Chapter 81 - chapter 19

BOOK THREE: The Fall of the First Kingdom

Chapter 19: The Summit of Broken Promises

The Crystal Tower shook violently.

Cracks raced across its crystal walls like lightning.

Outside, the City of Dawn flickered between existence and emptiness. Streets vanished for a heartbeat before returning. Buildings became transparent, then solid again.

The entire Hidden Valley was becoming unstable.

---

At the top of the tower, the mysterious figure watched calmly.

In his hand, the second black crystal pulsed with dark light.

"So this is the generation that inherited the Covenant," he said.

"I expected... more."

Lucien immediately drew the Blade of Dawn.

"We're coming up."

The figure smiled.

"I know."

---

The Six Heirs rushed up the spiral staircase.

Each step became harder than the last.

The tower itself seemed to resist them.

Golden symbols appeared beneath their feet.

Each symbol reflected one of their greatest fears.

Riva saw herself standing alone.

Lucien saw his sword broken in two.

Eva saw blank pages where history should have been.

Parna saw the White Tree withered to ash.

Aarvi heard laughter replaced by silence.

Orion saw everyone behind his shield disappear.

But none of them stopped.

They kept climbing.

Together.

---

Caelan followed close behind.

The silver feather floated beside him.

Its glow grew brighter with every step.

The First Guardian watched him carefully.

"Your memories are returning."

Caelan nodded.

"I remember climbing these stairs before."

"But..."

"I wasn't alone."

---

Finally...

The group reached the summit.

The highest chamber was unlike the rest of the tower.

Its ceiling was open to the stars.

Seven crystal pillars surrounded a circular platform.

At its center floated a brilliant sphere of silver light.

Inside the sphere...

A tiny flame burned steadily.

Seren fell to one knee.

"The Heart of the First Promise..."

The First Guardian lowered his head in respect.

"It still lives."

---

The mysterious man stepped forward from the shadows.

He removed the hood covering his face.

He appeared young, perhaps no older than thirty.

His long silver hair moved gently in the wind.

One of his eyes was bright gold.

The other was completely black.

A thin crack of darkness ran across his cheek.

He looked at the First Guardian.

"You've grown old."

The Guardian answered quietly.

"And you've remained exactly the same."

---

Riva frowned.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled.

"I've had many names."

"But once..."

"They called me Noctis."

The old gardener gasped.

"No..."

"You disappeared before the Kingdom fell."

Noctis laughed softly.

"Everyone believed that."

---

Eva opened her notebook.

"There are no records about you."

"There shouldn't be."

"I erased them."

He lifted the second black crystal.

"Some histories deserve to be forgotten."

---

Lucien pointed his sword.

"Then why are you here?"

Noctis looked at the glowing flame.

"I'm here to finish what began thousands of years ago."

"The First Promise was incomplete."

"I'm going to correct that mistake."

---

The Heart of the First Promise pulsed.

The silver flame suddenly expanded.

Images surrounded the chamber.

The Six Heirs watched as the First Guardian, Caelus, Seren, and Noctis stood together beneath the White Tree long ago.

They were smiling.

Laughing.

Friends.

Aarvi whispered,

"They knew each other..."

Seren closed his eyes.

"We were brothers in everything except blood."

---

The vision changed.

The four stood in the Chamber of Farewell.

Voices were raised.

Arguments filled the room.

Noctis slammed his fist against the table.

"We cannot hide forever!"

The First Guardian replied,

"We are protecting the future."

Noctis shook his head.

"No."

"We're abandoning it."

Caelus stepped between them.

"There has to be another way."

The memory shattered before anyone could hear the answer.

---

Silence returned.

Riva looked at Noctis.

"You didn't betray the Kingdom..."

"You disagreed with it."

Noctis smiled.

"Exactly."

"For thousands of years, history has needed a villain."

"I simply became convenient."

---

Before anyone could respond, the two black crystals floated into the air.

They circled the silver flame.

A deep voice echoed from the Heart itself.

"Two fragments remain divided."

"Choose."

The chamber fell silent.

The First Guardian looked at Noctis.

"No..."

"Not again."

Noctis slowly extended his hand toward the Heart.

"So many years."

"So many sacrifices."

"It ends today."

The silver flame suddenly split into two equal halves.

One glowed with radiant silver light.

The other shimmered with soft golden light.

The ancient voice spoke once more.

"Only one path can restore the Promise."

No one knew which flame was the true one.

And before anyone could decide...

The tower doors slammed shut.

Locking everyone inside.
