"And what did Gloria tell you?"
"To fight. To fight for myself. It doesn't matter if I win or lose. What matters is not giving up."
"She's wise."
"She's my mom. It's her job."
We fell silent. From the strip came the noise of the crowd, the shouts of the coaches, the clash of foils.
"Leo," Manny said, standing up. "Do you think I'll ever find someone who loves me for who I am? Not for my poems, not for my fencing. Just for... being me."
"I think you already found her," I said. "Her name is Gloria."
Manny smiled. It was a small smile, but it reached his eyes.
"You're right," he said. And put on his mask.
The Final
The final was intense. Manny's opponent, Caroline, was shorter than him but faster, more agile. Their foils clashed again and again, and the crowd held its breath with every attack.
Jay was on the edge of his seat, hands clenched into fists. Gloria was beside him with a calm her eyes didn't reflect. Phil filmed everything with an intensity bordering on obsessive. Luke had put down the potato chips. Haley had put down her phone.
And Alex was beside me, her fingers intertwined with mine, not letting go.
"He's going to win," she said, her voice confident.
"How do you know?"
"Because Manny is more stubborn than he looks. And Gloria taught him not to give up. Because..." She paused. "Because if he wins, my grandfather will have a reason to be proud. And my uncle Mitchell will have to face that he wasn't the only one who deserved that pride."
On the strip, Manny scored a point. Then another. Caroline counterattacked, but he moved with an elegance he hadn't shown before.
And then, in the final move, when everything seemed lost, Manny thrust his foil forward with a strength he didn't know he had.
The buzzer sounded. The crowd roared. Manny had won.
Jay jumped from his seat. Gloria ran to the strip. Phil shouted something I couldn't hear. Luke threw his potato chips in the air again. Haley applauded.
And in the bleachers, Mitchell and Claire looked at each other.
Later, I witnessed what seemed like a reconciliation. I didn't hear what they said. No one did. But I saw them embrace with an intensity I hadn't seen in them since I'd known them. I saw Mitchell cry, and Claire hold him, and Jay approach with an expression I couldn't tell was pride or shame.
"What happened?" Alex asked.
"I don't know. But I think your grandfather apologized. To your mom, or to your uncle. Or both."
"And is that enough?"
"For now, yes."
On the strip, Manny raised his trophy. Gloria hugged him. Jay hugged them both. And for a moment, the world was just that: a family that had found a reason to be together.
"You know?" Alex said, resting her head on my shoulder. "Sometimes I think my family is a disaster."
"They are."
"But they're our disaster. And I wouldn't change them for anything."
"Me neither."
She looked at me.
"Are you going to stay?" she asked.
"Always."
"Always is a long time."
"I know. But I promise to try."
And in the quiet of the afternoon, with Manny's trophy shining in his hands and the family gathered around him, I knew I didn't need anything more.
In the Car on the Way Home
Manny was asleep in the back seat, the trophy resting on his lap. Jay drove with a slowness that wasn't like him, as if he wanted to prolong the moment. Gloria sat beside him, her hand on his arm.
"Did you see?" Gloria said. "Our boy is a champion."
"He's a champion," Jay repeated.
"And you? Are you okay?"
Jay thought for a moment. "Mitchell told me he was proud of Manny. But that he also would have liked me to be proud of him when he was a kid."
"And what did you tell him?"
"I told him I was always proud. I just didn't know how to say it."
"And did he believe you?"
"No. But he hugged me anyway. And that's enough. For now."
Gloria smiled. It was a smile that hid nothing.
"You're going to be a good grandfather," she said.
"I'm already a good grandfather."
"You're going to be a good father too. Someday."
Jay didn't respond, but his hand found Gloria's on the seat and stayed there, not moving, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Night, on the Porch
The Dunphy house was calm when we arrived. Phil had gone to park the car. Claire was in the kitchen, preparing something to celebrate. Luke and Haley had disappeared into their rooms.
Alex and I were on the porch, like so many other nights, the streetlights casting shadows on the sidewalk.
"Gloria said Manny asked you for advice," she said without looking at me.
"He asked if he'd ever find someone who loved him for who he was."
"And what did you tell him?"
"I told him he already had. That her name was Gloria."
"That's very cheesy."
"I know."
"But it's true." She fell silent. "Do you think I'll find someone who loves me for who I am? Not for my grades, not for being the smart one. Just for... being me."
"I think you already have."
She looked at me.
"You?" she asked.
"Me," I replied.
She didn't say anything. But her hand found mine in the darkness and stayed there, not moving, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
And in the quiet of the night, with the streetlights glowing in the distance, I knew I didn't need anything more.
The system, which no longer recorded, recorded nothing.
But if it had, it would have noted:
Manny Delgado: Fencing champion.
Jay Pritchett: Proud for the first time without reservation.
Mitchell and Claire: Reconciled after twenty years.
Gloria Pritchett: Satisfied.
Alex Dunphy: Finding her place.
Leo Bennett: Finding his.
The path continues.
