Chapter 8 - Walking In Darkness

Sun reached the point of setting and they reached the cave.

"Althar you still not going to tell what are you trying to do? If it is burning it using those stalks of grass you carrying then forget it. It is hopeless." Village chief spoke while looking towards the cave somberly.

Kael shook his head. "You will know shortly... just pray that I succeed or else it won't be long before the whole village will succumb to darkness."

The other three already knew about their grim situation. They all were just delaying the inevitable.

"There is one thing I can tell you though..." Kael began to explain to them how this monster hunted them and when the village chief and both old men heard that they were a little stunned.

Everything sounded quite believable and they also understood that Althar had thought through everything very clearly. Village chief spoke immediately.

"Althar, tell us what you want to do. We will help. The chances will be higher."

Kael sighed and still denied. "The thing I want to do is something only I can do. Helping me is impossible. Don't worry. In the rare case I fail I have written another way you can try to get rid of this abomination. It is on the closest tree to the edge of the crater."

The village chief and old men shook their heads.

"Now then if you guys go a little further, night is about to fall." Kael didn't want any kind of intervention.

All three of them nodded and moved a little further while Kael came as close as possible to the entrance of the cave. He was still holding the stalks of grass and the torch.

He looked towards the other three. One of the old men was preparing the torch while the other two were looking at him.

"Young man you should prepare that torch. The sun is about to set." The village chief spoke when he saw that he wasn't doing anything.

Kael looked towards the setting sun and nodded. He sat down and wrapped only two stalks of grass and seeing this the chief frowned again but didn't say anything.

Even two stalks could burn for a while.

A few minutes later both groups ignited their torches and Kael put his torch on the ground and stood up. The sun was definitely a few seconds away from setting.

He looked towards the three pairs of eyes looking at him and smiled. "It was nice meeting you all. May I succeed and you all become free from the unavoidable fate."

The moment he finished speaking dense darkness covered the world.

They were still visible to each other but very faintly. Kael stretched himself and turned to look towards the cave and grabbed the stalks tightly before smiling. 'You love eating right? Let me see if you can digest me...'

He took a step forward and left the range of light.

Immediately he felt dissociation from reality. He began losing the feel of his own body. It was as if he was being caged into a corner and was only allowed to see through the backseat.

'As expected, it is definitely a parasitic attack.'

Although he was forced into the backseat he still smiled. There was an inherent feeling that he would be able to fight this control to take control for himself, even if it was for a mere second.

This was what he was hoping for. In the end he was also occupying this body instead of it being his own.

So right now it was like this body was just being occupied by two parasites. One was him while the other was this abomination.

No doubt this monster was far stronger than him but he wasn't alone. He was able to occupy the body with the help of Genesis. It was impossible to push him out of it.

Just as he was thinking he began walking in the darkness. He couldn't see but he knew that the next step he would be taking would be on the thorny vines.

...

"What the devil? Did he just leave the protection of light by his own accord?" The village chief was in disbelief as he shouted.

The other two were wide-eyed too.

"A pity... was this his plan, dying? What was he thinking that the plant would eat the flaming grass and somehow it would magically ignite?"

"Sigh... if only he had told it earlier. It's not like we haven't tried..."

They did have tried that and the monster had even eaten the flaming grass but it spit out the grass in the water without breaking them.

....

Kael was cursing the whole generation of the vines right now while feeling the pain he never even imagined to feel in his life. Every step of his landed on the thorny vines and they were absurdly painful. He could only wail mentally as physically it wasn't possible.

After a few steps he finally crossed it. Since he stopped moving, a sweet fragrance hit his nostrils before he felt that something soft and silky wrapped around him from all directions.

If he wasn't wrong then this was the petals of the flower and he was seconds away from getting eaten. It was time.

'Sigh I have just gone through one pain. Now the second one is going to engulf me... I hope my tendencies didn't get changed to masochist... here goes nothing.'

He immediately influenced his control over the pollen's control. He didn't even try to gain control over the whole body. He just went for the hands.

He immediately felt connection with his hands ,he also felt sudden hindrance but... it wasn't enough to stop him from doing what he wanted to do.

SNAP!

Multiple stalks of flaming grass got broken at once in his hands...

...

"Foolishness... let's go back." The village chief sighed. He didn't know why Althar would do this. He was a bright child but everything changed once his family succumbed to darkness.

He always blamed himself for the cause since the night they fell victim, Althar had went out to look for flaming grass alone, taking their primary torch with himself.

His family had to make do with an old torch and some other flammable material and this caused the tragedy.
