🔥 Chapter 29 — Shadows and Defenses

Night cloaked the valley, and the faint glow of the hidden hub's runes pulsed like a heartbeat through the darkness. Kael and Rhyne moved silently along the ridge, Ember coiled tightly around Kael, threads of fire probing the shadows for traps.

Rhyne whispered, eyes scanning the forest below. "The wards here are subtle… almost invisible. Whoever set them up doesn't want anyone approaching undetected."

Kael's fingers tingled as he extended the Ember, letting it flow like liquid fire over the terrain. "The Ember can sense the magical currents and reveal hidden patterns. Follow it closely, and we can navigate without triggering alarms."

They slipped between trees and rocks, Ember pulses revealing faint sigils etched into stones and roots. Each ward they passed whispered of careful planning—the King had learned from the previous hubs, leaving nothing unprotected.

Suddenly, a ripple of green energy arced through the forest, illuminating a trio of magical sentinels. Cloaked figures with pulsing auras moved silently, their eyes glowing faintly as they patrolled the perimeter.

Rhyne hissed, drawing his sigil blade. "They've set patrols inside the forest. If we engage directly, reinforcements will arrive instantly."

Kael's flames spiraled, forming ethereal whips. "Then we don't fight… yet. The Ember can distract and redirect them. We move around them, following the hidden paths it detects."

As they advanced, the forest seemed alive with subtle traps—warded roots, hidden glyphs, and energy pulses that threatened to alert the hub. Kael carefully probed each one, redirecting energy harmlessly into the ground while Rhyne cleared the path.

Finally, they reached a small clearing overlooking the hub. From here, Kael could see the inner chambers and the faint pulses of the hub's crystal. "There," Kael whispered. "That's the heart. If we destabilize it, the hub collapses, and the King's forces in this region weaken drastically."

Rhyne nodded, tightening his grip. "Then we plan. Precision and stealth. No alarms, no unnecessary risk. One mistake and the hub alerts the entire network."

Kael's flames coiled in anticipation, Ember pulsing like a heartbeat. "Agreed. This is the pivotal moment. We strike carefully, and we strike smart. The King won't know what hit him."

Above the valley, shadows twisted as the two prepared to infiltrate the hub, ready to turn the King's defenses against him.
