One of the senior monks—a tall, imposing man with a calm but stern face—quickly stepped forward. This was Chiriku, the former Guardian Ninja and head monk of the Fire Temple. He looked between the completely unbothered Naruto and the heavily restrained Sora, taking in the sheer scale of the devastated forest around them before sighing heavily.
"Sora..." Chiriku rubbed his temples. "What were you thinking?"
With a flick of his wrist, Naruto cut the chakra flow to his jutsu. The water bindings immediately lost their shape, splashing harmlessly into the dirt.
Sora slowly got back to his feet, wincing as he rubbed his sore, red wrists. He kept his eyes glued to the ground, thoroughly defeated and avoiding everyone's gaze in his utter humiliation.
Naruto stretched his arms lazily over his head, his joints popping, before slipping both hands casually back into the pockets of his white jacket. Walking over toward Kakashi, he spoke in an almost bored tone.
"I honestly don't know what's wrong with kids like him."
He stopped and cast a sideways glance toward Chiriku. "Didn't you teach him any manners?"
Naruto pulled one hand from his pocket and tapped the gleaming metal of the Konoha forehead protector, securely attached to the shoulder of his white jacket. "The first thing every shinobi learns is to identify another village's headband before attacking. He should've stopped the moment he saw this."
Looking back at the gathered monks, Naruto continued his blunt lecture. "Seriously... what are you teaching him? He attacked another Leaf shinobi without asking a single question."
The older monks exchanged highly embarrassed looks, shifting uncomfortably on their feet. Nobody could really argue with Naruto's point; the boy was absolutely right. Sora had attacked a fully identified ally completely unprovoked.
Before the atmosphere could become even more suffocatingly awkward, Kakashi stepped in with his usual calm, laid-back demeanor. He gave a closed-eye smile and scratched the back of his head.
"Well... looks like this was just one very unfortunate misunderstanding."
Chiriku immediately nodded, immensely grateful for the famous Copy Ninja's attempt to diffuse the tension. He placed a heavy hand on Sora's shoulder, giving it a stern squeeze.
Sora visibly gritted his teeth. He lowered his head, and although he was clearly frustrated and embarrassed, he quietly muttered an apology to the blonde shinobi who had just effortlessly tossed him around.
Naruto simply waved a hand dismissively. "Just think before attacking next time. It'll save both of us a lot of trouble."
With the misunderstanding formally settled, the tension in the air finally broke, and the entire group made their way back to the Fire Temple.
Once inside the temple's protective walls, Kakashi and Yamato split off, meeting privately with Chiriku in his chambers to gather detailed information about the grave robberies and the missing Guardian Shinobi remains.
Meanwhile, Naruto, Sakura, and Sai remained outside in the main temple courtyard. The peaceful, incense-filled atmosphere contrasted sharply with the chaotic battle that had taken place just an hour prior.
Across the expansive courtyard, several monks were diligently practicing their morning routines, running through synchronized taijutsu katas and fluid staff techniques.
Watching them from the sidelines, Sakura smiled brightly. "Their teamwork is actually really impressive," she noted, trying to start a conversation.
Neither Naruto nor Sai answered her.
Sai was sitting quietly beneath the shade of a large cherry blossom tree, entirely absorbed in sketching the practicing monks into one of his black notebooks.
High above them, Naruto sat cross-legged on a thick tree branch. His eyes were closed, completely ignoring the noise of the courtyard as he silently meditated, extending his vast sensory field for miles across the surrounding forests to ensure no other hostile chakra signatures were approaching.
As the afternoon dragged on, Naruto cracked an eye open to watch the courtyard below. Sora was pacing around the training grounds, repeatedly trying to challenge various senior monks to a spar. And every single time, the monks politely, but firmly, refused him.
With every rejection, Sora's frustration grew more obvious, his fists clenching and his scowl deepening.
Naruto simply closed his eyes again, choosing not to interfere. He had already learned enough about Sora today to understand his core issue; the kid felt alienated and angry. But this wasn't something physical strength or a spar was going to solve.
Several hours later, Kakashi and Yamato finally emerged from the main hall alongside Chiriku. Kakashi waved his team over, gathering them in the center of the courtyard.
"We've learned everything we can here," Kakashi briefed them, his visible eye serious. "Tomorrow morning, we'll return to Konoha and report everything directly to Lady Tsunade."
The team nodded in unison.
That night, Team Kakashi set up a strict rotation, patrolling the perimeter of the Fire Temple in case the grave robbers decided to return for another strike. Fortunately, the night passed peacefully, and nothing unusual happened.
The next morning, the sun broke brightly over the temple walls. Just as Team Kakashi was strapping on their gear and preparing to leave, Chiriku approached them.
Beside the head monk stood Sora, silently carrying a packed canvas travel backpack over one shoulder.
Chiriku stopped before the Leaf shinobi and bowed slightly. "I have a favor to ask."
Kakashi looked at him, his lone eye evaluating the teenager beside the monk. "What is it?"
Chiriku placed a gentle hand on Sora's shoulder. "I'd like you to take Sora back to Konoha."
Everyone paused, blinking in surprise. Sakura and Yamato exchanged a look, their expressions clearly asking the exact same question: Why?
Chiriku smiled awkwardly, anticipating the confusion. "He witnessed several important events connected to this investigation before you arrived. It would be best if he personally reported everything to Lady Tsunade."
Up on his feet, Naruto immediately realized that this was only half the truth. It was a flimsy excuse. Looking at the way the other monks treated the boy, it was obvious—Chiriku simply wanted Sora to leave the temple for a while, to experience the outside world and maybe find a place where he wasn't treated like a ticking time bomb.
Kakashi, ever perceptive, understood the underlying motive just as quickly. After a brief silence, the Jonin captain gave a single nod.
"Very well," Kakashi agreed easily. "He'll travel with us."
Sora adjusted the strap of his backpack, avoiding eye contact with Naruto as he fell into line behind the Leaf shinobi. Without another word, Team Kakashi and their newest temporary companion departed the Fire Temple, beginning the long journey back toward Konoha.
What none of them knew, however, was that deep within the borders of the Land of Fire, the grave robbers they were seeking were already making their next move.
The journey back to Konohagakure passed without any hostile encounters, but the psychological tension within the group was palpable. For most of the trip, Sakura repeatedly attempted to strike up a conversation with Sora, trying to understand the aggressive teenager. Her efforts were met with cold shoulders; Sora either brushed her off entirely or offered cryptic, nonsensical replies that left her frustrated.
However, through his bitter rants, the team managed to glean a critical piece of information. Sora openly admitted that his singular drive was to become powerful enough to avenge his father, who had been killed years ago by the Fire Temple's own Guardian Shinobi. He made no effort to hide his burning hatred for the former protectors of the Land of Fire. While nobody openly challenged him on it, every member of Team Kakashi silently noted the dangerous grudge the boy was harboring.
Upon arriving in Konoha, the group went straight to the Hokage's office to deliver their official debriefing. Standing before Tsunade, Sora recounted exactly what he had witnessed prior to the team's arrival.
"The tombs were literally shifting and rising out of the earth," Sora explained, his hands clenched tightly. "Whoever did it was definitely using a high-level Earth Style jutsu."
"And they didn't waste any time searching," Kakashi added, picking up the thread. "According to Sora's account, the thieves bypassed the outer defenses completely. It looks like they already knew the exact layout of the hidden vaults."
Tsunade's eyes narrowed to dangerous slits at that detail. Perfect inside knowledge of restricted Land of Fire military layouts immediately pointed to a leak within the village's own dark underbelly. Her mind instantly went to one person: Danzo Shimura.
Maintaining her composure, Tsunade waited until the formal report concluded. Once the room cleared out slightly, she quietly pulled an ANBU investigator aside, ordering a discrete, high-priority surveillance operation on Danzo and his Root operatives. If the old war hawk was playing a double game with the Land of Fire's sacred relics, she wanted the proof immediately so they could eliminate the threat before it escalated.
Turning back to Team Kakashi, Tsunade shattered any hopes they had of a quick post-mission rest.
"If you think your job is done, think again," Tsunade declared, planting her hands firmly on her desk. "The perpetrators are moving fast. If they possess the full layout, the remaining tombs are in immediate danger of being pillaged. You need to head right back out into the field before the next grave is robbed."
Naruto suppressed a sigh, shifting his posture as he realized his relaxation week was officially dead and buried.
"However, you won't be tracking them alone this time," Tsunade continued, her tone shifting to one of tactical finality. "I am deploying Team Asuma to provide direct combat and tracking support for this leg of the mission."
Kakashi nodded in approval. The addition was a massive tactical advantage. As a former member of the Twelve Guardian Shinobi himself, Asuma Sarutobi knew the exact layout, hidden seals, and historical defense mechanisms of the Fire Temple better than anyone else in Konoha. With both teams operating together, they finally had the specialized expertise needed to predict exactly where the grave robbers would strike next.
The combined forces of Team Kakashi and Team Asuma departed Konoha early the next morning. With no immediate time limit hanging over their heads, the joint squad moved at a normal, steady pace through the vibrant forests of the Land of Fire.
During the journey, Asuma naturally gravitated toward Sora. Over the course of the day, Asuma struck up a couple of conversations with the bitter teenager. Upon learning that Sora was the son of a former Twelve Guardian Ninja, a profound sense of melancholy and responsibility settled over the bearded Jonin. Recognizing the familiar anger and isolation in the boy's eyes, Asuma quickly began to develop a soft spot for him, seeing a troubled kid who desperately needed guidance rather than a threat.
However, the biggest development during the trip was unfolding at the front of the formation between Naruto and Ino.
Taking advantage of the relaxed travel pace, Ino seamlessly fell into step beside Naruto. She eagerly asked him for pointers on the new jutsu techniques he had demonstrated to her a few days prior. Rather than his usual boisterous behavior, Naruto slipped into a calm, focused teaching mode. For hours, they jumped from branch to branch as Naruto broke down complex chakra manipulation concepts in deep detail, explaining how to properly mold elemental chakra and balance it with physical stamina. He even gave her highly specific, practical taijutsu pointers to improve her close-quarters evasion. Ino listened intently, her respect and admiration for Naruto's undeniable growth shining clearly in her eyes.
The journey passed quickly, and before long, the grand gates of the Fire Temple came into view.
Anticipating their arrival, the temple monks had already prepared comfortable guest quarters for the Konoha shinobi. Exhausted from the long trip and the mental strain of the ongoing investigation, the teams retired to their rooms to rest up for the inevitable conflict.
The peace didn't last.
Deep into the night, while the temple was shrouded in darkness, Naruto's eyes snapped open in his dark guest room. His sensory field, running passively even while he rested, flared violently. Multiple foreign, highly potent chakra signatures had just breached the outer perimeter.
Naruto was on his feet instantly. He slid open the shoji door to the hallway, marched directly to the adjacent room, and banged on the wood.
"Wake up!" Naruto called out sharply. "They are here!"
The warning rippled through the compound in seconds. By the time Naruto rushed out into the main courtyard, the Fire Temple guard knights, the monks, and the rest of the Konoha shinobi were already pouring out of their quarters.
Standing on the temple steps, they looked out toward the distant, moonlit opening of the valley. Through the tree line, they could clearly see massive shapes—the stolen coffins of the Guardian Ninjas—gliding unnaturally fast across the terrain, carried by an unknown jutsu.
Kakashi and Asuma instantly took command, their voices cutting through the chaos.
"Quickly, move out!" Asuma ordered, drawing his trench knives.
"Separate!" Kakashi commanded. "Make team groups and pursue the targets!"
But Naruto hadn't even waited for the order. The moment he had verified the enemy's coordinates, he had vanished in a blur of pure speed, rocketing into the forest ahead of everyone else.
Following his lead, the Konoha shinobi scattered into the dark woods, officially engaging the grave robbers.
