Chapter 91 - Avalanche Erupts, Ditto's Secret Exposed

"Reporting to Instructor Viper! Lance has appeared on Death Island. He just shot down an armed helicopter with his Dragonite!" the adjutant reported, voice trembling.

"I expected as much," Viper said, pulling out his communicator. He dialed a direct line to the Boss. "Leader Giovanni, Elite Four Lance has been spotted. He's active and aggressive. Requesting immediate support."

"Very well," Giovanni's voice came through, cold and authoritative. "Pin him down on the island. I'm sending Sabrina to track his location. If he escapes, order all Rocket forces to withdraw from the archipelago immediately. We will announce the Elite Selection results later."

"Understood, Leader." Viper turned to his staff. "Sabrina is coming. Be on your absolute best behavior. Do not make her angry. When she loses control, not even the Boss can stop her."

Moments later, a girl in pajamas holding a ragdoll materialized in the control room. She floated bare-footed in the air, her amber eyes devoid of emotion.

"I'm so sleepy," a voice chirped—it came from the doll in her arms. "Explain. Why was I called?"

Sabrina's psychic aura began to fluctuate, a storm of kinetic energy rattling the office furniture. Viper gulped. "Lady Sabrina... we found Lance. We need your power to pinpoint his coordinates."

"An Elite Four member? I haven't turned a 'King' into a doll yet. That might be fun," the doll giggled. With a flash of light, Sabrina vanished.

On the island, every Psychic-type Pokémon acting as a merchant suddenly felt a crushing weight. They all teleported to Sabrina's side instantly. Alakazam, Slowking, Xatu, Hypno, Mr. Mime, and Slowbro formed a circle around her.

"Find him," Sabrina commanded. She funneled her titanic psychic reserves into the six Pokémon, who then teleported to the six corners of the archipelago. Their combined senses formed a global "Psychic Radar."

Lance felt his right eye twitch. A cold shiver ran down his spine. "We're being watched. Dragonite, we have to move now!"

Dragonite flapped its wings, but it was still struggling with its newfound speed. It accidentally clipped a massive tree, sending it crashing down.

"The elixir is too powerful," Lance muttered, gritting his teeth as he climbed onto the dragon's back. "Fly!"

The Dragonite took off. The G-force was so intense Lance's ears popped painfully—it was like going from the ground floor to the 300th floor in a second.

Sabrina sensed him immediately. She transmitted the coordinates to the Rocket helicopters and then vanished. She had done her job; she wasn't interested in the cleanup.

Twelve armed helicopters swarmed Lance's position, their searchlights locking onto the orange dragon. They launched patrol missiles, but the Dragonite, boosted by the Salac Elixir, danced through the explosions like a ghost.

"Dragonite, Hyper Beam!"

A massive pillar of orange light tore through the night sky. Three helicopters were instantly vaporized, their tail rotors shredded. One flaming wreck spiraled out of control and slammed directly into the side of the Snowy Peak.

Inside the Ice Cave.

Feng Che felt the mountain shudder. He quickly recalled Linoone and Rookidee. Running to the cave entrance, he saw a wall of white death descending from above.

"Crap! An avalanche!"

"Ditto, use Ice Fang on the entrance!"

Ditto sealed the cave with a thick layer of ice to protect the Ice Lotuses. "Ditto, transform into Golbat! We have to outrun the flow!"

They soared out just as the white torrent hit. The sound was deafening, a roar that shook the very foundations of the island. Abomasnow and Snover buried themselves deep in the snow using Ingrain, while Frosmoth and Froslass watched the destruction with eerie delight.

"It's too fast!" Feng Che shouted, looking at the churning mass of snow and rock gaining on them. Even with the elixir, Golbat-Ditto was struggling against the shifting air currents.

In that moment of life or death, Ditto's mind flashed back to the Level 48 Yanmega it had devoured.

If I use that form... I can save him.

Ignoring the risk of mental backlash, Ditto's body rippled and expanded. It forcibly shifted into a massive Yanmega.

"What the—?!" Feng Che gasped, almost losing his grip. One second he was holding a bat, the next, a prehistoric dragonfly with three pairs of wings.

Ditto-Yanmega looked back at him with a terrifying, compound-eyed grin.

[Ditto: I hope Master isn't too scared! I need to go FAST!]

The Yanmega's wings blurred. Feng Che's head snapped back as they broke the sound barrier. The white wall of the avalanche receded rapidly.

How can Ditto transform into a Yanmega? Feng Che's mind raced. The only way is if it ate the body back at the Pidgeot tree... that little glutton lied to me!

He checked Ditto's mind—it was calm, protected by the mental potions he had been feeding it. Thank goodness for the supplements, or the Yanmega's residual will would have taken over by now.

Just as they reached the foot of the mountain, the strain of maintaining the high-level form became too much for Ditto.

[Ditto: So... tired... can't hold it...]

With a poof, the Yanmega vanished, and the pink blob and Feng Che went tumbling directly into the tail end of the rushing snow.

"Ditto, you little—!"

The cold swallowed Feng Che whole as he lost consciousness.
