The massive earthquake made everyone nearby stop what they were doing to watch.
The cause was Pakura, who had unleashed a Shakuton technique against Ameyuri Ringo. Ringo only survived thanks to the lightning-fast speed of the shroud covering her body.
"Hahaha, that was fascinating! Finally, a kunoichi who can actually give me a fight," Ringo said, twirling her Kibas wildly in her hands.
"I could say the same, though I need to end this battle and help the others," Pakura replied.
A giant sphere of Shakuton loomed behind her back. The technique in question was the most powerful in Pakura's arsenal: Shakuton: Taiyō no Kōrin (Scorch Style: Solar Crown).
As the name suggested, this technique acted as both offense and defense.
Its defense created an aura of heat so intense that even Pakura's accustomed body felt as if it were slowly burning.
Its offense allowed her to break off pieces of the giant sphere to use as jutsus, hurling them at her opponents.
Watching from a distance, Ringo knew that approaching was dangerous; she had felt her sweat evaporate the moment she got even slightly close to that scorching sphere.
Deciding to turn the engagement into a battle of jutsus to see how Pakura would respond, she launched her first attack.
"Raiton: Raigyo (Lightning Style: Lightning eels)!" Ringo shouted.
From her hands, bolts of electricity shaped like eels shot toward Pakura at high speed.
However, to Ringo's surprise, a spear of Scorch Style erupted from the giant sphere behind Pakura, obliterating the attack instantly.
"Simple jutsus like that won't do a thing to me. Use your strongest move, because once I start moving, it will be your end," Pakura said seriously. Her eyes flickered occasionally toward the direction of Daigo's fight, where the ground seemed to tremble from the jutsus being traded there.
Feeling underestimated, Ringo bit her arm and decided to show her why she was a wielder of the Kibas.
Grabbing the blades tightly, she raised them to the sky, and the clouds above began to erupt with lightning.
"Let's see if you can stop this! Raiton: Raisō: Ikazuchi no Kuchiki (Lightning Style: Thunder Strike Thunder Tree)!" Ringo screamed.
As if sensing the command, the clouds unleashed a massive bolt of yellow lightning directly at Pakura.
Noticing the dangerous attack, Pakura didn't weave another jutsu; she simply controlled the giant sphere behind her and moved it into the path of the incoming bolt.
The lightning struck the sphere, forcing it toward the ground, but the orb held firm, fueled by Pakura's immense chakra and will.
Finally, another explosion of power occurred, making the earth shake once again.
Pakura, seeing that her sphere had survived albeit significantly weakened decided she had played defense long enough.
Her feet barely touched the charred ground as she moved with incredible speed, propelled by bursts of heat. Ringo did not back down. The Mist swordswoman was known for her love of danger and her volatile temperament.
She crossed her Kibas in front of her chest, charging them with an lightning current so high that the air around the blades began to hum shrilly.
The first physical clash was an explosion of pure energy. Pakura lunged with a palm strike aimed directly at Ringo's chest, but Ringo blocked with the flat of one of her blades.
The contact between the Scorch Style and the lightning-charged metal generated a shockwave that cracked the ground beneath their feet.
Ringo took advantage of the proximity to launch an upward slash with her second sword, aiming for Pakura's throat.
The Suna heroine arched her body back acrobatically. While in mid-air, a portion of the now-enlarged sphere behind her detached, forming a small orb that shot toward Ringo's face.
The kiri kunoichi had to jerk her head violently to the side, feeling the heat of the orb sear her cheek as it passed, leaving a red line of parched skin.
"You're fast! There are very few people who can compare to me in speed when I have my lightning!" Ringo shouted, laughing with madness.
She activated her version of the Lightning Armor, reinforcing only her hands and feet to maximize her attack power and speed.
Her speed doubled instantly. To an ordinary observer, Ameyuri Ringo had become a yellow blur striking from all angles.
Pakura, however, did not depend on sight alone. The heat aura of the Solar crown acted as a thermal sensor; anything entering its radius was detected by the distortion of the air.
Still, the advantage of the Kibas was evident. Ringo looked more confident, unleashing thrusts at a speed that forced Pakura into constant evasive maneuvers.
Each of Ringo's slashes left a trail of ozone and static electricity that hindered Pakura's movement.
"What's the matter? Your chakra is fading!" Ringo mocked, observing the sphere that was now much smaller than before as she executed a lethal spin, repeatedly striking Pakura's guard.
Pakura orit her teeth, enduring the cuts and blows, feeling her muscles jolted by electricity but she trusted her heat.
That very heat was her best weapon. Despite her speed, Ringo was beginning to gasp. Dehydration was taking its toll on the Mist swordswoman; her skin was pale, and her lips were beginning to crack.
The combat turned into a duel of endurance and will. Pakura decided to change her strategy.
Instead of trying to hit Ringo directly, she began to release small orbs of scorch release into the area, making it even more difficult for Ameyuri to breath.
Ringo tried to break through the heat zone with a Raiton: Kiba no Senpū (Lightning Style: Fang Whirlwind), spinning like an electric tornado. The collision between the lightning tornado and Pakura's heat pressure created a destructive vortex that uprooted nearby trees and turned them into burning splinters. At the center of the vortex, the two kunoichi exchanged short-range blows.
Pakura spotted an opening when Ringo overextended a lateral attack. With a quick movement, Pakura caught Ringo's wrist. With her other hand, she placed a palm right near Ringo's stomach. The contact was devastating. Pakura's Shakuton instantly began to burn Ringo's stomach and wrist.
"AHHHHH!" Ringo let out a cry of pure agony as the skin on her forearm and stomach turned dark brown, losing all moisture in a second. Her skin died instantly, and she felt her insides begin to boil.
However, Ringo wasn't someone who let pain stop her. Biting her lip, she plunged the tip of her Kiba into Pakura's shoulder with her free hand. A massive discharge of volts surged through the Suna ninja's body, causing her muscles to contract violently and forcing her to let go of Ringo.
Both were sent flying in opposite directions by the force of the elemental repulsion.
Pakura crashed into a scorched tree, breaking through it and hitting the ground hard.
Ringo rolled across the earth, clutching her mummified arm and her stomach, cursing under her breath as she tried to focus her blurry vision.
Pakura rose from the ground, her shoulder smoking and her left arm hanging useless from electrical numbness. But her eyes still burned with the same intensity.
The Solar crown behind her had completely vanished, though thanks to that, Pakura felt she could breathe much better, taking advantage of the respite.
Ringo stood up slowly, using one of her swords for support. Her burned arm trembled, but she managed to wield both Kibas once more.
"This... this is what I was looking for," Ringo whispered with a bloody smile. "A fight where death breathes down our necks. Pakura, you are the best opponent I've ever had!"
"Save your praise for the end make them your last words," Pakura replied, her voice rasping from the dryness in her throat.
Pakura began her final charge. There were no words, only the sound of the air breaking.
Ringo responded by launching a series of electric projectiles that Pakura dodged with agile movements, almost as if she were dancing through the lightning.
When they were only a few meters apart, Pakura launched a large sphere of Shakuton not as big as the Solar Crown, but similar that she had managed to create.
Seeing the attack, Ringo didn't try to dodge. Instead, she drove her swords into the ground and released all her chakra into one last Raiton: Ikazuchi no Utage (Lightning Style: Lightning Feast).
Ameyuri's lightning, instead of traveling through the air, slithered across the earth like serpents until they struck the sphere of Scorch Style.
The clash of the two final techniques created a dome of energy that illuminated everything around them.
Inside the dome, time seemed to stand still. Pakura and Ringo were face to face, their jutsus struggling for dominance. The heat of the Scorch Style fought against the relentless lightning currents.
Finally, the accumulated energy could no longer hold and exploded outward. Both kunoichi were thrown back with incredible violence.
Pakura hit the ground with such force that it created a new crater, leaving her lying on her back, staring at the sky as it began to clear.
Ringo ended up embedded against the base of a giant tree, her uniform shredded and burns visible all over her body.
The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the sound of metal as one of the Kibas hit the ground after slipping from Ringo's hand.
With a superhuman effort, Ringo managed to sit up. She looked at her arm, then at Pakura, who was also trying to push herself up.
The swordswoman felt a void in her chakra reserves; she had nothing left to summon even a spark. She knew that if Pakura had one ounce more of strength, this would be her end.
But she also saw that Pakura was in the same situation; her skin was white from exhaustion and the lightning strikes that had hit her.
Ringo felt the fight would end both of them if they kept forcing their bodies. She had found an equal, and dying here, in this way,
seemed like a waste of such a perfect rivalry.
"Hey... Pakura," Ringo called out, her voice barely a whisper. "If we keep going... there will be nothing left of us but ashes. And I have plans for the future that don't involve being fertilizer for this forest," Ameyuri commented, loud enough for Pakura to hear.
Pakura managed to sit up, leaning on her trembling hands. She looked at Ringo and, despite being enemies, couldn't help but feel a strange connection. They had shared a level of power and danger that few kunoichi ever reached.
"You know we can have a rematch when we're both at 100%," Ringo continued, managing to stand up with a will of iron.
"Today... today you showed me that the Sand has strong ninjas. I recognize your strength, Pakura. Your nickname is well-earned."
Pakura exhaled, feeling as though her lungs were parched.
"The same to you. Those Kibas don't recognize just anyone as their wielder. We'll have that rematch soon."
Ringo smiled a tired but satisfied smile.
"Let's call this a draw. But don't get used to it. Next time, I'll cut you down before you can light your first orb."
"I'll be waiting," Pakura replied, keeping her gaze steady.
Ringo picked up her sword from the ground with slow movements, threw it over her shoulder, and with a final nod of respect, disappeared among the trees, using the last trace of her speed to retreat toward the lands of Kirigakure.
Pakura remained there, watching the direction Ameyuri had gone, feeling that this had been the hardest battle of her life.
However, another loud sound made her realize that the others were still in danger.
