The Solaceon Pokémon Center was buzzing with the usual morning rush—Trainers swapping stories of the nearby ruins, Chanseys wheeling carts of Oran Berries, and the constant chime of the healing machines.
Julian was slumped in a plush armchair in the corner of the lounge, looking like a man who had successfully survived a storm. Sylveon was curled comfortably in his lap, her ribbons draped over his knees like silk scarves. Floette was perched regally atop his red cap, using it as a personal lookout tower, while Togetic sat on his left shoulder, preening her wings with a look of intense concentration.
"Sorry to keep you waiting! The paperwork at the Nursery took longer than I expected."
Julian looked up as Aura—Reggie's younger brother and a formidable Trainer in his own right—approached, adjusting his gear. He immediately took in the sight of Julian's "living accessories" and chuckled.
"No worries at all," Julian said, giving Sylveon's ears a casual, rhythmic scritch. "We just pulled up a few minutes ago. Besides, I'm in no rush to leave Solaceon today. I've got a newborn little sprout to look after, so we're taking it slow."
Aura's eyes scanned Julian's immediate vicinity. "A newborn? Who's the lucky addition? I haven't seen them yet. And speaking of which, where's that Growlithe from yesterday? I thought he was practically glued to your side."
Julian's hand paused on Sylveon's head. A faint, guilty cough escaped his throat. "Them? Well, let's just say they suffered a bit of a... sleep deficit last night. I've let them retreat into their Poké Balls to catch up on some much-needed peace and quiet. It's a bit of a shame; you won't get to meet the new guy today."
Julian pulled out two Poké Balls—one the classic red-and-white, the other a sleek Luxury Ball—and held them up. Inside, the two were currently enjoying a silent, snuggle-free sanctuary.
"Is that so? That's a real pity," Aura said, sounding genuinely disappointed. "I still haven't seen your full roster."
"Well, if destiny is on our side, you'll see them soon enough," Julian said, tucking the balls back into his pocket. "I can at least give you a name to put to the mystery. The new little one is a Carbink—a Rock and Fairy dual-type. Like Floette here, they're usually found back in the Kalos region, so it's a bit of a rarity in Sinnoh."
"Carbink, huh? Rock and Fairy..." Aura mused. "That's a unique combination. Very sturdy, but with that mystical Fairy edge."
"Exactly. I won't disturb their nap now, but keep an eye out for us. I'm planning to hit both the Sinnoh League and the Grand Festival. If you're there, you'll see them in action." Julian's eyes sparkled with a competitive glint. Then, his expression turned serious as he reached into his backpack. "In the meantime, I'm entrusting this to you. Can you make sure it reaches the Lucario at the Veilstone Gym?"
He handed over a thick, cream-colored envelope, sealed with a specialized wax stamp.
Aura blinked, staring at the letter as if it might bite him. "Wait... the Veilstone Gym's... Lucario? You want me to give a letter to a Pokémon? Not the Gym Leader, Maylene?"
Julian nodded firmly. "Yes. The Lucario. He's the one who needs to read it. Maylene is great, but Lucario handles the... let's call it 'Aura-related correspondence.'"
Aura looked at Julian, then at the letter, then back to Julian. His expression was a mix of confusion and "I've stopped asking questions about this guy," but he tucked the letter safely into his inner pocket. "Alright. Since you're so sure about it, I'll make sure it gets into his paws."
"I'm counting on you!" Julian grinned. "Oh, and before you go—take this. Consider it a souvenir of our little archaeology trip."
Julian pulled a glossy photo from a side pocket. It was the picture they'd taken yesterday in the golden fields outside the ruins. In the shot, Aura and Julian stood side by side, flanked by Aura's intimidating Drapion. Julian was holding Sylveon, with Floette sitting blue-flower-first on his hat, Togetic on his shoulder, and a very happy Growlithe sitting by his boot. Everyone—human and Pokémon alike—was wearing a genuine smile.
Aura took the photo, his eyes softening as he looked at it. "Thank you, Julian. This is great. I'll keep this as a reminder that not every day in Sinnoh has to be a grind."
He extended a hand. "I'll be cheering for you in the Sinnoh League. I want to see what that Carbink can really do. Go out there and take the Champion title, yeah?"
"Count on it! And good luck to you at the Silver Conference in Johto! Don't come back without a trophy!" Julian laughed, shaking Aura's hand firmly.
"Floette-flo!" "Jia-gei!" "Fly-ah!"
As Aura disappeared into the crowd, heading for the route toward Veilstone, Julian stepped out of the Pokémon Center. The midday sun was high, bathing the dirt paths of Solaceon in a warm, sleepy glow.
Julian looked up at Togetic, who was currently tapping her chin with a small wing. "Alright, mission accomplished. Now, about your 'Quest for Mediocrity.' Aura mentioned a local spot that supposedly serves the best curry in the region. Since you're so curious about food that wasn't cooked by me, shall we give it a shot?"
"Jia-gei-gu! (Yes! Let's go! My palate is ready for a baseline comparison!)" Togetic nodded enthusiastically.
"Floette-flo! (Curry rice... I can already smell the spices!)" Floette chimed in, a tiny bead of drool forming at the corner of her mouth.
"Hey, hey, hey! Floette!" Julian reached up, feeling the impending moisture on his head via his Aura. "Wipe that up! If you ruin this hat, you're paying for the dry cleaning!"
He pulled out a small, silk handkerchief he kept specifically for Floette's messy face and poked her cheek with it.
"Leafeon~ (I'm on it, I'm on it~)" Floette chirped, daintily wiping her mouth before tossing the handkerchief back into Julian's open backpack with the precision of a basketball pro.
"What about you, Sylveon? You okay with curry? Or are you going to demand a five-course meal?" Julian looked down, tugging playfully at the ribbon feeler wrapped around his wrist.
Sylveon flicked her tail, looking distinctly unimpressed. "Fly-ah, sylveon-fly~ (I suppose I can tolerate a public establishment. But if the spice level is offensive or the texture is mushy, I'm switching to my emergency Pokéblock stash. You did bring the honey-berry blend, right?)"
Julian shook his backpack, the familiar rattle of containers echoing from within. "Of course. I never leave home without your high-maintenance snacks."
"Floette-flo! (Stop talking and start walking, Julian! Aura said the place gets a massive line! If we miss the lunch rush, I'm going to start eating your hat for real!)" Floette poked his cap, her wings buzzing with impatience.
"Alright, alright! We're moving! Sylveon, keep up!"
Julian broke into a light jog, his boots thudding against the packed earth. The sudden movement caught the two perched Pokémon off guard.
"Sylveon-fly! (Hey! Watch the feeler! You're dragging me like a kite!)" Sylveon barked, her four legs blurring into a run as she matched Julian's pace, her ribbons fluttering behind her like festive streamers.
"Jia-gei-gu! (Julian! Slow down! I'm going to fall off!)" Togetic squawked, her little arms wrapped tightly around Julian's neck, her eyes wide as the world rushed past.
"Floette-flo~ (Oh dear, looks like you're still a rookie at the 'Julian-Express'~)" Floette teased. She had her tiny hands planted firmly on the crown of the hat, her body stabilized by a faint, invisible shimmer of Psychic energy. Having spent years as Julian's primary "headpiece," she was as steady as a gargoyle on a cathedral. "You'll learn to balance eventually, little sister!"
The group zoomed through the quaint streets of Solaceon, passing the stone-built houses and the smell of fresh hay from the Miltank pens. Before long, they reached a small, wooden-framed building with a sign that read 'The Spicy Magmar's Curry House'.
Julian skidded to a halt, his chest heaving slightly. He looked at the scene in front of the restaurant and his jaw dropped.
A line of people—Trainers, locals, and even a few tired-looking hikers—stretched around the corner and down the block. The air was thick with the scent of cumin, turmeric, and slow-cooked meat, but the wait looked like it would take years.
"Wow... Aura wasn't kidding," Julian muttered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "This place is a madhouse."
"FLORETTE-FLO!!! (WHAT?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!)"
Floette's screech was so loud that several people in the back of the line jumped. She stood up on Julian's hat, her tiny face contorted in a mix of hunger and absolute betrayal.
"FLOGES-FLO! (WHEN ARE WE SUPPOSED TO EAT?! I CAN SEE THE CURRY FROM HERE! I CAN SMELL IT! IF I DON'T HAVE A SPOON IN MY HAND IN TEN MINUTES, THERE WILL BE A LOCALIZED WEATHER EVENT!)"
Julian winced as several Trainers turned to look at the screaming flower. "Shh! Quiet down! We'll wait, okay? It'll be worth it... I hope."
Sylveon looked at the line, then at her own perfectly groomed paws, and let out a long, dramatic sigh. "Fly-ah... (I should have stayed in the Poké Ball with Growlithe. At least he's dreaming of food that doesn't require a thirty-minute wait in the sun.)"
Togetic, however, looked at the long line with a strange sense of fascination. "Jia-gei? (Is this part of the 'Normal Person' experience? Standing in a line until your legs hurt just for a bowl of sauce? This world is even more mysterious than I thought!)"
Julian sighed, adjusting his backpack. "Welcome to the real world, Togetic. Sometimes, the most legendary battles aren't against Gym Leaders... they're against the lunch rush."
