Chapter 135 — The Beautiful Madness
Barry and Patty were still locked in their embrace, shaking slightly in each other's arms. The emotional weight of being separated in this hellish reflection of their world had taken its toll. Patty clutched him tightly like he might vanish again.
Dante stood nearby, cigarette hanging lazily from his lips, hands in his coat pockets. He tilted his head and broke the moment.
"Hey," he said casually. "Do you guys see that, or is it just me seeing Bloody Mary about to say 'Hi, Mom'?"
Barry and Patty turned slowly, following Dante's pointed finger.
There she stood—thin, pale, eyes far too wide. Her hair was a mess, knotted and greasy, hanging down over her face in jagged strands. Her arms twitched. Her mouth stretched into a manic, too-wide grin. She tilted her head slightly, like a curious dog.
Patty gasped, one hand flying to her mouth.
Barry instinctively stepped in front of her, protective. "Who the hell—"
Dante just smiled. "Hi, love."
The woman reacted instantly. Her smile stretched impossibly wider, and she waved both hands like a child at a parade.
"Oh great," Barry muttered. "He's flirting with her."
"I like her," Dante announced proudly.
The woman bolted toward him, running unnaturally fast. She skidded to a stop in front of Dante, her body twitching like it wasn't sure how to be still. Her grin didn't fade.
"You… you like me?" she croaked. "Like me. Me."
Her voice was high and broken, like a scratched vinyl record. Her words stuttered and doubled back on themselves.
Dante didn't flinch. He simply stepped closer and placed a finger beneath her chin.
"Well of course I do, love. Look at you. Big doll eyes, beautiful smile, messy hair—hell, you look like me when I wake up in the morning. What's your name?"
The woman's grin somehow widened. She began bouncing up and down excitedly.
Then she stopped.
"Me is Eva. Eva me is. Is me, Eva. Eva Eva McCulloch."
Barry froze. His mouth opened.
"Wait—what?"
Dante glanced at him, then looked back at Eva.
"You know this one?" he asked, half-joking.
Barry nodded slowly, disbelief creeping across his face. "Eva McCulloch… she's the co-founder of McCulloch Technologies. She disappeared six years ago, after the particle accelerator explosion."
Eva tilted her head at Barry and blinked fast, like she was trying to remember something.
Dante turned back to her gently. "Love… are you stuck here?"
Her smile cracked for a second. Her arms went limp.
"Me… stuck," she whispered. "I hate it. No one talks. No one speaks. No one listens. I scream. No one hears. No one helps. Help…"
Her voice faded off like static.
Dante's tone shifted slightly, the usual sarcasm giving way to quiet softness.
"Of course I'll help you, Eva."
She blinked up at him like a child seeing color for the first time.
"Can you tell us where the portal is?" he asked, keeping his voice calm.
Eva paused for a long moment. Then, slowly, she lifted her thin hand and pointed. The air shimmered a few feet away from them. It twisted, rippled—and then bloomed into a swirling, pulsing circle of white light.
Barry stepped forward, awe in his eyes. "She… opened it."
Patty clutched his hand tighter, scared to let go.
Dante turned and gave Eva a charming grin. "See? Flirting does get the job done sometimes."
Eva giggled, rocking side to side on her heels.
Barry shot him a half-smile. "Let's get out of here before something else finds us."
"Agreed," Patty whispered.
They stepped toward the portal—Barry and Patty first, fingers entwined like a lifeline. Dante followed, giving Eva a slight bow.
"You coming, darling?"
Eva looked between them, her smile faltering. For a second, she looked like she might cry.
"Can… can I come?" she asked quietly.
"Of course you can," Dante said without hesitation.
Eva stepped forward.
The portal shimmered again—and with that, the four of them disappeared from the Mirrorverse.
