BOOK THREE: THE FALL OF THE FIRST KINGDOM
Chapter 7: The Chamber of the First Promise
The glowing map hovered above Eva's compass.
Its silver light reflected across the crystal floor of the Hall of the First King.
Ancient letters pulsed slowly.
THE CHAMBER OF THE FIRST PROMISE
No one spoke.
The mysterious figure stared at the map with an expression that was almost... relieved.
"So it still exists," the figure whispered.
The Chancellor closed his eyes.
"I feared that place had been erased forever."
---
Riva looked from the map to the Chancellor.
"What is the Chamber of the First Promise?"
The old man hesitated.
"I have guarded this Hall for thousands of years..."
"...but I was never permitted to enter that chamber."
Aarvi blinked.
"So nobody knows what's inside?"
The Chancellor shook his head.
"Only the First King..."
"...and the six founders of the Covenant."
---
Lucien looked toward the enormous throne.
"Then that's where we'll find the truth."
The mysterious figure raised a hand.
"Perhaps."
"But every truth demands a price."
---
Without warning...
The Hall trembled.
A deep metallic sound echoed beneath the floor.
BOOM...
BOOM...
BOOM...
The glowing map suddenly expanded.
Instead of showing only one location...
It revealed an enormous underground city beneath Aurelia Prime.
Ancient roads.
Hidden libraries.
Crystal rivers.
Forgotten temples.
All leading toward a single massive circular chamber.
At its center...
Six glowing handprints surrounded a seventh symbol.
A circle.
Not a crown.
Not a throne.
A promise.
---
Eva carefully studied the symbols.
"They're responding to us."
As she reached toward the map, the six handprints lit up one after another.
Notebook.
Sword.
Compass.
Flower.
Wooden Box.
Shield.
The map completed itself.
A hidden pathway appeared beneath the palace.
The route had never existed before.
"It opened because of us," Orion said quietly.
---
Elias smiled.
"The Chamber recognizes its heirs."
---
The great doors of the Hall slowly opened.
Beyond them stretched a spiral staircase descending into darkness.
No torches.
No light.
Only silver symbols floating in the air.
The mysterious figure looked toward the Six Heirs.
"From this point onward..."
"...history will no longer guide you."
"You must guide history."
---
The group began descending.
Every step echoed through the endless staircase.
The deeper they traveled...
The older everything became.
The polished marble gave way to rough stone.
Ancient murals covered the walls.
Parna stopped before one of them.
It showed six people standing beside a seventh figure beneath a giant silver tree.
None of them wore crowns.
Instead...
They held each other's hands.
Parna smiled.
"The Covenant really began as equals."
The Chancellor nodded.
"The First King believed no one should rule alone."
---
Further down...
Another mural appeared.
This one was damaged.
Someone had deliberately scratched away one person's face.
Eva frowned.
"It wasn't time that destroyed this."
"It was done on purpose."
The mysterious figure touched the damaged stone.
"Someone wanted history to forget."
---
Suddenly...
A cold laugh echoed through the staircase.
Not loud.
Not threatening.
Simply... amused.
The Six Heirs instantly stopped.
Lucien drew the Blade of Dawn.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Only silence.
Then...
Every torchless wall began reflecting shadows that did not belong to them.
Each Heir saw a different figure standing behind them.
When they turned...
Nothing was there.
---
Aarvi tightened her grip on the Staff of Home.
"I officially don't like this place."
Even Orion looked uneasy.
"This isn't an attack."
"It's a warning."
---
They continued until the staircase ended.
Before them stood an enormous circular stone door.
Exactly as the map had shown.
Six glowing handprints surrounded a single silver circle.
Ancient words were carved across the arch above.
Eva slowly translated them.
"Only those who trust one another more than themselves may enter."
Riva smiled.
"That's easy."
Without hesitation...
The Six Heirs placed their hands upon the glowing symbols.
For several seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then...
A brilliant silver light spread through the chamber.
The six symbols connected.
The seventh circle in the center began to rotate.
Massive gears hidden within the mountain awakened for the first time in thousands of years.
The ancient door slowly opened.
---
A warm breeze flowed out.
Not cold air from an abandoned ruin.
Warm...
Like the first morning of spring.
Inside was not a treasure vault.
Not a prison.
Not a throne room.
It was a peaceful garden.
Silver grass covered the ground.
Crystal streams flowed quietly.
Birds sang among glowing white trees.
At the center stood a simple stone table.
Six chairs surrounded it.
Each chair bore the name of one of the original founders.
The seventh chair remained empty.
Upon the table rested a single crystal orb.
Inside the orb floated tiny stars.
A small inscription beneath it read:
"The First Promise."
Riva stepped closer.
"Is this... all?"
The mysterious figure smiled softly.
"You expected a weapon."
"But the First Kingdom believed peace was its greatest treasure."
---
As Eva reached toward the crystal orb...
It suddenly burst with light.
A gentle voice echoed through the garden.
Not from the orb.
Not from the sky.
From everywhere.
"Welcome, Covenant."
The Six Heirs froze.
The voice continued.
"You have come farther than any before you."
"Now... the First Promise shall choose whether history is ready to remember."
The crystal orb rose into the air.
Six beams of silver light connected to the Six Heirs.
Then...
A seventh beam shot upward into the sky.
Far above Aurelia Prime...
The White Tree, thought to exist only in memory, began glowing once more.
Deep beneath its roots...
An ancient heartbeat echoed.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
The mysterious figure looked toward the ceiling.
For the first time...
A smile of genuine hope appeared.
"The First King..."
"...is finally awakening."
