Chapter 53 - The Man Who Was Watching

The final school bell rang. The sound burst through the corridors like a wave of freedom.

Children rushed out of classrooms, laughter echoing through the building as backpacks were thrown over shoulders and shoes pounded down the stairs.

Jun Wei jumped up from his chair immediately. "Finally!"

Chen Yu grinned beside him. "You're always this excited?"

Jun Wei nodded seriously. "After a mission day, you need snacks."

Chen Yu blinked. "Mission day?"

Jun Wei leaned closer and whispered dramatically, "I still can't talk about it."

Chen Yu looked impressed.

The front gate of the school quickly filled with students and parents. Teacher Liu stood near the entrance, watching the crowd calmly.

Beside him, Lian Ziho leaned against the fence with his arms folded.

His eyes scanned everything.

Every face...Every movement...Every stranger.

Jun Wei ran toward him as soon as he spotted him. "Lian Gege!"

Lian ziho straightened slightly. "You're alive."

Jun Wei blinked. "…Was that in doubt?"

Lian ziho crouched slightly. "What happened today?"

Jun Wei thought for a moment. "Oh right!"

Then he said proudly. "A villain talked to me."

Teacher Liu choked slightly. "…What?"

Lian ziho's expression sharpened instantly. "What did he say?"

Jun Wei pointed toward the building behind them. "He said to tell Gege something."

"Which Gege?" Lian ziho asked.

Jun Wei answered immediately. "Suo Ran Gege."

Lian ziho went still. "And the message?"

Jun Wei frowned, trying to remember the exact words. Then he repeated carefully.

"He said…"

"Tell your brother the library door is already open."

For a second... Lian Ziho's entire expression changed. Teacher Liu noticed immediately.

"Is that… important?"

Lian ziho didn't answer.

Because across the street...

A familiar car door opened.

Suo Ran stepped out.

Suo Ran crossed the street quickly.

The moment he saw Jun Wei standing safely beside Lian, his shoulders relaxed slightly.

But the tension in his eyes didn't disappear.

He knelt immediately. "Did anything happen?"

Jun Wei shook his head. "No."

"Did anyone talk to you?"

Jun Wei nodded. "Just the villain."

Suo Ran froze. "…What villain?"

Jun Wei pointed casually toward the road.

"The man from the amusement park."

Suo Ran's heart dropped.

He stood instantly and looked around.

The street. The parked cars. The sidewalk.

But the man wasn't there anymore.

Cai Lang stepped out of the car behind him.

"Problem?"

Suo Ran looked around again."He was here."

Lian ziho spoke quietly. "Jun Wei saw him during recess."

Suo Ran's voice sharpened. "And you didn't call me?"

Lian ziho answered calmly. "Nothing happened."

Jun Wei raised his hand. "I delivered the message."

Suo Ran turned to him again. "What message?"

Jun Wei repeated it. "The library door is already open."

This time..

Cai Lang reacted. Very subtly. But Lian noticed.

Suo Ran immediately looked across the street again. "Where is he?"

Lian ziho scanned the area. "He was watching from over there." But the spot was empty now.

Teacher Liu frowned. "That's strange."

Cai Lang slipped his hands into his coat pockets. "Looks like he left."

Suo Ran didn't like that answer. "They wouldn't just leave."

Lian ziho glanced at Cai Lang again. Something felt off. Too clean and Too quiet.

But he didn't say anything yet.

The man who had been watching the school was gone. No car. No shadow near the street.

Just ordinary afternoon traffic.

Teacher Liu frowned slightly."That's strange."

Suo Ran scanned the area again. "They were here."

Lian Ziho nodded. "Yes."

Cai Lang slipped his hands into his coat pockets calmly. "Looks like they left."

But Lian ziho noticed something.

Cai Lang wasn't surprised.Not even a little.

Two streets away. Behind a quiet row of closed shops. A dark van sat parked in an empty alley.

Inside the van..The man who had been watching the school struggled violently against thick plastic ties around his wrists.

His breathing was uneven.

"Let me go!"

Two men sat across from him.Silent and Unmoving.

One of them spoke into a small phone. "He's awake." A calm voice answered on the other end. "Good."

The man froze. He recognized the voice.

"…Cai Lang."

Inside the van, the two men exchanged glances but said nothing. The man laughed weakly. "You people move fast." The phone speaker remained quiet for a moment.

Then Cai Lang's voice spoke again.

"Who sent you?"

The man leaned back against the van wall.

"You already know."

"Names."

Silence.

The man smiled coldly. "You think they'd trust me with names?"

Cai Lang's voice remained calm. "You've been watching the boy for three days."

The man shrugged. "Maybe I like children."

One of the guards punched him in the stomach.

The man groaned.

"Careful," Cai Lang said calmly through the phone.

The man lifted his head slowly. "You're wasting time."

"Am I?"

The man smiled faintly. "Yes."

Then he whispered quietly. "Because you're already too late."

The guards stiffened slightly.

Cai Lang's voice sharpened just a little. "For what?"

The man chuckled. "You should ask Suo Ran."

Silence filled the van. Then Cai Lang asked one final question. "Who opened the library door?"

For the first time...The man's smile faded.

Just slightly. But the guards noticed.

And Cai Lang noticed.

Then suddenly...

The man's body jerked violently.

Foam appeared at the corner of his mouth.

The guards grabbed him. "Hey!"

Too late. His body went limp.

One guard checked his pulse. "…Dead."

A small broken capsule rolled from between the man's teeth. Poison.

The guard spoke into the phone again.

"Sir… he killed himself."

Several seconds passed.

Then Cai Lang's calm voice returned. "…I expected that." The line went quiet.

Across the street from the school gate, Cai Lang slipped his phone back into his pocket.

Suo Ran was still scanning the road. "They vanished." Cai Lang nodded.

"Yes." Lian Ziho looked at him carefully.

Something about the situation felt… controlled.

Too controlled.

But Suo Ran didn't notice.

Because his mind was still stuck on one thing. Jun Wei's message.

"The library door is already open."

Suo Ran whispered quietly to himself.

"…Father."

Meanwhile...

Lian ziho looked at Cai Lang again. And suddenly understood something important.

The man watching them didn't disappear by accident. Someone had removed him.

And Cai Lang already knew the result.

The afternoon sun had started to lower when they finally left the school gate. Students scattered in every direction, some running toward waiting parents, others racing down the sidewalk with loud laughter.

Jun Wei skipped ahead happily. "School wasn't even that bad today."

Suo Ran walked beside him, still tense."You said someone talked to you."

Jun Wei nodded. "Yes."

"You told Lian Gege already?" "Yes."

Suo Ran crouched slightly so they were eye level. "Tell me exactly what he said."

Jun Wei repeated carefully, trying not to forget a single word. "He said to tell you… the library door is already open."

Suo Ran froze again.

That sentence had been circling in his mind all afternoon. Cai Lang watched him from a few steps behind. Teacher Liu walked beside Jun Wei.

"Does it mean something?" the teacher asked quietly.

Suo Ran didn't answer immediately.

Finally he said, "…Maybe."

But his expression said something else.

Something heavier.

They began walking down the street together.

Jun Wei held Suo Ran's hand while swinging his backpack. "So… are we going home now?"

Suo Ran forced a calm tone. "Yes."

Jun Wei tilted his head. "Which home?"

Teacher Liu chuckled softly. "That's a fair question."

Cai Lang answered calmly."The temporary one."

Jun Wei sighed dramatically. "You adults change houses too much."

Lian Ziho almost smiled. "You'll survive."

Jun Wei thought about it seriously. "Only if there's snacks."

While they walked, Lian ziho slowed slightly.

Letting the others move ahead.

Cai Lang slowed too. For a few seconds they walked in silence behind the group.

Then Lian ziho spoke quietly. "That man."

Cai Lang didn't look at him. "Yes."

"He didn't leave on his own."

Cai Lang's expression didn't change.

"Didn't he?"

Lian ziho stopped walking. "You handled it."

Cai Lang finally glanced at him. "Handled what?"

Lian y lowered his voice. "The watcher."

A long pause.....Then Cai Lang said calmly,

"I prefer removing distractions."

Lian ziho studied him carefully. "So you took him."

Cai Lang didn't confirm it directly. But he didn't deny it either. "That problem won't appear again."

Lian ziho understood the meaning immediately. But one thing still bothered him.

"What did he say?"

Cai Lang's gaze shifted briefly toward Suo Ran walking ahead. "Nothing useful."

Lian ziho frowned. "You're lying."

Cai Lang smiled faintly. "I'm simplifying."

Jun Wei suddenly stopped walking. "Gege."

Suo Ran looked down. "Yes?"

Jun Wei pointed at a building across the street. "That's a library."

Suo Ran followed his gaze. An old city library stood on the corner. Quiet and Almost empty.

His chest tightened slightly.

Because for a second...

He wondered if it was connected.

But then he shook the thought away.

No....It couldn't be that simple.

Jun Wei noticed his expression. "Did the villain mean that library?"

Suo Ran forced a small smile. "No."

Jun Wei looked disappointed. "That would've been cool."

Teacher Liu chuckled. "Most mysteries are less exciting in real life."

Jun Wei shook his head confidently. "Not ours."

Behind them, Lian ziho spoke again quietly.

"You interrogated him."

Cai Lang's voice stayed calm. "Yes."

"And?"

"He didn't talk."

Lian ziho's eyes narrowed.

"What happened?"

Cai Lang answered simply. "He killed himself."

Lian ziho went still. "Poison?"

"Yes."

That confirmed something important. These weren't random criminals. They were organized and Prepared.

Lian ziho exhaled slowly. "So the people behind this are serious."

Cai Lang nodded. "Very."

Then he added something unexpected."He did confirm one thing."

Lian ziho glanced at him. "What?"

Cai Lang looked toward Suo Ran again.

"The message about the library wasn't random."

Lian ziho felt a cold realization spread through him. "They want Suo Ran to go somewhere."

"Yes."

"And the boy was the messenger."

"Yes."

Lian ziho muttered quietly, "That's twisted."

Cai Lang shrugged slightly. "It's effective."

Up ahead, Suo Ran had gone quiet again.

Jun Wei noticed immediately. "Gege?"

"Yes?"

"You look like you're solving a math problem."

Suo Ran almost laughed. "Something like that."

Jun Wei leaned closer. "Is it about the library door?"

Suo Ran hesitated.

Then he asked softly, "Did the man say anything else?"

Jun Wei thought carefully. "…No."

Then after a moment he added,

"He looked like he knew you."

That made Suo Ran stop walking.

"What do you mean?"

Jun Wei shrugged. "He smiled when he said your name."

Teacher Liu looked concerned. "That's not good."

No. It wasn't.

By the time they returned to the hotel, the sky had already started turning dark. Jun Wei yawned loudly. "I'm tired."

Teacher Liu smiled. "That happens after school."

Jun Wei pointed at Lian ziho.

"He didn't even go to school and he looks tired too."

Lian ziho crossed his arms. "Watching you is exhausting."

Jun Wei looked proud. "Thank you."

Later that night, the hotel room became quiet. Jun Wei had fallen asleep quickly.

His backpack lay on the floor beside the bed.

Suo Ran sat by the window staring at the black card in his hand. The same strange card that unlocked the scroll.

Cai Lang leaned against the wall across the room. "You're thinking about the library."

Suo Ran didn't deny it. "Yes."

"Do you know where it is?"

Suo Ran nodded slowly. "…I might."

Cai Lang studied him. "And?"

Suo Ran looked out at the dark city.

"My father used to work near one."

Cai Lang didn't speak. Because that was exactly what their enemy wanted.

Suo Ran to remember. To return.

To open something that had been waiting for years.

And somewhere else in the city...

Inside an old abandoned library building..

A single desk lamp turned on by itself.

Illuminating a dusty computer screen.

On the screen appeared one sentence.

"He remembered." And beneath it...

"Prepare the next step."

Suo Ran's eyes were sharp, scanning the horizon from the quiet street outside. His jaw was tight, every memory of his father's work surfacing like a puzzle he hadn't been ready to complete.

"My father used to work near one," he muttered, his voice almost lost in the night wind.

Cai Lang stepped close, silent, his gaze following Suo Ran's every movement. He didn't speak; he let Suo Ran's thoughts flow for a few moments. There was a tension between them, heavy with unsaid words.

"They want it," Cai Lang said finally, voice low and measured. "They want you to return. To open something that's been waiting for years."

Suo Ran's hand clenched on the railing of a nearby staircase. "I can't ignore it. Not now. There's too much… too much has been left unfinished."

Cai Lang's gaze softened fractionally. "Then we go carefully. Not recklessly. And never alone."

Suo Ran didn't respond. His eyes darted to the shadows moving further down the street, subtle shapes too deliberate to be accidental. His instincts screamed danger but he couldn't let fear paralyze him. Not while Lian Ziho and Jun Wei were somewhere nearby, unaware.

Meanwhile, back in the hotel room, Jun Wei slept soundly. His small chest rose and fell steadily, the balloon from the amusement park resting beside him. Lian Ziho sat silently in the dim light, watching him.

"He's safe," Lian ziho whispered softly to himself. But he didn't relax. Not really.

Every instinct screamed that danger was still near. Every shadow outside made him tense, every distant sound pulled his attention to the streets.

Outside, Suo Ran and Cai Lang moved carefully. The city felt larger, more dangerous at night, each alley a potential trap.

"I want to check near the carousel," Suo Ran said, voice low but sharp. "Someone's been there before, I can feel it."

"You don't go alone," Cai Lang warned, stepping slightly in front of him. "If you rush, you'll only make things worse."

"I'm not rushing!" Suo Ran snapped. "I'm going to make sure nothing happens to him!"

"You're letting your emotions dictate your actions," Cai Lang countered. "Think strategically. We're not just protecting one person we're protecting all of them."

Suo Ran clenched his fists, but he didn't argue further. He exhaled slowly. "Fine. Together."

The streets were emptying, the city breathing a quiet, uneasy sigh. Lian Ziho watched from the hotel window, phone in hand. Jun Wei was still asleep, but a shadow was moving through the park. Someone had been following them, always just out of sight.

Lian Ziho's thoughts raced. He had to protect Jun Wei, yes but he also had to trust Suo Ran and Cai Lang to handle the immediate threat.

Hours later, Suo Ran and Cai Lang reached the amusement park. The empty night rides creaked softly in the wind, and the bright colors of the day were muted, almost sinister under the pale glow of the security lights.

Cai Lang crouched behind a low railing, peering down a narrow corridor between two closed stalls. Suo Ran joined him, tense, ready.

"That's him," Cai Lang whispered.

Suo Ran's hand brushed the small weapon at his belt. "Now?"

"Not yet," Cai Lang said sharply. "We need to know what he wants, who's behind him. Then we act."

A shadow moved further down the alley, careful, deliberate. It didn't know it was being watched.

Back at the hotel, Jun Wei stirred, still half asleep. Lian Ziho watched him for a moment, brushing a lock of hair from the boy's face. "Sleep a little longer," he whispered. But even here, the tension crept in. He knew that by morning, their temporary calm would shatter.

Suo Ran's breath hitched as he noticed a figure dart behind a lamp post. His pulse spiked.

"That movement," he muttered. "I've seen it before."

Cai Lang placed a firm hand on his shoulder. "Patience. Let's see the whole picture first."

Suo Ran nodded, though his body tensed like a coiled spring. Every instinct screamed that danger was immediate, that the person in the shadows wasn't alone that this was just a warning, the first step.

A sudden noise metal scraping against pavement made both men freeze. The shadow moved again, pausing to check the street. Suo Ran's eyes narrowed, calculating every possible threat.

Cai Lang's phone buzzed lightly. He checked it briefly. Nothing overt just a signal confirming the team's location but the timing made his stomach knot.

"This is too precise," Cai Lang murmured. "Someone's orchestrating this. They know exactly where we are."

Suo Ran's hands tightened into fists. "Then we make sure they don't get what they want."

Meanwhile, in the abandoned library building, the desk lamp flickered again. On the dusty computer screen, the glowing words were sharper than before:

"He remembers more than expected."

"Proceed to step two."

No one in the hotel, no one in the streets, understood what "step two" would mean. Not Suo Ran. Not Lian Ziho. Not Jun Wei, still curled up asleep, blissfully unaware.

And somewhere, just at the edge of the city, a shadow shifted in silence, waiting, watching…
