapsed forward, clutching his chest as if his heart were being ripped out by an invisible hand. His veins began to bulge beneath his skin, glowing with a chaotic, erratic blue light. It wasn't just pain; it was an internal demolition.

"Alpha!" Alya's heart skipped a beat. She rushed to him, catching him before he hit the jagged stone floor. She laid him down, her hands trembling as she felt the heat radiating from his body. "Alpha, look at me! Control your energy! Recirculate it!"

She immediately channeled her own Royal Bloodline energy, trying to bridge their meridians. "Royal Bloodline... listen to me! Save him! Transfer my stability to him!"

But there was no response. Alpha's body began to convulse. Every muscle was locked in a spasm of agony. The energy he had absorbed from the Heavenly Rose was like an ocean trying to fit into a narrow stream. It was thrashing against his insides, seeking an exit that didn't exist.

"It's not working... why isn't it working?!" Alya cried, her eyes filling with tears of desperation. She saw Alpha's skin starting to crack, tiny flickers of spiritual light leaking out of his pores. He was literally bursting at the seams.

Driven by a primal instinct, Alya did the only thing she could think of to stabilize a Dao Partner. She leaned down and pressed her lips against his. She tried to suck the excess energy out of his lungs, to take the burden of the "Rose's Backlash" onto herself. She held the kiss for a long time, her soul reaching out to his, but the fire inside Alpha only burned hotter.

The Desperate Sacrifice

Alya realized with a jolt of horror that Alpha's physical vessel was failing. The Heavenly Rose was a treasure meant for those with divine foundations; on Alpha, it was a beautiful poison.

"I won't let you die," she sobbed, her voice a mix of fury and love. "I won't let the world take you back."

Seeing that the external energy transfer was failing, Alya made a choice that most cultivators would consider madness. She realized that only a total Yin-Yang Synchronization could save him. She quickly divested both of them of their heavy robes, her movements frantic yet precise.

She gathered him into her arms, their skin meeting in a desperate attempt to balance the scorching heat of his body with the cooling ice of her own. She carried him toward the subterranean spring at the back of the cave—the Lunar Spring—and dove into the freezing waters.

Hours passed in the chilling darkness of the water. Alya used every ounce of her Nascent Soul cultivation to act as a heat sink, absorbing the violent spiritual waves radiating from Alpha's heart. By the time they emerged, Alpha's convulsions had stopped, but he remained deathly pale, his breathing shallow. Alya, exhausted and shivering, used her Qi to dry them and dress him back in his robes.

The King's Revelation

As Alya sat by his side, wondering if she had truly saved him or only delayed the inevitable, a shimmering golden light began to coalesce in the center of the cave. The Remnant Soul of King Xiao Leo appeared, his expression unusually grim.

Alya immediately threw herself to the ground, bowing her head. "Great Ancestor! Please... look at him! What is happening to Alpha? Why did the rose turn against him?"

The King looked down at Alpha, his translucent eyes filled with a mixture of pity and admiration. "He is fighting a battle that shouldn't be possible to win, child. The reason for his collapse is simple: Alpha Khan has no Spiritual Roots."

Alya froze. "No roots? But... he has reached the Blood Tempering realm! He has the Obsidian Arm! How can he cultivate without roots?"

"Through sheer willpower and my bloodline," the King explained, his voice echoing with sorrow. "But a body without roots is like a house built on sand. It can hold a small amount of weight, but the Heavenly Rose is a mountain. Usually, a rootless body would have exploded the moment it touched such a treasure. The only reason he is still alive is because of the time he spent with you—your energy acted as a temporary anchor. But now, after four months of solo refinement, that anchor has snapped."

Alya's voice broke. "Then tell me how to fix it! I will do anything. I will give him my own roots if I have to!"

The Sleeping Lunar Warrior

The King sighed, a sound that seemed to carry the weight of eons. "There is a way, but it is a path that few women would ever choose to walk. It involves a sacrifice of the heart as much as the soul."

"Tell me," Alya demanded, her golden eyes flashing with resolve. "There is nothing in this world more precious to me than his life."

"Listen well," the King said. "Deep within the hidden chambers of this tomb, there lies a Lunar Warrior. She was my most loyal general, a woman I loved as if she were my own daughter. She has been in a state of suspended animation—a deep, spiritual sleep—for over a thousand years."

Alya stepped back, her mind reeling. "A Lunar Warrior? But the legends say the Lunar Legion perished with you in the Great War! How can one still be alive?"

"I sealed her," the King admitted. "I saved her for a day when the clan would need a protector, and when a King would need a sword. Her name is Lian, and she possesses the Celestial Yin Root. She is the only one who can 'route' the overflowing energy within Alpha and create an artificial root system for him."

He paused, looking deeply into Alya's eyes. "But to do this, she must be awakened. And once she awakens, she will be bound to Alpha in a way that will change the dynamic between you three forever. She is not just a protector; she is a soul-tether. Are you prepared to share his destiny with another?"

Alya looked at the unconscious Alpha. She remembered the boy who had cried in her lap, the man who had stood his ground against the Great Elder, and the partner who had promised to be her wall.

"If she can save him," Alya said, her voice steady despite the ache in her chest, "then wake her up. I don't care about the legends or the consequences. Just save him."

The King nodded slowly. "Then prepare yourself, Xiao Alya. The era of the single Monarch is over. The Lunar Trinity is about to begin."
