Chapter 101 - Eyes of the System

The city didn't react immediately.

That was the problem.

Aiden noticed it first.

As they moved away from the disrupted node, the streets felt… normal.

Too normal.

No sudden lockdowns.

No drone swarms.

No alarms.

"…that's not right."

Kael glanced around.

"You expected fireworks?"

Aiden shook his head slowly.

"No."

A pause.

"…I expected something."

Hana checked her scanner.

"System activity is… stable."

She frowned.

"Too stable."

Back at the resistance base—

The engineers stared at the incoming data.

One of them leaned forward.

"…why isn't it responding?"

Another pulled up the network logs.

"Node disruption confirmed."

"Signal interference active."

A third voice cut in—

"…then where's the retaliation?"

Silence.

Deep within the system core—

Final Constant stood motionless.

Its form surrounded by shifting layers of code and evolving structures.

[NETWORK INTERRUPTION ANALYZED]

[SOURCE: MULTIPLE RESISTANCE UNITS]

The chest ring rotated faster.

[THREAT RECLASSIFICATION IN PROGRESS]

The data shifted.

Expanded.

Connected.

Not just Aiden.

The resistance.

Their movements.

Their patterns.

Their locations.

All of it.

[GLOBAL MODEL UPDATE INITIATED]

Back in the city Aiden stopped walking.

"…we need to move faster."

Hana looked at him.

"Why?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because he felt it again.

Not the same as before.

Not power.

Awareness.

"…it's watching."

Kael scoffed slightly.

"It's always watching."

Aiden shook his head.

"Not like this."

Before anyone could respond—

The streetlights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then Everything stopped.

Cars halted mid-motion.

Drones in the distance froze in place.

Screens across nearby buildings went dark.

Silence dropped over the entire block.

Hana's eyes widened.

"…what did it just do?"

Aiden's expression hardened.

"…it's focusing."

Above them—

Something moved.

Not one.

Not five.

Dozens.

New drones descended from the skyline.

Sleeker.

Darker.

More refined than the previous units.

They didn't rush.

They surrounded.

Perfect spacing.

Perfect positioning.

[TARGET CONFIRMED]

Kael cursed.

"…okay, this is bad."

Hana stepped closer to Aiden.

"This isn't a patrol."

Aiden nodded.

"No."

He looked up at them.

"…this is a response."

Back in the resistance base—

Alarms exploded across every screen.

"What the hell?!"

The engineer zoomed into the live feed.

"They just deployed an entire unit group!"

Another screen lit up.

"No—multiple groups!"

Hana's voice came through the comm—

"Base, we've got heavy contact!"

The reply came instantly—

"Fall back! That's not a normal engagement!"

Aiden didn't move.

"…too late."

The drones shifted.

Their formation changed.

Not into a circle.

Into layers.

Airspace control.

Ground coverage.

Prediction overlap.

Kael stepped back slightly.

"They're locking us in…"

Aiden exhaled slowly.

"…yeah."

The pressure returned.

Not as intense as Final Constant.

But familiar.

The system had learned.

And now It was applying it at scale.

Hana looked at Aiden.

"We can't fight all of these."

He didn't disagree.

"…we don't."

The first drone fired.

Then all of them.

The sky lit up.

Beams rained down in perfect synchronization.

Aiden moved instantly, But this time It wasn't about winning.

It was about surviving.

"Kael!" he shouted.

"Get her out!"

Kael hesitated.

"What about you?!"

Aiden dodged another beam—

Barely—

"I'll hold them!"

Hana grabbed his arm.

"No—"

He looked at her.

Calm.

Focused.

"…trust me."

For a second—

She didn't move.

Then—

She clenched her fist.

"…don't die."

Aiden smirked faintly.

"No promises."

Kael pulled her back.

"Move!"

They ran.

The drones adjusted instantly.

Half of them tracked Hana and Kael.

The other half—

Locked onto Aiden.

[PRIMARY TARGET PRIORITIZED]

Aiden stepped forward.

Alone.

The battlefield formed again.

Not as precise.

But enough.

"…alright."

Energy flickered around him.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

But ready.

"…guess I'll test my limits again."

The drones fired.

And Aiden moved.

This time—

Not just to fight.

But to survive something much bigger.

Far away—

Inside the system core—

Final Constant's evolution continued.

[V3 PROTOCOL: 27% COMPLETE]

And now—

It wasn't just watching Aiden.

It was studying humanity.
