Chapter 31 - The Court's Hierarchy

The day after the private0 dinner, Selene was summoned to see Marcus, the head servant who managed hall assignments.

"You did well last night," he said, which was probably the closest thing to a compliment she'd get from him. "No spills, no mistakes, no complaints from the nobles. The King didn't mention you, which means you were appropriately invisible."

Selene nodded, keeping her expression neutral while her heart raced. The King hadn't mentioned her. That was good. That meant he'd dismissed her from his mind, seen her as just another forgettable servant.

"We're moving you to regular great hall service. You'll serve wine and food during feasts and formal dinners. It's more visible work, more demanding, but it also means you're trusted to represent the castle properly."

A promotion. Selene should have felt proud. Instead, she felt trapped.
