To Lydia's dismay, the hexing effigies the shapeshifter, Cassius had given her were only good for a single use. Hanging them around the target's neck did pacify them, but there was just about enough to turn newly-initiated guard officers to vampires. They would not settle for pitiful drudges to join their ranks.
The vampires roamed the halls savaging any guards they crossed. The hexed officers obediently led the killers to the sleeping quarters of the barracks.
