Two weeks had passed since the sky over Konoha was illuminated by the flash of Minato Namikaze's victory.
In the office of Kanzaki's main tower, the atmosphere was unusually thick. The air was heavy with the scent of fresh scrolls and tea. Rasa, Pakura, and Sasori were gathered around a tactical map of the continent, whose borders had been redrawn by conquest over the last few months.
The report was clear: Minato was the new Hokage, Danzō had died in a coup attempt, and Konoha was calling for a new summit to sign a definitive peace treaty.
"Is it wise to return to the summit after what happened last time?" Rasa asked, crossing his arms as he observed the red markings representing their advance into the Land of Fire.
"The last time, the summit was a trap planned by Orochimaru. Nothing guarantees us that the 'Yellow Flash' isn't just as treacherous as his predecessor. He could be inviting us to a peace table just to seal our exits and finish what the war could not."
"Minato is not Orochimaru," Sasori intervened, calmly practicing hand seals. "He is dangerous, yes, but his nature is not that of a gutter conspirator. He is a man of ideals, and that makes him predictable in certain aspects. Even so, entering the territory of the Land of Iron again sounds like an unnecessary trap for a village that has already won what it wanted on the battlefield."
Pakura, who was handling the tea in the room, looked at Daigo, waiting for his verdict. Daigo stood by the window, watching Kanzaki grow. What was once an outpost was becoming a fortified citadel. Ninjas were raising new walls, and the surrounding fields were beginning to show their first sprouts after having been destroyed by Konoha.
"We will go," Daigo sentenced, turning around with a calm smile on his face as he stepped forward to grab a cup of tea. "Even if it is a trap, I believe we are ready to face it. Besides, Minato is not that kind of person, so I'm sure everything will be fine."
The journey to the Land of Iron was a procession of silence and vigilance. Unlike the previous summit, where the chaos of war was at its peak, the world seemed to be holding its breath.
The small villages they passed through showed the scars of the Third Great Ninja War: burned fields, makeshift orphanages, and a hunger that could be felt in the gazes of the civilians.
Daigo observed all this without showing much emotion; he knew that war brought this upon the weak, but that was exactly why he had to become stronger and help Suna, otherwise, they would be the ones dying of hunger.
Upon reaching the borders of the Land of Iron, the cold bit to the bone, and even though they had been there some time ago, they hadn't grown accustomed to the chill. Pakura was the only one unaffected, as a small sphere of Shakuton(Scorch Style) melted the frost around her.
The Grand Conference Hall was freezing despite the braziers lit in the corners. This time, there was no fanfare or extensive ceremonial presentations. The time for courtesies had run out.
Minato Namikaze was the first to arrive. He sat at the head of the table assigned to Konoha, wearing his Hokage cloak with a mix of humility and a new-found firmness. His gaze, once kind, now possessed the hardness of tempered steel.
Daigo entered second, his cloak billowing behind him like a current of wind. He sat to the left of Minato, glancing at Minato's cloak.
"I don't know, even though it's very similar to mine," Daigo said, looking at Minato's cloak, which was identical except for the flames instead of the wind.
"Kazekage, I doubt my Hokage cloak is the same as yours," Minato said, avoiding looking at Daigo's cloak.
At this, Daigo simply smiled, leaned back in his chair, and waited for the others.
Shortly after, the others arrived. Onoki, the Third Tsuchikage, floated toward his seat with an expression of bitterness etched into his wrinkles; Iwa had lost far too many resources and ninjas.
The Third Raikage of Kumo entered with an active aura of electricity, followed by Killer B. Finally, the delegation from Kirigakure made its appearance, led by Mangetsu Hōzuki, who wore the Mizukage hat.
The atmosphere was electric, almost suffocating. All the Kages were attentive to each other's movements. On the contrary, Konoha's and Daigo's delegations remained calm, projecting a confidence that unsettled the others. They knew they held the upper hand.
Mifune, the leader of the samurai, stood up in the center of the circular table and struck the floor with the scabbard of his sword a sharp sound that silenced the whispers.
"I give the floor to the Fifth Hokage of the Leaf, Minato Namikaze, who has convened this meeting under the auspices of neutrality," Mifune announced.
Minato rose slowly. His eyes swept across the table, stopping for a second on each Kage.
"This war has lasted too long," Minato began, his voice resonating with crystalline clarity in the room.
"It has taken fathers, sons, teachers, and brothers. Konoha proposes an immediate ceasefire and the signing of a definitive peace treaty based on the restoration of borders and mutual respect. The Third Great Ninja War must end today, before things get worse than they already have."
A heavy silence, thick with skepticism, fell over the table. Onoki cleared his throat to protest Iwa's losses, but before he could utter a word, Daigo coughed lightly. It was a small sound, but in that absolute silence, it drew everyone's attention to him.
"I would agree to that peace," Daigo said, leaning back in his chair with elegance, crossing his hands on the table. His gaze locked onto Minato's.
"As long as the territory my forces currently occupy in the Land of Fire is legally recognized as the absolute property of the Great Sand Village at one hundred percent. I will not accept a peace that means returning what my men won with blood while others hid in offices."
Onoki and the Raikage tensed visibly. Minato looked at Daigo without blinking. He remembered perfectly the previous summit where Daigo let him live; he remembered the ambition in his eyes. Minato knew that Daigo did not seek the destruction of Konoha, but rather his own place in the sun, but as Hokage, he could not simply give away the sovereignty of his lands.
"I accept that Suna retains its sovereignty and that the effort of its ninjas be recognized," Minato replied with admirable diplomatic calm.
"But we cannot cede all the territory advanced to your current lines. You have reached much further than the original treaty stipulated, entering critical residential zones."
Daigo then entered a mode of implacable negotiation. His tone was calm, as if he were giving a lesson in political realism to children.
"Let's speak honestly, Hokage. Those 'critical zones' are empty because your ninjas fled. What I ask for is total sovereignty over the Kanzaki region and a belt of fertile land around it. Open fields, perfect for planting and sustenance. Kanzaki will no longer be an outpost; it will be the piece Suna never had. If Konoha accepts this, Kanzaki will become a wall that protects your northern border from any future incursion from any other village. It's a fair trade: land for eternal security."
After hours of dialectical tension where Daigo rebutted every one of Minato's legal points, Minato finally nodded.
He understood it was an acceptable price to prevent Daigo from deciding to march toward the gates of the Leaf while they were weakened.
With Suna and Konoha having reached an agreement, the other Kages tried to outsmart Minato.
Onoki demanded war reparations, claiming the Leaf had used forbidden tactics. However, Minato, proving why he was the leader of the strongest village, turned the tables on them.
Using detailed intelligence reports, he demonstrated the atrocities committed by Iwa and Kumo in neutral lands, forcing them to pay massive reparations for the damage caused to the Land of Fire and its neighbors.
Under Daigo's watchful eye, who seemed to enjoy the humiliation of the other Kages, the documents were signed one by one.
The Third Ninja War had officially ended.
At the end of the session, the sense of relief was palpable among the samurai, but not among the ninjas.
Daigo retired to his private quarters within Mifune's fortress to prepare for his departure. Pakura was reviewing the treaty scrolls and Sasori was putting away his tools when sharp, rhythmic knocks on the door interrupted the peace.
Daigo, whose seismic sense was always active, knew that three figures were approaching.
"Come in," Daigo said, without moving from his chair.
The door opened with a metallic groan and Mangetsu Hōzuki, the new Mizukage, entered. He did not come alone; he was flanked by Ringo Ameyuri, who carried the lightning swords with a predatory smile, and a young Yagura Karatachi, whose childish face contrasted with the massive spiked mace he carried on his back.
"To what do we owe the honor of this visit, Mangetsu?" Daigo asked, pointing to an empty chair in front of him. "I thought the Mist was in a hurry to return to its islands now that the sea is safe again."
"I'll get straight to the point, Daigo,"
Mangetsu began, ignoring the offer to sit. His hands pressed firmly onto the wooden table.
"As before, we want the swords. The Kabutowari and the Samehada are national treasures of Kirigakure. We cannot allow our village's pride and the legacy of the Seven Swordsmen to remain in the hands of the Sand."
Daigo let out a short, dry laugh one that held not a hint of humor. He looked at Mangetsu with a depth that made Ringo place her hand on the hilt of her swords.
"I told you on the battlefield and at the previous summit, and I repeat it here, on the sacred ground of the samurai, Mangetsu," Daigo said, leaning forward.
"There is no way I will return those weapons without receiving something of the same level in return. In war, swords belong to the one who tears them from the hands of the dead. If your people were too weak to keep them, that is not my problem. And I doubt the Mist has anything in its inventory worth as much as those legendary blades and I doubt you want to give me one of your two Bijuu."
Daigo expected Mangetsu to respond with threats of war, something that would have allowed him to humiliate him once more, but the Mizukage's expression changed.
It became somber, almost desperate. He looked at Yagura and then fixed his gaze back on Daigo.
"Would you be interested in the Nanabi (The Seven-Tails) in exchange for the two swords you possess?" Mangetsu blurted out.
The silence that followed was absolute.
Sasori, who was listening, paid closer attention. Pakura did the same, focusing entirely. A Tailed Beast was the ultimate weapon of mass destruction; possessing one meant the balance or the fall of an entire nation.
"Continue," Daigo ordered, his interest fully piqued.
"We will deliver the Jinchūriki of the Seven-Tails to you," Mangetsu explained in a low voice. "It is a beast that is currently within our reach after certain movements in the village of the waterfall. But in exchange, we don't just want the swords. We want a non-aggression pact and something more of importance... we are talking about a Bijuu, Daigo. Its value is incalculable, much greater than two pieces of steel, no matter how magical they are."
Daigo shook his head immediately, his voice reclaiming that tone of command that admitted no discussion.
"You are the ones who want the swords desperately, not me. My swords don't eat, they don't need seals, and they don't go crazy destroying villages. A Bijuu is a logistical headache. I will give nothing beyond the swords.
And let's speak of reality: how do you plan to deliver the Seven-Tails to me without the Hokage or the others finding out? The war has just ended. If it's discovered that the Mist is moving Jinchūrikis illegally across the continent, the Fourth Ninja War will start before the ink on this peace treaty even dries."
Mangetsu adjusted his hat, hiding his eyes behind the shadow of the brim.
"That is our logistical problem, not yours. Your only task is to deliver the swords at the meeting point my messengers will indicate. We will ensure the Nanabi reaches the meeting point where you will hand over the swords."
Daigo analyzed the risks in his mind with lightning speed. Having a Tailed Beast under his direct command, outside Suna's official control, would consolidate Suna as a power far stronger than before, at the same level as Iwa, Kumo, or Konoha. It was the missing piece in his power puzzle.
With the Nanabi, no one, not even Konoha, would dare question the borders of his new nation.
"Deal," Daigo declared, extending his hand across the table.
Mangetsu did not shake it. He simply nodded, turned around, and left the room followed by his escorts. The door closed behind them, leaving Daigo alone with his thoughts.
"A Bijuu..." Sasori murmured, breaking the silence. "That complicates things, Daigo. Maintaining a Seven-Tails beast is something I don't think Suna can do."
"Why not? Don't worry, for the sealing, Grandmother Chiyo must have something we can improve with Uzumaki help," Daigo said.
"Uzumaki, Daigo? But if they were all exterminated... I think only one remains, and he is Konoha's Jinchūriki," Pakura said, confused.
"There you are wrong. Although 90% were, there is a 10% that managed to escape, and I have the location of one who can help us.
Are you interested in going on an S-rank mission to find her, Sasori?" Daigo asked, looking at him.
