Chapter 22 - Small victories

[Three Weeks After Rescue - University Campus]

Rain stood at the entrance of the architecture building, his heart pounding.

This was his first time back since the kidnapping.

"We can leave if you need to," Prapai said beside him.

"No. I need to do this." Rain took a breath and walked inside.

Students milled about between classes. A few glanced at Rain curiously—word had spread about his "absence." But no one approached.

Rain's advisor, Professor Sakchai, spotted him. "Rain! I'm so glad you're back. How are you feeling?"

"Better," Rain lied. "I wanted to ask about my thesis. Can I still present?"

"Of course. We extended your deadline given the circumstances. Whenever you're ready."

Rain felt relief. His work—his passion—could still exist separate from trauma.

He walked through the halls, reclaiming this space. By the time he left, he was exhausted but triumphant.

"I did it," Rain said as they drove back.

"You did," Prapai agreed, smiling. "I'm proud of you."

Those simple words made Rain's chest warm. When was the last time someone had been proud of him without conditions attached?

[Estate - Evening]

Rain was sketching in the gardens when Sky found him.

"You're drawing again," Sky observed, sitting beside him.

"Just doodles. I can't focus on real work yet."

"These aren't doodles." Sky looked at the sketch—a building with flowing lines, open spaces, lots of light. "This is beautiful."

Rain studied his own work. "It's what the penthouse should have been. Open instead of trapped. Light instead of dark."

"You're processing through design," Sky realized.

"It's the only way I know how." Rain set down his pencil. "Sky, can I ask you something? Why did you never give up on me? Even when I pushed you away?"

"Because you're my best friend. Because I knew the real you was still in there, just buried under his manipulation." Sky bumped Rain's shoulder. "Plus, you're stuck with me. I'm very persistent."

Rain laughed—the first real laugh in weeks. It felt strange, rusty, but good.

"There it is," Sky said softly. "I've missed your laugh."

"I've missed it too."

[Later - Rain's Room]

Rain was getting ready for bed when he noticed the ring—Phayu's "promise ring"—still in his jewelry box. He'd forgotten about it in the chaos.

Now he held it, feeling its weight, remembering when Phayu had placed it on his finger.

A symbol of ownership disguised as love.

Rain walked to the window, opened it, and threw the ring as far as he could into the night.

Gone. Like Phayu's hold on him. Like the person he'd been in that relationship.

Rain closed the window, feeling lighter.
