In this world, every person had one—and only one—potential for bending.
It was an absolute law of nature, restricted strictly to the domains of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. While some masters could refine their craft to manipulate metal, ice, or even lava, they were still fundamentally bending their base element.
There was only one soul in all of history permitted to break this rule: The Avatar.
The Avatar was a bridge between worlds, a bender inhabited by a primordial spirit who reincarnated through the ages. Each generation grew more powerful than the last, uniquely gifted with the ability to master all four elements. For anyone else, bending was a binary switch at birth—either you were born with it, or you weren't. You couldn't "learn" it later, and you certainly couldn't learn a second one. The elements themselves were reflections of the bender's soul: Earth was firm, Fire was fierce, Water was graceful, and Air was harmonious. Their temperaments rarely allowed for overlap.
"Whoa... what is this?"
Li Ke stared in genuine shock at the hovering sphere of water he was currently holding. He could feel a strange, new tether connecting his consciousness to the liquid. By exerting a small amount of physical stamina, the water moved as if it were an extension of his own limb.
Even more curious, he noticed that when he shifted his stance into a fluid, rhythmic motion, his grip on the water became significantly firmer.
Where did this come from? He was certain he hadn't possessed this power a moment ago. He quickly pulled up his mental Skill Panel to investigate. To his utter astonishment, a brand-new entry had manifested in his skill list:
[Skill: Elemental Mastery — Water (Lv. 1)]
Description: You have gained the innate ability to command the element of Water.
System Tip: As a beginner, you are strongly advised to use physical martial arts forms (katas) to help channel and circulate the elemental energy. Without these "focusing" movements, your control will remain crude and inefficient.
Technical Limits: Do not get ahead of yourself. Concepts like bloodbending, flash-evaporation, or sub-atomic fusion are currently far beyond your reach.
World Constraint: This is a localized power granted by the laws of the Avatar world. You have simply "awakened" as a Waterbender by chance. You are subject to the same limitations as any local—you cannot manifest water from thin air; you must find a source.
Final Warning: Do not mistake yourself for the Avatar just because you've cheated the system.
"This is getting more interesting by the second," Li Ke thought.
He climbed down from the water cushion he had unconsciously created, his mind racing. But as he looked up, the marketplace had gone deathly silent. Both the scarred man and the manic woman were frozen in place, their expressions a mix of horror and raw bewilderment.
"That's impossible!" they shouted, their voices overlapping in a jarring duet.
In their eyes, they hadn't just seen a man defend himself. They had seen a Firebender suddenly manipulate Water. In a world where only the Avatar held that right, Li Ke had just declared himself the most important—and most dangerous—person on the planet.
Li Ke was genuinely stunned. Most of the skills he'd picked up from the 7 Days to Die system—aside from his evolved Pyrokinesis—had never been officially recorded. It was as if his arrogant skill panel deemed them too "low-end" to even mention.
Yet, this sudden power-up was recognized instantly.
Interesting...
"So I can actually awaken the native abilities of the worlds I visit," he mused. "It looks like my 'Universal Adaptation' physique is a bigger cheat than I thought."
Gaining a new power was a nice bonus, but it didn't distract him from the threat at hand.
"It's clear you're playing for keeps, lady," Li Ke said, his voice cold. He turned slightly toward the scarred man. "Sorry, pal. I'm going to have to use some extreme measures here."
Li Ke drew his handgun and leveled it at Azula. Without the crosshair UI from the 7 Days to Die world, his marksmanship was only average, so he took a moment to carefully line up his shot.
The deliberate, predatory nature of the movement sent a spike of pure dread through Azula. Sensing a lethal threat unlike anything she had faced before, she bolted, weaving between market stalls and searching for cover.
Li Ke pulled the trigger.
The first shot screamed through the air, grazing her cheek and clipping a few strands of hair. Azula let out a sharp, terrified gasp—for the first time in her life, she was staring at a weapon that moved faster than she could react.
The scarred man, seeing the bullet crater the stone wall behind her, cried out in alarm. "Please, stop! I don't want her dead!"
Li Ke didn't even blink. "Too bad. I do."
He kept firing. As the muzzle flashes flickered, the man swung his arms, unleashing a massive screen of fire. He wasn't attacking Li Ke; he was trying to create a smoke screen to shield Azula from the line of sight.
"Please! Whatever damage she caused, I'll pay for it! Just don't kill her!" He spread his arms wide, stepping directly into Li Ke's path to force a ceasefire.
Li Ke ignored him. He could see Azula behind the man, using the distraction to drop back into that dangerous stance, lightning beginning to dance around her fingertips again.
Deciding "gentle" weapons weren't cutting it, Li Ke swapped the handgun for his heavy machine gun.
A hail of lead was seconds away from shredding the Fire Nation princess. But just as the bullets were about to find their mark, the ground erupted. Great slabs of earth and stone slammed upward, forming a jagged fortress that intercepted the gunfire and instantly encased Azula, pinning her limbs so she couldn't move an inch.
In the sudden silence that followed, a familiar voice rang out.
"Li Ke! You actually got here this fast?!"
Li Ke turned toward the sound. It was Toph. She was climbing out of a nearby tunnel, a casual wave of her hand causing the earth to part before her with effortless grace.
Despite her cool entrance, her face was noticeably flushed.
"Toph? You're the one who saved her?"
Li Ke lowered his machine gun and stowed it away; he had to give Toph that much face.
"Ugh, I had to jump in," Toph explained, waving a dismissive hand. "This guy is my teammate, and that lunatic Azula is his older sister. I have no idea why he dragged his crazy sister out here, but we're teammates on a mission to save the world, so I'm stuck helping. Don't worry, I won't let your trouble go unrewarded. I'll make it up to you later."
As she spoke, she gave Li Ke a casual beckoning gesture.
In an instant, the very earth beneath Li Ke's boots surged. Before he could even process the movement, he was standing right beside Toph. He looked down in surprise; the patch of ground he was standing on hadn't changed, but the terrain around it showed clear tracks of rapid displacement.
So, if you fight Toph, the very ground betrays you? Li Ke realized immediately where her absolute confidence came from. This girl was terrifyingly strong.
"You know him, Toph?" the scarred man asked, his jaw dropping. He couldn't believe this stranger—a man who had just manifested two different bending arts—was an acquaintance of hers.
"Know him?" Toph smirked. "Zuko, meet my new boyfriend."
"Boyfriend?! You? Him?!" Zuko stammered, his eyes darting between them. "Wait—Toph, do you realize he just used two types of bending?"
Zuko's breath hitched, the weight of Li Ke's revelation far eclipsing the sting of Azula's escape. To the Fire Lord, this wasn't just a political crisis; it was a fundamental rupture in the natural order. For ten thousand years, the Avatar stood alone as the bridge between worlds, a singular force defined by a sacred cycle of reincarnation. Their power was a divine anomaly, protected by its own complexity—something that couldn't be dissected, replicated, or harnessed by mortal hands.
If the truth leaked—that a "nobody" could wield multiple elements—the world would ignite in a different kind of war. Nations wouldn't just fight for territory; they would hunt Li Ke like a specimen. Desperate men would turn the world into a laboratory, sacrificing thousands in a grisly pursuit of artificial godhood. The hard-won peace, still so thin and fragile, would dissolve into a global feeding frenzy.
"Huh?" Toph's head tilted, her sightless eyes fixed on Li Ke's general direction. She quickly realized Zuko was mistaking Li Ke's exotic, otherworldly techniques for local bending arts. "Oh, that... yeah, I actually didn't know about that part. Look, regardless of why you let Azula out of her cage, we clearly need to sit down and talk."
Toph planted her hands on her hips, her stance defiant as ever. Feeling the mounting tension, Li Ke reached out and gave her sleeve a subtle, urgent tug, silently pleading with her to keep his status as an "out-worlder" a secret. Toph's lips curled into a sharp, knowing grin. She got the message.
Zuko didn't notice the exchange. He was too busy staring at Li Ke as if he were looking at a ghost—or a ticking time bomb. The silence in the courtyard grew heavy, thick with the realization that the greatest threat to the world might no longer be a Fire Lord, but a secret that defied the laws of nature.
