Chapter 154 - The Two Worlds

Morning sunlight spilled across the canals of Venice.

Luc had just finished the breakfast service at L'Azur, the restaurant he had built with years of patience and stubborn devotion to honest food.

The kitchen was finally quiet.

Only the soft clatter of dishes being washed echoed from the back.

He untied his apron and reached for the glass of water waiting on the counter.

One of his sous chefs approached cautiously.

"Chef."

"Hm?"

"You should probably look at your phone."

Luc frowned.

"I've been cooking."

"I know."

"It's… about Miss Alina."

His hand paused around the glass.

"What happened?"

The young chef held out his phone.

Every notification belonged to a different newspaper.

THE WOMAN BEHIND WHITE CLOVER CAPITAL

ALINA REVEALED AS MAJOR SHAREHOLDER OF VOSS CORPORATION

THE EX-WIFE WHO SHOCKED WALL STREET

Luc slowly took the phone.

His blue eyes moved from one headline to another.

Then another.

And another.

For several long seconds, he simply read.

Finally, he smiled.

A quiet smile.

"So."

The sous chef blinked.

"So?"

"So that's why."

"…Why what?"

Luc returned the phone.

"Why she was always working."

Over the next hour, he read everything he could find.

Financial articles.

Business interviews.

Opinion pieces.

Television clips uploaded by newspapers.

He learned what the world had learned.

White Clover Capital.

Founded four years ago.

Quietly built into one of New York's most influential investment firms.

A major shareholder of Voss Corporation.

Luc leaned back in his chair.

Pieces began fitting together.

The late-night video calls.

The endless financial reports beside her laptop.

The meetings she occasionally excused herself for.

The strange habit of checking market openings despite living in France.

He had never asked.

She had never volunteered.

Their relationship had always respected silence.

If the other wished to speak, they would.

If not…

They waited.

He smiled again.

"You impossible woman."

His phone vibrated.

Thomas

Before Luc could answer, another notification appeared.

Claire created a group call.

Then another.

Isabelle joined.

He sighed.

"They've already started."

He answered.

The screen immediately filled with familiar faces.

Thomas looked as though he had consumed three espressos.

Claire practically shouted.

"DID YOU KNOW?"

Luc calmly sipped his coffee.

"I do now."

Isabelle leaned closer to her camera.

"I thought she was running restaurants."

"So did I."

Thomas laughed.

"Apparently she was running Wall Street too."

Claire placed a dramatic hand over her chest.

"I cannot believe she never told us."

Luc quietly corrected her.

"She told us she was busy."

"We simply underestimated how busy."

Everyone laughed.

Another face appeared.

Elodie.

She looked simultaneously amused and exasperated.

"I've received twelve calls this morning."

"Twelve?"

"Journalists."

Claire gasped.

"They found you?"

"They found everyone."

Thomas groaned.

"My café had reporters outside."

Luc raised an eyebrow.

"They came to Eze?"

"They're everywhere."

Thomas shook his head.

"They wanted to know whether Alina always planned revenge."

Silence settled briefly.

Eventually Isabelle spoke.

"I said I wasn't discussing my friend."

"You actually said that?"

"I said something less polite."

Thomas laughed loudly.

"I like you."

Claire rested her chin in her hand.

"Did any of you know?"

No one answered immediately.

Luc thought carefully.

"I knew she was building something."

Thomas nodded slowly.

"So did I."

"But…"

"But not this."

Claire sighed.

"I feel tricked."

Luc shook his head.

"No."

"We were trusted."

She frowned.

"That's different."

"It is."

He looked thoughtfully at the screen.

"Imagine how many people wanted information."

"Imagine how dangerous it would have been if any of us knew."

The group gradually became quiet.

He wasn't wrong.

The fewer people who knew…

The safer White Clover had been.

Meanwhile, nearly a thousand kilometers away, another group chat had become equally chaotic.

Former classmates from New York University.

Their alumni group, dormant for a few days, suddenly exploded with messages.

Is this OUR Alina?

No way.

IT IS.

She founded White Clover??

I knew she was brilliant.

I DIDN'T KNOW SHE WAS DOING THIS.

Within minutes, half a dozen graduates agreed to meet at a café near campus.

The café buzzed with conversation.

Business newspapers lay scattered across the tables.

One graduate placed today's paper in the center.

There she is."

The front page showed Alina leaving the shareholders' meeting.

Margot stared at the photograph.

"I knew her for almost four years."

Julien smiled faintly.

"She hasn't changed."

Camille disagreed.

"No."

"She has."

They all looked at her.

"Before…"

Camille searched for the right words.

"…she looked like someone trying very hard not to break."

"And now?"

"Now she looks dangerous."

No one argued.

Julien folded the newspaper.

"Do you remember corporate finance?"

Everyone groaned simultaneously.

"Our professor made us build imaginary investment portfolios."

Margot laughed.

"Alina's portfolio beat everyone."

"It wasn't even close."

Camille nodded.

"She kept buying companies nobody cared about in that simulation class."

Julien looked at the newspaper again.

"I wonder if she was already thinking about White Clover."

Silence.

Finally Margot whispered,

"I think she was."

Another classmate smiled.

"Do you remember when everyone wanted consulting jobs?"

"Yes."

"She didn't."

"What did she say?"

Julien remembered immediately.

"'I don't want to build someone else's empire forever.'"

The table fell quiet.

At the time…

They had thought she was simply ambitious.

Now…

The sentence sounded prophetic.

Back in Venice and Eze, the group call continued.

Thomas suddenly smiled.

"You know what annoys me?"

Claire looked suspicious.

"What?"

"I always thought I was the mysterious one."

Everyone laughed.

"You?"

"Yes."

"I own a café."

"I disappear for weeks."

"I have secrets."

Claire nearly fell out of her chair laughing.

"You sell coffee."

Luc smiled.

"I think White Clover wins."

Thomas sighed dramatically.

"I've been defeated."

The laughter faded naturally.

Then Isabelle asked the question everyone had quietly avoided.

"How do you think she is?"

No one answered immediately.

Luc looked toward the canal outside the restaurant.

"I think…"

He spoke slowly.

"…she's satisfied."

Thomas nodded.

"So do I."

Claire looked down.

"Do you think revenge makes people happy?"

Silence.

Longer this time.

Luc eventually answered.

"I don't know."

"But I know one thing."

"What?"

"She isn't finished."

Everyone understood.

The reveal wasn't the end.

It was the beginning.

That evening, Luc finally called Alina.

She answered on the third ring.

"Hello."

"You've had an interesting week."

A small laugh escaped her.

"So I've been told."

"I just finished reading today's papers."

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For your peaceful life."

Luc smiled softly.

"I chose to be a chef."

"I've never had a peaceful life."

She laughed again.

It sounded lighter than it had in weeks.

"I'm happy for you."

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead…

She asked quietly,

"Are you?"

The question surprised him.

He understood what she was truly asking.

Are you happy…

For me becoming this person?

He looked around his restaurant.

The open kitchen.

Fresh bread cooling on the counter.

The afternoon light dancing across the canal.

Then he thought of Manhattan.

Glass towers.

Shareholder meetings.

Financial television.

Corporate warfare.

Two completely different worlds.

"I am."

He answered honestly.

"I'm proud of you."

Silence followed.

"I've changed."

Her voice was almost a whisper.

"I know."

"I'm becoming someone I never imagined."

"I know."

"I'm afraid…"

She stopped.

Luc waited.

"…that one day you'll look at me and see someone you don't like."

He closed his eyes briefly.

"I've never admired you because you were gentle."

"You haven't?"

"No."

"I admired you because you refused to stay broken."

Neither of them spoke for several moments.

Then Luc smiled.

"But."

She waited.

"I also know something else."

"What?"

"The higher White Clover rises…"

"…the further away your world moves from mine."

Alina looked out through the window of her office.

Manhattan glittered beneath the evening sky.

Thousands of kilometers away…

Venice was preparing for sunset.

"I was thinking the same thing."

Luc owned one restaurant.

He worried about seasonal ingredients.

Wine deliveries.

Reservations.

Satisfied customers.

She now spent her days discussing shareholder votes.

Corporate acquisitions.

Media strategy.

Hostile takeovers.

Investment funds.

Their conversations had once revolved around recipes, travel and books.

Now…

One of them lived inside a world measured in flavors.

The other…

Inside a world measured in influence.

Neither world was wrong.

They were simply drifting apart.

Not because they cared less.

Because life was pulling them toward different horizons.

Luc rested his forehead lightly against the window.

"Promise me something."

"What?"

"When this war is over…"

He smiled.

"…come back to Eze."

She closed her eyes.

"I'd like that."

Neither of them noticed that they had not both said when.

Not if.

Because neither doubted the road ahead.

The woman who had quietly built White Clover for four years had finally stepped into the light.

And the man who had fallen in love with her from across restaurant tables and train rides was beginning to understand something neither of them had expected.

Distance was not always measured in kilometers.

Sometimes…

It was measured in the lives people chose to build.
