Chapter 13 - welcome to dragon hotel

Evening slowly wrapped Dragon Hotel in a soft golden glow. Inside their room on the third floor, Vikram closed his laptop and stretched his arms. The day had been quiet, almost too quiet. After hours of rest and light discussion about future plans, he felt the need to step outside, to breathe air that did not smell of polished wood and expensive perfume.

Sofia was already ready, standing near the mirror, adjusting her hair.

"Let's go out," she said. "I want to see Hong Kong at night."

Vikram smiled. "Good idea. Staying inside this hotel all evening feels wrong."

They left the room and took the elevator down. The soft music inside the lift played calmly, but Vikram's mind was alert. Since arriving, he had felt an odd awareness, as if the hotel itself was quietly observing him. He brushed the thought aside. New places always felt strange at first.

As the elevator doors opened into the reception area, the lobby appeared livelier than before. Guests moved in and out, some dressed formally, others casually, all carrying the air of people used to luxury. The staff moved smoothly, offering help with effortless smiles.

As Vikram and Sofia walked toward the exit, a woman standing near the reception desk caught their attention. She had sharp, intelligent eyes and a confident posture. Her uniform was perfectly pressed, and her smile appeared natural, almost practiced. She looked directly at them and stepped forward.

"Good evening," she said warmly. "You must be Mr. Vikram and Miss Sofia."

"Yes," Vikram replied politely. "That's us."

"I'm Maria," she said, extending her hand first to Vikram and then to Sofia. "I work here at Dragon Hotel."

"Nice to meet you," Sofia said, returning the smile.

Maria's smile widened slightly, as if she genuinely enjoyed meeting them. "I hope you're finding your stay comfortable so far."

"It's been very good," Vikram answered. "The hotel is impressive."

Maria nodded enthusiastically. "Dragon Hotel is not just impressive," she said with a hint of pride. "It's the best hotel in Hong Kong."

She gestured lightly around the lobby as if inviting them to admire it more closely.

"Once someone comes here," Maria continued, "they always come back. Every guest remembers Dragon Hotel."

The way she said it made the words sound less like marketing and more like a promise.

Sofia glanced around, visibly impressed. "Is it really that beautiful?" she asked. "Everyone speaks about it with so much admiration."

Maria laughed softly. "Beautiful is only one word for it. This hotel has history, reputation, and a certain… charm. People feel special here."

She began talking about the hotel with great enthusiasm. She spoke of how Dragon Hotel had hosted filmmakers, businessmen, writers, and artists from all over the world. She praised the management, mentioning how the manager, Daniel, ensured everything ran smoothly. She complimented the staff, calling them dedicated and loyal.

As Maria spoke, some of the staff nearby smiled subtly, clearly pleased by her words. Her praise sounded sincere, and it painted Dragon Hotel as a place beyond ordinary luxury.

Sofia listened carefully, her curiosity growing. "It really does feel different," she said. "There's something about this place."

Maria nodded quickly. "Exactly. That's what guests always say. Dragon Hotel has an atmosphere you won't find anywhere else."

Vikram listened quietly, observing Maria more than her words. She spoke with confidence, yet there was something controlled about her tone, as if she chose every word carefully. She seemed to love the hotel, perhaps a little too much.

"We were just heading out for a walk," Vikram said eventually. "Maybe explore nearby."

"That's a wonderful idea," Maria replied. "Hong Kong at night is magical. But don't stay out too late. Dragon Hotel feels best when you return to it."

The comment was said casually, but it lingered in Vikram's mind.

"Thank you, Maria," Sofia said. "It was nice meeting you."

"The pleasure is mine," Maria replied. "Enjoy your evening."

As Vikram and Sofia stepped outside, the city greeted them with lights, sounds, and movement. Neon signs reflected on wet roads, cars moved like flowing streams, and distant voices blended into the rhythm of the city. Sofia looked around with excitement, while Vikram felt alert, taking in every detail.

They walked slowly, talking about simple things. Sofia spoke about how different Hong Kong felt compared to England. Vikram nodded, agreeing, but his thoughts kept drifting back to the hotel lobby and Maria's words.

"Did you notice," Sofia said suddenly, "how proud she sounded?"

"Yes," Vikram replied. "Almost like Dragon Hotel isn't just her workplace. It's part of her identity."

Sofia smiled. "Maybe she just loves her job."

"Maybe," Vikram said, though he wasn't fully convinced.

After spending some time exploring nearby streets and having a light dinner, they returned to the hotel. The lobby was quieter now, the evening rush fading into calm. Soft lighting gave the space a peaceful appearance.

As they walked in, Vikram instinctively glanced toward the reception desk. Maria was no longer there. Another staff member stood in her place, focused on paperwork.

They returned to their room, and Sofia quickly relaxed, sitting near the window. Vikram stood for a moment, looking out at the city below. From this height, Hong Kong appeared endless, alive, and distant all at once.

Later that night, as Sofia fell asleep, Vikram remained awake. Maria's words echoed in his mind. "Once someone comes here, they always come back."

He didn't know why the sentence unsettled him. Perhaps it was the way she had said it, or perhaps it was his own imagination feeding on the strange energy of the place.

Before finally sleeping, Vikram made a silent decision. He would observe everything carefully. Dragon Hotel was beautiful, impressive, and welcoming. But beneath its polished surface, he sensed there were stories hidden in its walls.

And writers, whether they wanted to or not, were always drawn to hidden stories.
