Chapter 5 - First beacon and trouble

The ground beneath them began to rumble as the last stone warrior crumbled into dust. Alice wiped the sweat from her forehead. Her sword still glowing faintly red in her hand. CJ was catching his breath, his green aura slowly fading back into his arms. "You good?" Alice asked, looking over at him. "Yeah, I'm alright," CJ responded, rolling his shoulders. "But yo, when did you get that fast? I barely saw you move." Alice looked down at her sword, confused herself. "I don't know. It just felt natural, like my body knew what to do before my brain did." CJ nodded slowly. "The game must be enhancing our abilities the more we fight. That's probably why everyone's powers are showing up now." "Makes sense," Alice responded, sheathing her sword back into her chest interface. "Come on, we gotta keep moving. That beacon isn't going to activate itself."

They continued through the ruins. The pale yellow sky casting eerie shadows across the broken streets. The farther they walked, the more the city seemed to shift and glitch buildings flickering in and out of existence, gravity pulling in strange directions. It was like the game itself was unstable. "This place gives me the creeps," CJ muttered. "Same," Alice agreed, "but we don't have a choice. We either keep going or we die here."

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Fall Arena, Miriam, David, and Ace were making their way toward the first beacon. The air around them was thick with tension. "So we all just gonna ignore the fact that David can turn his healing into straight-up destruction?" Ace said, breaking the silence. David shrugged, trying to play it cool even though his hands were still shaking. "I didn't even know I could do that until just now. I was just thinking about how I wanted those things gone, and then boom, they were gone." "That's actually insane," Miriam said, her flames still flickering at her fingertips. "It's like the game is pulling out abilities we didn't even know we had." "Yeah, well, let's hope we got enough abilities to beat whatever's waiting for us at that beacon," Ace said, his eyes scanning the area. He kicked a piece of rubble and it morphed into a sharp spike in his hand. He smirked. "This construction power is kinda dope though, not gonna lie." "Just don't get cocky," Miriam warned. "We barely survived those stone warriors. And if the system fused 3 levels together, that means the enemies are gonna be 3 times stronger too." David gulped. "Why'd you have to say that out loud?" "Because it's the truth," Miriam said flatly. "We need to be ready for anything."

As if on cue, the ground in front of them split open. A massive stone hand shot out, followed by another, and then a head a towering stone golem, easily three stories tall, with glowing red eyes and cracks running through its body like veins of lava. "Oh, you gotta be kidding me," David whispered. The golem roared, shaking the entire arena. Debris rained down around them. "Move!" Miriam shouted, pushing David and Ace out of the way as the golem's fist came crashing down where they had just been standing. Ace rolled to his feet and immediately pressed his hands to the ground. The concrete twisted and spiraled upward, forming a barrier between them and the golem. "That's not gonna hold it for long!" "Then we don't give it long!" Miriam's hands ignited. Flames of blue roared to life from her fingers. But since she was still at a low level, the flames were not that impressive. She launched a fireball at the golem's chest. It exploded on impact, cracking the stone, but the golem barely flinched. "David! We need you!" Ace yelled. "I ..I don't know if I can do it again!" David stammered, backing up. "You better figure it out fast!" Miriam snapped, dodging another slam from the golem.

David clenched his fists, his mind racing. He thought back to the stone warriors how angry he'd been, how desperate. He closed his eyes and focused on that feeling, on the desire to protect his team, to survive. His hands began to glow, but this time the light was darker, more unstable. A voice in his mind whispered, "Destruction." He opened his eyes and threw his hands forward. A wave of destructive energy shot out, slamming into the golem's legs. The stone cracked, then shattered, and the golem collapsed forward with a deafening crash. For a moment, there was silence. Then Ace let out a breath. "Yo, David just took down a whole golem." David stared at his hands, shaking. "I... I did that?" "You did," Miriam said, walking over and putting a hand on his shoulder. "And we're gonna need you to do it over and over again until we survive this thing." David nodded, still in shock. "Alright. Alright, I got this." "Good," Miriam said. "Because look." In the distance, glowing faintly through the haze, was the first beacona tall, crystalline structure pulsing with light. "Let's finish this," Ace said.

Back with Alice and CJ, they finally reached the second beacon. It stood in the center of a crumbling plaza, surrounded by broken statues and flickering holographic ads from a world long gone. "This is it," Alice said, approaching the beacon. CJ stayed close, his aura hands at the ready. "You sure it's safe?" "Only one way to find out." Alice reached out and touched the beacon. Immediately, it flared to life, light shooting up into the sky. A message appeared in front of her: BEACON 2 ACTIVATED. 1/3 COMPLETE. "One down," Alice said. "Two to go." But before they could celebrate, the ground began to shake. Something far worse than stone warriors began to emerge. "CJ..." Alice said slowly, gripping her sword. "I see it," CJ said, his voice tense. A figure stepped into the light a knight clad in black armor, a spade symbol glowing on its chest. And it wasn't alone. Dozens more appeared behind it, all armed, all ready to fight. "Looks like the game's not done with us yet," Alice said. CJ cracked his knuckles, his aura flaring. "Then let's show it what we got."
