As Ada was walking back home, she wondered about the queen's words and shuddered at the reality of the woman's knowledge of her failed escape. She sat on her bed for a while and wept quietly so this was her fate, sealed in a marriage without love till death. She missed her parents and her sister's. The warmth of her bed and the voices of her little ones (The orphans)
For how long would their charade go on? Would she still be a pretentious queen by the age of 50? In just a day of marriage she had gone through so many emotions. Was her life destined to be filled with days like these? She wanted to see her father, but he would never understand. Besides he had move to IBOCHI the neighbouring village as instructed by the king. Ada decided that if the only thing worth living for were the orphans, then she would make them her source of happiness.
According to the queen, she had a very healthy allowance every month. She would look for someone to take care of the children and pay the person a handsome sum. Meanwhile, she still had some silver her father had given her before she left home. She looked for her hidden save inside the wooden wardrobe and started to further her plan.
She would give the silvers to Ebuka (The eldest boy among the orphans ) to get them some food till the prince's promise was in full swing. She got up, wiped her tears and headed for the kitchen. Nikita who always stood at her door had heard Ada crying. She wondered what could make the princess sad barely a day after her wedding to the most eligible bachelor in the whole of Afudo kingdom.
As Ada enter the kitchen room again everyone went quiet and faded into the corners where they worked. Ada requested that the leftover from the morning meal be kept separately and not thrown away. She went into the storage room and saw saw different varieties of food stuff. Her face lit up as she remembered a meal herself and her mother had prepared together a few weeks ago. When the servants saw her carrying carrying food stuff, they stop what they were doing and came to help her. Only Uche remained where she was, washing the plates.
Thank you very much Ada said smiling as they took the food stuff from her.
She called them by their names and told them to stand near her as she worked so they could watch how she prepared the food. Chidinma see how I cut the cassava please cut them like that. Ugochi please dice the vegetables like we did in the morning. Ifeoma please join them in cutting the cassava when you are done with your washing Ada said.
They all went about their assigned tasks as efficiently as possible.
Ugomma Ada called. 'Please come and sit here with me and help me count the cassava we are cutting so I can know how much to prepare for the palace next time.
The princess had called her mam this morning but it was still discomforting to hear. The girls looked as shocked as she felt awkward. Yes your highness she answered quietly.
As the work went on, Ada began to hum a tune. Ifeoma knew the tune and almost started humming with the princess when Uche gave her a stern look Ada caught Uche's silent warning, she stopped humming and turned to
Ifeoma
Do you like to sing? She asked.
Ifeoma smiled and answered shyly 'I try to hum one or two turned your majesty.
The let us hum together I have found that music is very good for the soul. It help take my mind off troubles, will you hum with me? Ada asked Ifeoma nodded shyly.
After the first part of the song, Ifeoma joined Ada quietly at first and after a while she became confident. When they finish everyone except Uche was cheering and laughing. The atmosphere was now more relaxed and Ada knew the girls were getting free around her
