Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: When the Room Chooses

The tension didn't stay hidden for long.

By the time homeroom began, everyone could feel it. Conversations cut short. Laughter faded quickly. Students kept glancing between two desks—Lucien's and Marcus's—as if waiting to see who would move first.

Neither did.

The teacher walked in, unaware of the quiet war unfolding beneath the surface.

"Today," she announced, "we'll be selecting representatives for the inter-school academic forum."

That single sentence shifted the room.

Lucien straightened slightly.

Marcus lifted his head.

This wasn't just another activity. Representation meant visibility. Authority. Trust.

Exactly the kind of stage neither of them would step away from.

"I'll need two representatives," the teacher continued. "One male, one female."

A pause.

"Any volunteers?"

Marcus stood up immediately.

"I'd like to represent the class," he said clearly.

Murmurs spread.

Lucien didn't stand.

That alone caused whispers.

The teacher nodded. "Thank you, Marcus. Anyone else?"

The silence stretched.

Then Lucien rose calmly to his feet.

"I'll volunteer as well."

The room went completely quiet.

Even the teacher hesitated.

"I… see," she said carefully. "We'll need to decide fairly."

Marcus glanced at Lucien, his expression unreadable. "A vote would be reasonable."

Lucien met his gaze. "Agreed."

The class buzzed as slips of paper were handed out.

This wasn't just about academics anymore. Everyone knew it.

It was a choice.

When the votes were collected, the teacher unfolded them slowly, her expression tightening with each count.

She stopped.

Looked up.

"Well," she said, surprised, "this is unexpected."

The class leaned forward.

"It's a tie."

Gasps rippled through the room.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

Lucien didn't react at all.

The teacher cleared her throat. "In that case, I'll decide."

The room held its breath.

After a moment, she spoke.

"Both of you will represent the class."

The silence shattered into whispers.

Marcus looked sharply at Lucien. "Together?"

Lucien replied calmly, "Looks like neither of us is stepping aside."

During break, the tension followed them.

"This wasn't your plan," Marcus said quietly as they stood near the windows.

"No," Lucien replied. "But it's acceptable."

Marcus frowned. "You're confident."

Lucien turned to him. "You wanted visibility. You have it now."

"And you?" Marcus asked.

Lucien's gaze hardened. "I wanted clarity."

Marcus studied him. "About what?"

Lucien answered without hesitation. "About who the room would choose."

Marcus exhaled slowly. "Seems like they couldn't."

Lucien's lips curved slightly. "That's where pressure begins."

Across the room, students watched carefully.

Two leaders.

One space.

And no clear winner.

For the first time, the classroom wasn't ruled by certainty.

It was ruled by tension.

And everyone knew—

This was only the beginning.
