Warner's POV
Arlene has been distant ever since her heat ended. The possibility of pregnancy weighs heavily on her mind, and I can feel that anxiety bleeding into my own thoughts. The drive to the ranch passes without incident, though I hadn't expected any trouble.
I contacted Mylo beforehand, warning them we wouldn't stay long since Arlene seemed fragile. Yet the moment we arrive, something shifts in her demeanor. The vacant expression disappears from her eyes as if she's returning from somewhere far away. She even manages a smile while smoothing her blouse and checking her appearance.
Nicholson spots us immediately and shrieks with excitement, charging toward us at full speed. I scoop her up before she can barrel into Arlene, lifting her high as she squeals with delight. I press my face against her small belly and growl playfully.
"Daddy!" she shouts, throwing her arms around my neck with fierce determination.
