Chapter 28 - LOOKING FORWARD

The bell had rung, but XinYue lingered by her locker, shoulders tense, fingers fidgeting with the strap of her bag. Her chest felt heavy, like the words Yihan had spilled were still hovering in the air.

Li Hanyan appeared beside her, quiet as always. No theatrics. No exaggerated concern—just him, standing there, steady.

"You okay?" he asked, his voice low, careful.

XinYue met his gaze for a moment, then looked away, trying to push down the discomfort. "I… it's nothing," she said, but even as the words left her mouth, her fingers trembled slightly.

He didn't push. Didn't lecture. He just leaned a fraction closer, the faintest brush of his sleeve against hers. "The past… doesn't matter," he said gently. "Not what people said. Not what happened. None of it defines you."

She blinked, the words sinking slowly. "It still… feels like everyone saw me differently," she admitted, her voice almost a whisper.

"And?" he asked softly, tilting his head. "Does it change what I see?"

Her gaze softened, but she looked down, shy. "No… I guess it doesn't."

He allowed a small smile to curl at the corners of his lips. "Then we don't have to dwell there. We have now. And the future. That's what counts."

A soft laugh interrupted the moment—Zhao Xia had appeared beside them, leaning on the locker. "Aww, look at you two, serious faces. Stop being so dramatic—school isn't a soap opera."

XinYue let out a small laugh, the tension in her shoulders easing. Li Hanyan's eyes followed her, warm, steady, protective. She could feel it, like a quiet anchor in the storm of her thoughts.

"You're not alone," he said quietly, almost to himself, but loud enough for her to hear. "Whatever comes next, I've got your back."

She looked up, catching his gaze fully this time. Something unspoken passed between them—an understanding that went deeper than words. "I know," she whispered.

Zhao Xia clapped her hands, breaking the lingering silence. "Enough of this sappy stuff! You two are making the lockers blush. Come on, let's go. The cafeteria is calling, and I swear if anyone dares give me weird looks today, I'm blaming you both."

XinYue chuckled, stepping back, feeling the weight in her chest finally lift a little. Li Hanyan's lips quirked into a rare, almost-smile, a small acknowledgment of the moment.

And as they walked together toward the hallway, XinYue realized something quietly settled in her chest. The past—the gossip, the judgments, the misunderstandings—none of it mattered anymore. What mattered was now. What mattered was that she had him here, steady and unwavering, and Zhao Xia to stir up chaos and laughter when needed.

For the first time in a long while, XinYue felt the future wasn't something to fear. It was something she could face, step by step, with the people who mattered right beside her.

Li Hanyan knew one thing for sure too: pulling away hadn't erased anything. It had only made it clearer.
