Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Despair

Su Chen didn't start climbing immediately, after all, he was no expert in freehand climbing.

After walking a circle around his bed, Su Chen suddenly made a discovery: a corner of his quilt was actually hanging down to the floor.

This new discovery truly gave Su Chen a huge surprise.

But thinking about it, it must have been related to his usual restless sleeping habit of kicking the quilt. He never imagined that one day his bad habit would bring him such a great surprise.

However, Su Chen didn't immediately start climbing up via the quilt corner. Instead, he first went under the bed. The space above and below Su Chen's bed were completely two different worlds.

Although the area on top of Su Chen's bed was messy, it only contained some bedding and clothes. But the space under the bed was a whole other world.

Of course, it wasn't a garbage dump; after all, it was his own home. Su Chen still had some scruples and wouldn't go that far.

Under his bed, he had stashed quite a few snacks and some beer. This was one of Su Chen's few hobbies. As for why he kept them under the bed, Su Qingwan had asked Su Chen before.

Su Chen's answer at the time was: "If I put all these snacks out, your big brother's room would completely turn into a pigsty."

That had made Su Qingwan laugh heartily back then, but she accepted Su Chen's explanation.

Having lived together for so many years, she also knew that Su Chen was an easy-going person who often placed things casually to the side. Of course, actual trash would still go where it belonged.

And Su Chen's purpose for going under the bed was those snacks he had hidden away.

He vaguely remembered that last night he seemed to have casually taken out a bag of snacks, eaten a few bites, and then put it back under the bed. Whether any had spilled out, Su Chen really didn't know. If some had spilled out, then his current hungry stomach could be filled.

Before even entering deep under the bed, Su Chen had already seen that immensely large, crooked snack bag lying on its side, with some scattered snacks not far away.

Su Chen immediately became excited, scampered over gleefully, directly pounced on a half-piece of potato chip, and opened his mouth to gnaw on it.

This piece of potato chip was as big as a basketball court to the current Su Chen. This one bag, for the present Su Chen, could last him a whole year without any problem.

Soon, Su Chen had wolfed down a lot, but the amount of potato chips didn't seem significantly reduced. To a normal person, it would still look the same size. But Su Chen knew that his current appetite seemed to have increased many times over compared to before.

Proportionally speaking, what he had just eaten in a few minutes would have taken him three days to finish before.

Could it be that his appetite had relatively increased more than tenfold? Su Chen didn't know whether this was good or bad, and he didn't want to think about it.

He was full, but his mouth was dry and he wanted water. However, there was no water under the bed. There was beer, which could also quench thirst, but that can was something Su Chen had no way to open.

Abandoning that idea directly, Su Chen jumped down from the potato chip, casually broke off a few pieces of debris to serve as rations for the journey. Unfortunately, he had nowhere to put them, so he could only place these bits of debris at the foot of the bed for easier access later.

With strength restored, Su Chen was full of drive. He looked at the quilt corner resting on the floor, circled around it, found a suitable angle, and directly began to climb. Su Chen's current physical condition had relatively improved a lot, and his strength was relatively much greater-here, 'relatively' refers to proportion.

So climbing didn't take much effort. But when Su Chen climbed onto the bed, he knew that finding the thing he needed wouldn't be so easy.

Su Chen's bed was open and flat. Except for this corner covered by the quilt, many areas could be seen clearly just by standing a little higher. Those places naturally didn't require careful searching, so he only needed to search under the quilt.

He burrowed back under the quilt. This quilt had been roughed up by Su Qingwan in the morning and had long lost any semblance of small hillocks.

Walking into the space under the quilt, it was more like an underground cavern. Su Chen searched very carefully, checking bit by bit to see if there was any strange object.

Time passed minute by second; this was not a simple task.

Soon, the time reached the afternoon. Su Chen's room remained without any movement, and the extremely small Su Chen still persevered in searching for the thing he felt might exist.

The afternoon wasn't long. When the sun began to use its fiery red rays to clock out for the day, Su Chen finally walked out from under the quilt, dejected.

He had found nothing. Things were not as simple as he had imagined. There was no strange object on his bed that he thought might have shrunk him.

Su Chen felt all the strength in his body instantly drain away. His whole person fell backward.

Lying on this ground full of holes and textures, Su Chen actually had some guesses in his heart, but he had been unwilling to believe them.

From waking up in the morning and discovering he had shrunk, to Su Qingwan bursting into his room and finding him gone.

That girl was puzzled for a while before directly leaving to wash up. Su Chen had felt some doubts then, but just hadn't thought about it carefully. But just now, he suddenly realized that his shrinking might not be so simple.

Logically, even if he had shrunk and was stark naked, then since this bed was still so big, his clothes shouldn't have shrunk either. The thing that shrunk him might only change the size of living organisms.

But why hadn't either he or Su Qingwan seen his clothes?

Su Chen usually slept wearing a tank top and sleep pants, precisely to prevent Su Qingwan from barging into his room and creating an awkward situation.

Ever since Su Qingwan was fourteen years old, Su Chen had started doing this. That girl Su Qingwan was very clingy, especially towards him, and Su Chen also enjoyed this state, but he had to pay attention to necessary boundaries.

But there were no clothes at all on this bed. What exactly was going on?

Perhaps Su Qingwan had also realized this problem. Because even if Su Chen went out, he would usually just toss his pajamas on the bed, not put them away properly. That's why that girl had been so puzzled.

So now, the only possibility was that his clothes had either shrunk along with him, or directly disappeared. Although this was very illogical, when other possibilities didn't work, this was the only explanation.

Thus, if the clothes shrank but the quilt didn't, it indicated that the thing was attached to his body. But now, Su Chen had found nothing.

Only two possibilities remained. One was that the thing had disappeared. The other was that the thing had also shrunk.

If the thing had really shrunk and not disappeared, then with Su Qingwan's pounce this morning, the thing either fell deep into the bed or landed on Su Qingwan herself and was taken away by her.

And Su Qingwan went to school today... the number of places she would pass through, Su Chen simply couldn't imagine.

In either case, the result for Su Chen was the same: it was fundamentally impossible for him to rely on that possibly existing thing to change back.

When the heart sinks to the bottom, the world returns to silence, and all that remains is despair.
