Chapter 12 - The Trolls of the Upper Mantle

The ground trembled before Azraeth saw a single one of them.

They came from everywhere at once — massive shapes stepping out from behind towering basalt pillars, others hauling themselves free of lava-heated fissures with a wet, grinding hiss of steam, more dropping from rocky ledges high above the cavern floor to land hard enough to crack stone beneath them. Within moments, he stood at the center of a slowly closing ring of them, each one easily four meters tall, hide dark and cracked like cooling basalt, molten veins pulsing faint orange beneath skin that never quite stopped smoking. Their small, ember-bright eyes tracked him with none of Krax's calculation — only patient, unhurried hunger, the certainty of things that had never once needed to hurry toward a kill.

The nearest one didn't wait for the others. It swung a fist the size of a boulder, and the ground where Azraeth had stood erupted into rubble the instant he cleared it.

Blue Colored Fire — Fire Booster

Flame roared around his feet and he tore sideways as a second troll's overhand slam came down where he'd have landed, the impact sending a shockwave through the cavern floor that staggered him mid-stride. A third hurled a chunk of torn basalt the size of a boulder; he ducked beneath it, felt it pass close enough to stir his hair, and answered the troll behind him with a burning knee that cracked ribs like green wood.

They didn't fight with Krax's speed or cunning — they simply kept coming, relentless and overwhelming, using their sheer numbers to deny him any room to breathe. A troll to his left ripped a pillar from the ground entirely and swung it like a club; Azraeth ducked under the arc.

Blue Colored Fire — Fire Dash

Ember trails carried him clear as the pillar shattered against another troll's shoulder instead, and he used the opening to close distance rather than retreat, driving a burning fist into an exposed throat before the creature could recover its balance. Molten blood hissed where his flame met flesh, blue soulfire burning hotter than the lava itself.

A troll's palm slammed into the ground beside him, cracking the floor and spraying magma in a wide arc; Fire Protection absorbed the worst of the splash before it could reach him, and he answered by driving flame straight into the creature's exposed forearm, corroding through hide reinforced by ages of heat.

Blue Colored Fire — Mud Lava

He dropped low and drove both palms into the stone, and the ground beneath three approaching trolls turned suddenly, violently unstable, boiling mud swallowing their footing and buying him precious seconds to reposition. He used them fully, weaving between two more trolls converging from either flank, catching a punch on a raised forearm that numbed his whole arm to the shoulder despite Heat Thickness dulling the worst of it.

A dozen more trolls pressed in from every side, and Azraeth realized numbers alone would eventually grind him down if he kept meeting them one at a time.

Blue Colored Fire — Sun Flare

A wide wave of celestial heat tore across the cavern, scorching a dozen trolls at once and forcing the entire ring to stagger back from the light. He didn't let the opening go to waste, closing the distance while they were still blinded, driving strike after strike into exposed joints and throats before their massive frames could recover.

When the survivors finally regrouped into one last desperate wall, Azraeth gathered everything into a single point between his palms.

Blue Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

A compressed sphere of stellar energy tore across the cavern at blinding speed, punching cleanly through six trolls in a single unbroken line before burying itself in the far wall. The last handful scattered rather than face what remained of him, and he ended each one methodically, exhaustion finally beginning to show in every motion by the time the cavern fell silent.

Floor twenty-two brought a hundred and ten trolls, and Azraeth met them with cleaner economy than the fight before — footwork tighter, strikes landing exactly where he intended rather than where luck placed them, the battle ending faster despite the greater numbers. He no longer wasted motion dodging blows that could simply be absorbed; Heat Thickness took the weight of glancing strikes he once would have rolled clear of entirely, letting him stay closer to his targets and end fights sooner.

Floor twenty-three's hundred and fifteen coordinated better, flanking in disciplined pairs rather than a single mob, but Azraeth had already learned to read it. He drove a troll backward into a cluster of its own kind, letting their combined weight do half his work for him as two more stumbled trying to avoid crushing their ally, then finished the tangle with a single sweeping burst of flame that caught all three before they could untangle themselves.

Floor twenty-four's hundred and twenty turned the cavern into ruin — lava rivers overflowing beneath the fight's own violence, entire basalt pillars collapsing under strikes that missed their mark, ash thick enough to choke the light from his own flame. A troll's wild swing shattered a support column entirely, half the ceiling groaning ominously overhead, and Azraeth used the chaos rather than fighting against it, weaving fire dashes between falling debris that did more damage to the trolls chasing him than his own strikes managed alone. He pushed through it anyway, exhaustion burning in every limb, refusing to slow even as the battlefield itself seemed determined to bury him beneath its own wreckage.

---

Floor twenty-five's hundred and twenty-five trolls emerged the same way all the rest had — pillars, fissures, ledges — but Azraeth felt the difference the instant they closed in. This wasn't a pack anymore. It was a wall of muscle and heat with no visible end to it.

Blue Colored Fire — Fire Booster

He tore through the first line before it fully formed, weaving fire directly into every strike, refusing to let a single exchange cost him more than it earned. A troll's fist came down hard enough to crater stone a hand's width from his skull; he answered from beneath its guard with a burning uppercut that staggered it long enough to finish with a second strike through its throat. Two more trolls closed from either side, and rather than choose one, he dropped flat, letting their crushing blows meet each other overhead in a shower of shattered knuckle and bone.

Blue Colored Fire — Fire Protection

The shield held through three consecutive blows that would have shattered bone otherwise, buying him the half-second he needed to reposition against a cluster trying to box him against a collapsing pillar. He used the pillar's own fall as cover, Fire Dash carrying him clear the instant before it crushed two trolls beneath its weight entirely on its own. A troll wrenched an entire section of molten rock from the nearest river and hurled it toward him; he met it head-on with a burning palm instead of dodging, flame and stone exploding together in a spray of embers that scattered the trolls closing in behind it.

Blue Colored Fire — Mud Lava

He carved a wide circle of unstable, boiling ground beneath an entire flank of trolls, watching four of them stumble at once, and used their collective loss of footing to end two before they'd fully recovered their balance. By the fight's later stretch, his movements had slowed with genuine exhaustion, each strike costing more than the one before it, blue soulfire burning thinner around his fists than it had an hour earlier. A stray blow caught his side hard enough to crack ribs; without breaking rhythm, he pressed a burning palm to the wound.

Blue Colored Fire — Lava Heal

The bone knit shut mid-motion, and he pushed forward through sheer will as much as skill, driving the last cluster into a final, desperate stand.

Blue Colored Fire — Stellar Pull

A compressed sphere tore through the remaining wall of trolls in a single decisive line, and he finished what survived it with a wide sweep of thermal light that left nothing standing in the ash and ruin.

Azraeth stood amid the wreckage, breathing slow and deliberate, forcing his heartbeat back under control. He checked the cavern around him out of habit more than necessity, Heat Sense sweeping the ruined stone for anything still stirring, and found only silence and settling ash. A shallow cut along his forearm sealed shut beneath one last press of blue flame before he allowed himself to move on, legs still heavy from a fight that had taken more out of him than any single troll ever could have alone.

He descended.

---

The next floor greeted him with ancient stone bridges suspended high above lakes of churning magma, the air thick with sulfur and heat radiating up from below in visible waves. Unlike the open cavern floors above, this one forced him onto narrow spans of ancient stone with nothing beneath but molten rock in every direction.

He'd barely crossed the first span when the magma erupted.

Something vast climbed free of the molten river beneath him, and in the same instant, glowing cracks split wide across the cavern walls on every side, abandoned forge entrances carved deep into the volcanic rock releasing shapes far larger than anything he'd faced on the floor above. Azraeth turned, Heat Sense flaring in every direction at once, and found himself surrounded by silhouettes emerging faster than he could count them, the narrow bridge beneath his feet suddenly feeling far too small for whatever was about to happen next.
