Chapter 37 - The phone call

[Six Months Later - Rain's Office]

Rain was reviewing blueprints when his phone rang. Unknown number. He almost didn't answer, but something made him pick up.

"Hello?"

"Rain? This is Dr. Wanchai, Phayu's therapist."

Rain's blood ran cold. "Why are you calling me?"

"I know this is unexpected. But Phayu has been making significant progress. He's written you another letter, and he's asked if you'd consider visiting him. Just once. For closure."

"No." Rain's answer was immediate. "I got closure at his sentencing. I don't need more."

"I understand. But Rain, Phayu is genuinely changing. This isn't about winning you back—he knows that's impossible. It's about him taking full accountability, face to face."

"He can be accountable without me witnessing it."

"You're right. I just wanted to extend the offer. You have no obligation."

After hanging up, Rain sat shaking. The thought of seeing Phayu again terrified him.

But a small part wondered: would seeing him—seeing how broken he was—help Rain heal further?

[That Evening - With Prapai]

Rain told Prapai about the call. "Part of me wants to go. To see him and prove to myself I'm not scared anymore."

"And the other part?"

"Is terrified. What if seeing him triggers everything? What if I have a breakdown?"

Prapai held Rain's hands. "This is your decision. Whatever you choose, I support you. But Rain, you don't owe Phayu anything. Not forgiveness, not closure, not even acknowledgment."

"I know. But maybe I owe myself this? To face him and walk away stronger?"

"Then I'll go with you. Not in the room—Phayu needs to face you alone. But I'll be right outside."

Rain leaned into Prapai's embrace. "Let me think about it."

[Two Days Later - Therapy]

"I'm considering visiting Phayu in prison," Rain told Dr. Anong.

"Why?"

"To prove I've healed. To face him without fear."

"Rain, you don't need to prove anything. You've already shown remarkable strength." Dr. Anong leaned forward. "But if you decide to go, let's prepare. What do you want from this meeting?"

"Clarity. I want to see if he's really changed, or if it's manipulation."

"And if it's real change?"

"Then... I don't know. Maybe it helps me move forward? Knowing he understands what he did?"

"Okay. Let's role-play. I'll be Phayu. What do you say when you see him?"

They spent the session preparing Rain for every scenario—Phayu apologizing, Phayu manipulating, Phayu breaking down.

By the end, Rain felt ready.

"I'm going to do it," Rain decided. "Next week. Get it over with."
