Chapter 29 - Non-Canon Special: The Emperor’s Star-Lit Feast

The Sovereign's Winter: A Non-Canon Special

Part I: The Emperor's New Tradition

The Xia Imperial Palace was a vision of gold and crimson, but with a twist that only Emperor Li Feng could conceive. Under his "Grand Festive Mandate," the normally stiff and terrifying palace had been transformed.

Massive pine trees from the northern frontier stood in every courtyard, draped in strands of real pearls and glowing jade lanterns. The scent of roasted chestnuts and spiced wine replaced the heavy, somber smell of ritual incense.

Li Feng sat upon the Dragon Throne, but the usual heavy imperial crown was replaced by a lightweight, fur-trimmed cap. He watched as his ministers, normally prone to arguing about grain prices, were currently engaged in a heated competition to see who could build the most "auspicious" snow-sculpture in the courtyard.

Divine Emperor Xuan Tian (hovering near the ceiling, looking down with a mix of horror and fascination):

> "I have watched this Dynasty for five hundred years. I have seen emperors celebrate victories by stacking the heads of their enemies. I have never seen an Emperor celebrate by making his Grand Chancellor wear a red sash and sing about a 'Shiny-Nosed Reindeer.' You are truly the strangest descendant I have ever had."

Li Feng (mental, sipping a cup of hot cocoa):

"It's called 'Soft Power,' old ghost. Look at them. They aren't plotting a coup; they're trying to figure out how to make a snow-dragon breathe real fire. Content ministers are stable ministers."

Part II: The Imperial Harem's Feast

The banquet was a masterpiece of "Modern-Imperial" fusion. Li Feng sat at a long, communal table rather than a high, isolated dais, flanked by his consorts.

Empress Wan Qing was dressed in shimmering silver silks that mimicked the falling snow. She was looking at Li Feng with a rare, soft smile, though she kept a protective hand on the large, velvet-wrapped box at her side.

"Your Majesty, I've decided that for this 'Christmas' tradition of yours, I shall be the only one allowed to pour your wine. If the Jin Consort tries to 'gift' you a private dance, I'm having the palace gates locked."

Consort Mei Lian (the Jin Consort) laughed behind her fan, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Oh, Empress, so territorial! I simply brought the Emperor a gift of twelve new merchant routes and a chest of chocolate from the Southern Isles. But if you insist on pouring the wine, do try not to spill any on your lovely dress. It would be a shame to ruin such… expensive silver."

Li Feng chuckled, leaning back. "Peace, my ladies. Tonight, the only thing we are conquering is this feast."

Part III: The "Grumpiest" Brother

Further down the table, Second Prince Li Ren was staring at a plate of "Gingerbread Warriors." He looked at the festive decorations with the suspicion of a man expecting an ambush.

Li Ren (whispering to a general): "Why is there a tree inside the hall? And why is the Emperor wearing antlers? Is this a psychological tactic to make the Tang envoys think we've all gone mad? Because if so… it's working. I feel insane."

General: "I don't know, Sire. But the 'Eggnog' the Emperor invented is surprisingly potent. I highly recommend a third cup."

Part IV: The Dowager's Blessing

The Empress Dowager Liu Yan sat in the place of honor. She watched Li Feng with a quiet, proud intensity. She didn't care about the strange traditions; she cared that for the first time in years, her son looked happy, not haunted.

She reached over and squeezed Li Feng's hand.

Liu Yan: "You have turned this cold stone palace into a home, Feng'er. That is a greater victory than any battlefield conquest."

Part V: The Heavenly Miracle

Divine Emperor Xuan Tian (rolling his eyes, but secretly impressed):

> "Fine! If everyone is being so disgustingly cheerful, I suppose I'll add some 'Divine' flair. But don't expect me to do this every year!"

The Ghost waved his sleeves. Suddenly, the sky above the Xia Capital cleared into a perfect, deep violet. A flurry of "Crystal Snow"—snow that glowed with a soft, blue light and didn't melt on contact—began to fall.

The entire city of the Xia looked up as the "Star-Snow" covered the rooftops. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated magic.

Part VI: The Final Toast

Li Feng stood up, raising his golden chalice to the crowded hall. The music died down as the Emperor spoke, his voice carrying the authority of a man who was no longer a "weakling" but a beloved Sovereign.

Li Feng: "To the Xia! To a winter of peace, a spring of prosperity, and to the family we choose. Let the lanterns burn bright tonight—we are the light of the East!"

The hall erupted in cheers.

Xuan Tian (vanishing into a puff of golden smoke):

> "Merry Christmas, you absolute madman. I'm going to go see if I can find some of that Eggnog."
