Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: Captain America — Teaching You What It Means to Be in the Dark

When Peter heard the headline, he was just about to protest when the office door swung open again.

An enthusiastic blonde reporter walked in, her heels clicking on the floor. Her eyes sparkled with excitement.

"Boss! I just got an exclusive interview with the Captain! The content is enough to make front-page news!"

J. Jonah Jameson's eyelids twitched. Captain America again?

Lately, Captain America's reputation had been all over the place.

One moment he was a hero, the next a villain. A war hero, then a butcher. His public image flipped so often it was dizzying.

"Good or bad?" Jameson asked warily.

He had already decided—he would never again publish anything that discredited Steve Rogers. The last time he ran a negative story, it nearly bankrupted him and even caused trouble with his own son.

He'd learned his lesson. From now on, only positive stories about Captain America. Safer that way—and the paper still sold well. That was what mattered.

"Good thing!" the reporter said quickly.

Jameson took the folder and skimmed it. When he saw Steve's speech, his eyes lit up.

"Excellent! Johnson, put the Captain's story on the front page!"

"Got it, boss. Do you want to change the title?"

Jameson thought for a moment, then raised his hand dramatically and said, "Captain America: A New Era Model of Justice — A Man You Can Always Trust!"

Peter sighed. Right. Total double standards, huh?

Not long after the press conference, several videotapes were sent to television networks, newspapers, and even the Rockefeller family.

When the recipients opened the packages, they all gasped.

Each tape came with a warning label:

"If this tape isn't broadcast on the evening news, we'll blow up your newspaper and TV stations."

The content was explosive—it featured Senator Wickman, who had been missing for some time!

"Hello, everyone. I'm Senator Wickman. It's good to see you again," he said with a cold smile.

"I've served the people faithfully and done plenty of dirty work for Os Rockefeller and his sons.

Cole fell in love with a college girl. When she rejected him, he ordered me to destroy her entire family.

Deka got into a fight in a nightclub. He told me to frame the other guy and have him jailed.

I've done so much for your family—so why did you abandon me?

Well, no more pretending. I'll be honest. I'm the one who kidnapped Deka. If you want him back, prepare two billion dollars in cash.

You have three days—or he dies."

As Wickman grinned bitterly at the camera, the video cut to a tied-up Deka, sitting on a chair.

His face was bruised, his clothes thin, and he was locked inside what looked like a freezing storage room.

"Dad! Help me! I don't want to die!

They hit me, Dad! These filthy nobodies dared to hit me!

It's all Wickman's fault! He's just a dog in our family—how dare he do this?

Dad, please, save me! I'm going to die!"

After watching the video, everyone's reactions were mixed.

Some were shocked by the inside story. Some muttered that the case had gotten complicated. Others were just thrilled to watch the chaos unfold.

Normally, such a videotape would be banned from broadcast. But given the death threats—and the sensational content—TV stations played it anyway.

It was the kind of news that made you cry while eating your "bloody bread."

As the evening news aired, the public was electrified.

"Hey, man! Turn on the TV—huge scandal!"

"Damn, are all these politicians this corrupt now?!"

"These billionaires are disgusting! How can they be so shameless?"

"Careful, that Os guy's part of the Rockefeller family!"

"Whatever. Wickman's no saint either. It's just dog-eat-dog between the rich!"

The real goal of the video wasn't ransom—it was to destroy the image of the elite, to turn the public against them, and make the Rockefellers fight among themselves.

The Rockefeller family had vast wealth, but most of it was tied up in assets. Out of ten billion, maybe only one billion was liquid.

Two billion in cash was impossible.

So Os Rockefeller faced a brutal choice: sacrifice his son or tear his family apart to raise the ransom.

Either option was painful.

When he'd gone after Steve Rogers, he should have expected karma to bite back.

Bang!

In the study of his luxurious villa, Os Rockefeller smashed a priceless vase to the floor.

Earlier that day, he'd partnered with the military to short-sell Oscorp through a government contract scam, aiming to seize its shares.

Oscorp was a high-value company—strong in biotech and medical research.

The U.S. military had tasked them with developing a physical enhancement serum to rival the Super Soldier Serum.

It was a money pit—expensive and full of risk.

Chairman Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) had borrowed from everywhere to keep it going. The formula was nearly complete, but the side effects were still severe and needed time to fix.

The contract was about to expire, and Oscorp's financials looked terrible. Shareholders were furious and demanded Norman explain the missing funds.

Norman had already gone too far to turn back. He could only push forward.

If they stopped now, they'd lose everything. Their only hope was to finish the research, deliver results, and get the military funding.

Os thought his plan was flawless—until his useless son got kidnapped and the ransom demand hit two billion dollars.

"Why don't they just rob a bank?!" he roared.

From the corner, Crossbones muttered, "Isn't this basically robbery?"

Well, maybe it was—but somehow, it felt worse.

For a moment, Os even considered abandoning his son. The boy was nothing but trouble anyway.

He still didn't suspect Steve Rogers. To him, this looked like another job by the Ten Rings. His family had no inside knowledge of their operations.

It was unthinkable that the so-called "symbol of justice"—a man over a hundred years old—could be behind all this.

Captain America was supposed to be the embodiment of morality, the beacon of righteousness. How could he possibly do such a thing?

Even the CIA and S.H.I.E.L.D. hadn't noticed anything amiss. None of them suspected Steve Rogers.

Now Os was stuck—torn between his fortune and his son's life.

Meanwhile, Alexander Pierce, who had just returned home from work, sat silently after watching the news.

Lately, his subordinates seemed to admire Steve more and more.

Is he really the leader now? Pierce wondered.

He had once tried to corner Steve financially, raising questions about unaccounted liabilities to embarrass him.

But somehow, Steve had turned it around—solved the problem—and even gained public support.

Pierce felt a bitter taste in his mouth, like he'd swallowed a fly.

It was like watching his own empire—his S.H.I.E.L.D.—slip away while Captain America took all the glory.

He clenched his fists.

He was surrounded—wolves in front, tigers behind—and all of them followed Steve Rogers.
