The silence that followed Daigo's declaration of war was not an absence of sound, but a physical pressure that warped reality in the forest clearing with the weight of his chakra.
The air, saturated with moisture that turned into frost instantly, began to vibrate with a frequency that made the swords of the samurai stationed kilometers away in Mifune's fortress rattle within their iron sheaths.
Minato Namikaze, the man whose mere mention in war reports caused entire villages to order an immediate retreat, remained motionless behind a crystal barrier that Daigo had summoned with a single hand seal.
His blue eyes, usually filled with a spark of kindness and unshakable determination, were now clouded by a shadow of doubt he had never experienced before.
Beside him, Hiashi Hyūga kept his Byakugan activated to its limit; the veins around his temples throbbed violently as he tried to process the phenomenon before him.
Daigo's chakra was no normal current; it was a tide of purified energy that solidified in the air before it could even be molded by manual seals.
"Don think you can do whatever you want, Yellow Rat of Konoha," Daigo repeated, his voice low yet cutting through the whistling wind like a surgical blade.
"You have lost the right to face me on equal terms."
Daigo turned completely toward Orochimaru, utterly ignoring the presence of the Yellow Flash. To Daigo, Minato was no longer a worthy obstacle; he was a living disappointment.
His attention was now centered exclusively on the Sannin, who observed him from atop a giant snake with a mixture of scientific curiosity and predatory malice.
Daigo closed his eyes and expanded his lungs. It was no ordinary inhalation. His ribs expanded beyond human limits, absorbing pure oxygen and transforming it into an alchemical fuel within his cells.
"Seven Heavens Breathing: Third Breath, Activation."
An intense pink, almost violet aura erupted from Daigo's pores with the force of a controlled explosion. His muscles became defined with a marble-like hardness beneath his clothes, and his skin took on a vibrant tone, charged with electrical vitality.
As he exhaled, the vapor leaving his lips did not disperse with the wind; it turned into tiny crystals that fell to the ground with a metallic clink.
NoHis nervous system accelerated to levels that defied known biology. The world around him slowed down. He could see every individual snowflake suspended in the air, every blink of Orochimaru's golden pupils, and even the fluctuation of chakra in Minato's hands.
"What a fascinating technique, Daigo-kun," Orochimaru hissed, his bifid tongue tasting the air thick with mineral particles. "That technique is quite curious; Jiraiya told me it aids you physically. I'll have to put it to the test."
"You talk too much, Orochimaru. I don't have time to listen to you," Daigo replied, before launching himself toward Orochimaru in a blur of speed.
With a burst of speed that cracked the solid rock beneath his feet, Daigo lunged into the attack. It wasn't a run; it was a streak of pink light that crossed the clearing in a microsecond.
Orochimaru, proving why he was considered a genius among geniuses, did not flinch. His hands moved with an agility that surpassed the perception of any common ninja, weaving seals in an almost invisible dance of fingers.
"Fire Style: Great Fire Annihilation."
A wall of blinding orange flames erupted from Orochimaru's mouth. The heat was so intense that the snow in a twenty-meter radius evaporated instantly, creating a curtain of scalding steam that clouded the vision.
But Daigo did not stop. He covered his arms in crystal to avoid burns and simply tore through the fire, dispersing the flames with a movement of his arms as if they were mere gusts of wind.
Emerging from the curtain of fire, Daigo launched a punch directly at Orochimaru's solar plexus. The Sannin dodged by twisting his body with reptilian elasticity, but the brush of Daigo's gauntlet against the Hokage robes was enough to activate the "living" property of his Shōton.
As soon as the crystal touched the fabric, it began to transmute. Crystal growth spread through the fibers, crawling across the entire cloak.
Noticing this, the Sannin did not hesitate to use a substitution to move away, sliding out of his clothes and leaving behind an empty crystal shell.
"Interesting!" Orochimaru exclaimed with a sibilant laugh. "This is something new. Your crystal didn't do this before... this makes things much more serious!"
Orochimaru decided he could no longer hold back. He performed a series of seals to invoke the element opposite to the previous one.
"Water Style: Water Shockwave."
A massive amount of water erupted from Orochimaru's mouth, forming a torrent that sought to crush Daigo.
The young Kazekage, however, simply struck the surface of the water with his open palm.
"Crystal release: Crystal World."
The water did not wet him. At the instant of contact, the liquid solidified into a perfect crystalline structure. Orochimaru's great tsunami was frozen in mid-air without even scratching Daigo, turned into a translucent ten-meter-high sculpture that glowed with an internal radiance.
Daigo ran up the slope of the crystal wave, leaping from the crest directly toward his enemy with a crystal spear forming in his right hand.
Orochimaru responded with the lightning element to try and shatter Daigo's structure.
"Lightning Style: False Darkness."
Spears of blue electricity shot from his fingers. Daigo, using the heightened perception of the Third Breath, dodged them in the air to land on the ground and sweep Orochimaru's feet.
The Sannin leaped, but Daigo only smirked, touching the ground so that it began to turn into crystal. Orochimaru could only fall into Daigo's trap.
Daigo didn't let him escape, hitting his chest with a kick that sent him flying toward the frozen trees of the Land of Iron.
Without stopping, Daigo activated the Fourth Breath, gaining even more speed and appearing above Orochimaru. The Sannin raised his hand, and hundreds of snakes went to attack Daigo, who destroyed them all with a single punch.
He managed to grab him, slamming him into the ground, and with his hand wrapped in chakra, he touched Orochimaru's chest, which began to turn into a crystal statue.
However, using his Seismic Sense all the time, Daigo noticed that this was a Mud Clone just as the real Orochimaru approached from behind with his Kusanagi to stab him.
Without turning, Daigo kicked upward with his leg, knocking the blade into the air, dodging the blow with elegance before spinning on his other leg in a sharp arc to strike the sword hand.
This caused him to drop the sword, though Orochimaru, being the snake he is, stretched in a revolting way to recover it. Daigo leaped back to avoid being cut in half, noticing the sword was edged with Wind Style chakra.
The intensity of the combat rose to the level of a Kage-tier battle, using high-level jutsu to such an extent that even Pakura and the others had to move away to avoid being caught in the range of the attacks.
Orochimaru used a constant rotation of the five elements: launching gusts of wind to try and chip Daigo's crystal and using earth jutsu to trap his feet or break the crystal. But Daigo was implable.
Every time Orochimaru launched a jutsu, Daigo counterattacked with a perfect defense. The battlefield was turning into a graveyard of precious crystals: every gust of wind from Orochimaru was caught and turned into crystal dust, and every earth jutsu was dodged or blocked by crystal walls.
Daigo finally managed to corner the Sannin after a series of Taijutsu strikes that made the air vibrate with sonic waves.
With an upward movement, Daigo connected a kick that launched Orochimaru into the sky, and before he could recover, Daigo appeared over him in a burst of pink light.
"Crystal release: Crystal Thorns."
Hundreds of crystal stakes materialized around Orochimaru, converging toward him like magnets.
The Sannin was impaled in multiple spots and slammed into the ground with a force that created a twenty-meter-diameter crater.
Orochimaru's body remained trapped, with the crystal invading his wounds and beginning to turn his blood into solid rubies. It seemed to be the definitive end of the Snake of Konoha.
However, a wet and disgusting sound broke the calm of the crater. The jaw of Orochimaru's impaled body unhinged completely, opening at an impossible angle.
From the depths of his own throat, pale hands covered in a shiny mucus emerged. With a sibilant effort, a new Orochimaru slid out of the previous body, emerging completely uninjured, without a single scratch and with his chakra restored, leaving behind his old petrified shell.
The new Orochimaru stood up, elegantly wiping the remains of fluid from his face while observing Daigo with exasperating calm.
"You seem far too rushed, Daigo-kun," the Sannin hissed, reclaiming his mocking tone.
"Do you not trust your ninjas? Is that the reason for your desperation? Do you have so little faith that Rasa and the jinchuriki can resist the siege of Root and Konoha in Kanzaki that you are willing to exhaust your chakra right here, trying to kill me in a duel you cannot win quickly?"
Daigo only breathed lightly. His lungs filled with air, and he felt how well his body and his reserves were currently holding up; he had never felt so good hitting a snake or wasting his chakra.
He looked at Orochimaru with a predatory smile, like someone who wanted to continue until he had utterly destroyed him.
"I know perfectly well that my ninjas are not weak, Orochimaru," Daigo replied, walking slowly toward him. "They are capable of resisting their attack; they are aware of the trust I placed in them. But it seems you have forgotten what it means to be a leader if you ever even knew."
Daigo took a step forward, and with every footfall, the crystal beneath his feet extended, devouring the snow and turning the earth into a pink mirror.
"The duty of a Kage is not to stay behind, hidden in the shadows of an office, watching his men die just to buy him a few minutes of security or valuable information.
The duty of a Kage is to be at the front. He is the shield that receives the hardest blows and the spear that breaks the impossible obstacles so that his people can walk safely behind him."
"I am not like you, Orochimaru. I do not see my ninjas as sacrifice pieces on a board. I am the tip of the spear of Sunagakure, and if I have to burn my chakra to ensure they live to see the dawn, I will do so without a second's hesitation. Because my village isn't the safest place for nothing it's because I will be there."
Orochimaru narrowed his golden eyes, his face contorting in a grimace of annoyance at Daigo's moral conviction.
A few meters away, Minato Namikaze lowered his gaze, the Kazekage's words sinking into his chest like a frozen dagger.
The "Yellow Flash" of Konoha found no answer to the purity of his former rival's purpose, though everything hit him directly in the chest as if he had been pierced through the heart.
The wind blew furiously, tossing Daigo's ash-grey hair while the crystal forest around him began to glow with a blinding intensity, preparing for the next round of a battle that would define the course of history.
