Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Encounter

When MDR opened the unit door, a pale-faced old man, mouth agape in a grotesque gape, lunged toward her at a speed that didn't match his age.

Black, foul-smelling saliva dripped from the corners of his mouth. His jaw was torn wide to the ears—completely inhuman.

His yellow-brown teeth were crooked, and his twisted throat was visible.

"Back off, old man! You're not Miss MDR's type!"

MDR didn't shoot. She delivered a hard kick to the old man's abdomen, then stomped on his head with her black military boots.

Pff!

The old man's head was crushed like a watermelon.

At the same time, Lux and HK416 rushed out of the unit door.

Seeing the grayish-red brain matter splattered across the ground, Lux felt a wave of nausea.

But after two days of enduring the stench to test whether the virus spread through the air, he forced down his gag reflex.

"One down! Commander, are you okay? You look pale."

"I'm fine. Let's move."

Scanning the surroundings, the only zombie left was the one MDR had killed. The others had likely been drawn away by the car alarm.

"Let's go! Miss MDR will show off her skills today! Rear guard, 416!"

Saying that, MDR sprinted toward the street where the vehicles were parked. Lux quickly followed and reached the car, tapping the door to store it in the system's storage space.

He then casually converted another car without keys into resource points.

When he heard the ding sound and that the old used sedan was worth two thousand resource points, a twinge of greed surged. He almost considered converting all intact cars in the area into points.

But a distant explosion snapped him back to reality.

MDR and HK416 were waiting anxiously for him.

"Quick, that way."

Without wasting words, Lux pointed with his right hand, issuing a movement command.

MDR ran ahead while keeping about five meters between them. This seemed intentional, to match Lux's stamina.

HK416 stayed close behind Lux, occasionally checking for pursuers.

At the entrance of the complex, a horde of zombies surged toward them, arms flailing.

"Crap."

Lux felt his scalp tighten. The last car explosion had drawn zombies from the streets into the complex. He hadn't accounted for this.

"Commander, what do we do?"

"What else? Eliminate them on the spot. About twenty of them. If we're lucky, we survive. HK, use the grenade. MDR, handle any dangerous stragglers."

Click!

HK416 jumped to Lux's side, and a grenade flew into the zombie crowd.

Thump!

Blood geysers erupted, limbs flying.

The blast made Lux's ears ring and left him dizzy.

MDR, closer to the front, opened fire rapidly.

The crisp gunfire cracked like firecrackers.

After two minutes, Lux hadn't fully recovered when a hand grabbed his arm and pulled him across the bloody, limb-strewn area toward safety.

They ran for almost five minutes before entering the phone store. The hand finally released him, and the heavy metal shutter was pulled down.

Lux collapsed onto the floor, gasping.

After catching his breath, he touched each phone in the glass counters, storing them in the system. The boxes of power banks, cables, and chargers under the counter were also stored.

These factory-made electronic parts were non-renewable resources, so stockpiling them was sensible.
