Nora's fever broke completely just after noon.
The doctor came in to check her vitals and announced it with satisfaction. Her oxygen levels were stable. The antibiotics were doing what they were meant to do.
She would need to remain through tomorrow, probably the day after so they could be sure the antibiotics would work completely, ruling out any chance of a lingering infection, but the worst of it was behind her.
Dionne had closed her eyes briefly when he said it. For a second, head dropped forward and she looked like she was going to start crying. The sight of that made my stomach churn slightly for some reason.
By mid-afternoon Nora had graduated from the shallow, effortful breathing that had knotted something in my chest when I first saw her to a more relaxed. The colors were back to her face and by the time she woke up it was hard to believe that the baby had been dying just a couple hours ago.
