Chapter 4 - CHAPTER FOUR: The Calculus of God

[Narrative Summary]

Rena is captured not by soldiers, but by Darkford's personal guard. She is brought to the Spire.

This is the pivotal dialogue scene, reminiscent of the confrontation in Blade Runner or The Watchmen. Darkford and Rena—former colleagues, perhaps former lovers—debate the fate of the species.

Rena: Argues for the messy beauty of freedom and the right of the weak to survive. She calls him a monster.

Darkford: Argues that humanity is already dead; they just haven't fallen over yet. He shows her his plan: "The Ark." A series of floating cities powered by the Rift. "I cannot save everyone, Rena. But I can save the best of us. I can save the species, even if I have to prune the tree."

He reveals he didn't kill her because he needs her bio-metric key (as the original co-architect) to fully unlock the final stage of the energy harvest.
