The battlefield was quiet.
Not peaceful.
Just… empty.
Broken weapons lay scattered across the valley. Craters smoked. Light residue from the destroyed Commander still shimmered faintly in the air like dying stars.
Hiroto lay unconscious in Akari's arms.
His shadow had vanished completely.
Only shallow breathing proved he was still alive.
Yui ran to them, tears streaking down her face.
"Hiroto… Hiroto, wake up…"
Akari shook her head.
"He burned himself out. The scar drained him dry."
The Watcher limped closer, one eye shattered.
"…You shouldn't let the sky see him like this."
Akari's grip tightened.
"What do you mean?"
"…The moment they confirm he killed a Commander… he stops being an anomaly."
"…He becomes a priority."
The sky rumbled again.
More lights gathered above the clouds.
Not attacking.
Observing.
Akari felt it.
That cold pressure.
"They're waiting," she said quietly.
"They want to see what we do next."
She stood slowly, lifting Hiroto onto her back.
"All surviving units retreat formation!"
The soldiers hesitated.
"They'll chase us!"
Akari turned sharply.
"Then we don't let them see where he goes."
The Watcher nodded slowly.
"…Smart. Break line of sight."
Smoke flares ignited across the valley.
Stone walls were raised.
Illusion wards snapped into place.
The battlefield vanished beneath fog and distortion.
From the sky's view, Hiroto disappeared.
Yui clutched Akari's cloak as they ran.
"…Is he going to die?"
Akari didn't answer immediately.
"…Not today."
They reached the hidden ravine where the resistance medics waited.
Hiroto was laid onto cold stone.
His chest rose and fell unevenly.
Black veins faintly pulsed beneath his skin, fading in and out.
The medic whispered,
"…His body is fighting the scar."
Akari sat beside him.
"…Then let him win."
Far above, the lights in the clouds shifted.
One voice echoed across the Celestial Path.
"A Commander has fallen."
"Classification updated."
"Shadow-Bearer: Level Ascension Confirmed."
Another voice followed.
"Deploy observers."
"Do not engage… yet."
Back on the ground—
Hiroto twitched.
His fingers curled slightly.
And for a brief moment…
The scar beneath him pulsed.
Not violently.
Not painfully.
But… steadily.
Like a heartbeat learning a new rhythm.
To be continued…
