BOOK THREE: The Fall of the First Kingdom
Chapter 18: The Crystal Tower
The City of Dawn awakened.
Crystal streets shimmered beneath the silver sky.
Fountains that had been silent for thousands of years burst back to life.
Golden bells rang across the city.
One by one, lights appeared in every building, as though invisible hands were welcoming the Covenant home.
The Six Heirs stood speechless.
"It feels..."
Riva whispered.
"...alive."
The First Guardian smiled.
"It always was."
---
High above the city, the Crystal Tower pierced the heavens.
Seven beams of light continued pouring into its highest chamber.
The notebook.
The compass.
The sword.
The flower.
The Staff of Home.
The shield.
And the black crystal.
All were connected.
Seren looked toward the tower.
"We have to hurry."
"The tower won't stay open forever."
---
The group rushed through the streets.
As they passed, strange things happened.
Doors opened by themselves.
Ancient lamps lit their path.
Statues of forgotten heroes slowly bowed.
Caelan looked around in amazement.
"They remember us."
The old gardener nodded.
"The city remembers every promise ever made here."
---
Suddenly...
A little girl's laughter echoed nearby.
Everyone stopped.
At the edge of the street stood a young girl wearing a white dress.
She smiled at Caelan.
"You finally came back."
Before anyone could speak...
She disappeared like mist.
Caelan frowned.
"I know her."
"But..."
"I can't remember her name."
---
Eva checked her compass.
"There isn't anyone here."
"It was another memory."
The First Guardian quietly replied,
"No."
"Not a memory."
"A guardian spirit."
---
The streets ahead suddenly split into three different paths.
Each led toward the Crystal Tower.
Lucien sighed.
"Another trial?"
Before anyone moved...
Ancient letters appeared above the roads.
PATH OF STRENGTH
PATH OF WISDOM
PATH OF COMPASSION
Aarvi looked at the Guardian.
"Which one is correct?"
He smiled.
"I've never been allowed to answer that."
---
The Six Heirs studied the three roads.
The Path of Strength was wide and clear.
The Path of Wisdom was filled with ancient puzzles carved into the ground.
The Path of Compassion looked broken, with collapsed bridges and ruined buildings.
Riva remained silent.
Then she noticed something.
An old man had fallen near the Path of Compassion.
He was trying to lift a broken cart.
No one else seemed to notice him.
Lucien looked toward the tower.
"If we stop..."
"We'll lose time."
Riva smiled.
"Maybe."
She walked toward the old man anyway.
Without hesitation...
The others followed.
Together they lifted the cart.
The old man smiled warmly.
"Thank you."
The moment he spoke...
The ruined road transformed.
The broken bridges repaired themselves.
Flowers bloomed along the path.
The ancient words above the road changed.
THE TRUE PATH
Aarvi laughed.
"I knew it!"
The First Guardian smiled proudly.
"The First Kingdom believed..."
"The fastest road isn't always the right one."
---
The group continued toward the Crystal Tower.
As they reached its gates...
They found them already open.
No guards.
No locks.
Only silence.
Inside, a spiral staircase wound endlessly upward.
Crystal windows overlooked the entire city.
Halfway up...
They discovered murals covering the walls.
One showed the First Guardian standing beside Caelus.
Another showed the six original Founders beneath the White Tree.
But the final mural was unfinished.
Its center remained blank.
Eva frowned.
"Why wasn't it completed?"
The old gardener touched the empty stone.
"Because history hadn't ended."
---
As they climbed higher...
The black crystal in Seren's hand pulsed faster.
He suddenly stopped.
"It's here."
Everyone turned.
A hidden doorway appeared in the tower wall.
Behind it...
A small circular room waited.
In its center floated a single silver feather.
Caelan gasped.
"I remember this..."
The First Guardian's eyes widened.
"The Feather of Oaths..."
He looked at Seren.
"It survived."
Seren nodded.
"It has been waiting for its Keeper."
The feather slowly drifted toward Caelan.
Just as it was about to touch his hand—
A violent explosion shook the tower.
The crystal walls cracked.
The seven beams of light flickered wildly.
A chilling laugh echoed from above.
"So..."
"You really made it."
The Six Heirs looked upward.
At the very top of the tower...
A lone figure stood silhouetted against the silver sky.
His face remained hidden by light.
But in his hand...
He held a second black crystal.
The First Guardian's expression darkened.
"Impossible..."
"There should only be one."
The mysterious figure smiled.
"There was."
"Until someone broke the Promise."
The two black crystals began resonating with one another.
The Crystal Tower trembled violently.
Far below...
The City of Dawn began disappearing once again.
And high above...
The final climb to the summit had begun.
