Chapter 103 - War of Faith: Part 33

Darkness.

Not the peaceful kind.

Hiroto felt like he was sinking through thick water, his body too heavy to move.

Voices echoed far away.

"…He's burning from the inside…"

"…Scar resonance hasn't stabilized…"

"…If he wakes too fast, he might lose himself…"

His fingers twitched.

Pain bloomed through his spine.

His eyes snapped open.

He gasped sharply, sitting up Only to scream.

Black lines flared across his chest like cracks in glass. The scar pulsed once… then again… before fading back into his skin.

Akari grabbed his shoulders.

"Don't move."

"…Akari?" His voice was hoarse. "Did we… win?"

Her expression darkened.

"We survived."

Yui stood near the cave wall, arms wrapped around herself.

"You killed it… the Commander. The sky went quiet after."

Hiroto's jaw tightened.

"I didn't mean to go that far…"

Akari didn't lie.

"You didn't choose it. The scar did."

Silence hung between them.

Then—

The Watcher entered the cave, cloak torn, face grim.

"They've changed your classification."

Hiroto looked up.

"…Meaning?"

"…You're no longer a variable."

"…You're a threat."

Yui swallowed.

"So… they're coming?"

The Watcher nodded.

"Not soldiers. Not Commanders."

Akari's eyes narrowed.

"…Observers."

The word carried weight.

"They won't attack," the Watcher continued.

"They'll study him. His growth. His limits. His breaking point."

Hiroto clenched his fists.

"So I'm an experiment now."

Akari placed a hand on his head.

"No. You're still human."

Outside the cave, the wind shifted.

A pressure passed through the mountains.

Not violent.

Just… watching.

Yui shivered.

"I feel eyes…"

The Watcher turned to Akari.

"They know you protected him."

Akari smirked coldly.

"Let them."

Hiroto tried to stand.

His legs trembled but held.

"…Then we move," he said.

"If they're watching… we don't stay still."

Akari studied him carefully.

"…You've changed."

He met her gaze.

"I had to."

Far above the clouds, light symbols rotated.

"Subject recovered."

"Psychological resistance: increasing."

"Scar stability: incomplete."

Another voice followed:

"Delay intervention."

"Allow conflict to mature."

Back in the cave Akari whispered so only Hiroto could hear:

"…They just gave you permission to grow."

Hiroto looked at his hands.

They were still shaking.

But they weren't empty anymore.

To be continued…
