Nora's POV
I move back from the door, my jaw tight with tension. The Grand Shadowhaven has never supported relationships between witches and vampires, but listening to how the Vampire Council plans to handle our kind sends chills down my spine. They have spent years pushing for assimilation, so commanding the death of anyone who is not a vampire feels like a drastic shift. Most witches blend seamlessly into normal society and appear completely human. The VC must harbor serious hatred for us if they are willing to risk vampires committing murder in broad daylight.
James has always been clear about his relationship with vampire laws. He follows them only because it benefits him to own businesses and property under his own name instead of using human intermediaries. He operates by his own rules and would never stop seeing me just because the VC demanded it, even if his feelings for me were not as intense as they are.
