Chapter 95 - War of Faith: Part 25

Smoke drifted over the Broken Lands like mourning cloth.

The battlefield was silent except for the wounded.

Burned banners lay half-buried in glass-black stone. The remains of shattered scripture faded slowly from the air like dying embers.

Hiroto sat against a cracked pillar, breathing heavily.

His shadow no longer writhed.

It lay still thin and sharp, like a blade resting in its sheath.

Yui knelt beside him, wrapping cloth around his arm.

"You scared everyone," she said softly.

"You scared me."

Hiroto looked away.

"I thought… if I hesitated, they'd erase us."

Akari approached, spear resting on her shoulder.

"You didn't just defend us," she said.

"You sent a message."

"To who?" Hiroto asked.

"To heaven," she replied.

The Watcher stepped forward, his cracked mask catching the dim light.

"They now know," he said,

"that mortals can wound Celestial authority."

Goro let out a low whistle.

"Great. So now we're famous."

Akari turned to her commanders.

"Move the wounded to the inner ridge.

Rebuild defenses.

They'll counterattack."

One of the soldiers hesitated.

"Lady Akari… after what just happened… will they really send more?"

Akari's eyes hardened.

"They don't tolerate embarrassment."

High above, the sky remained calm.

Too calm.

The Watcher closed his eyes.

"They will not come as Judges again," he said.

"They will come as Executioners."

Hiroto slowly stood.

"Stronger than that thing?"

"More obedient," the Watcher replied.

"And less merciful."

Yui gripped Hiroto's sleeve.

"So this was just… the beginning?"

Akari nodded.

"This battle made us a threat.

Now the war truly starts."

Far away, in radiant halls of layered light…

Figures stood before a massive floating seal.

"The Judge failed," one voice said.

"A mortal pierced Celestial law," said another.

"The Shadow-Bearer destabilizes belief structures."

A third voice, colder than the rest:

"Then belief must be purified."

The seal cracked open slightly.

Within it moved shapes made of blinding light and burning command.

"Release the Executioners."

Back in the Broken Lands…

Hiroto stared at the scar beneath his feet.

"…They'll come for me."

Akari placed a hand on his shoulder.

"They'll come for all of us."

The wind shifted.

Carrying with it a strange pressure.

Not like prayer.

Not like faith.

But like approaching verdict.

The Watcher looked to the sky.

"…They're already moving."

Hiroto clenched his fist.

Then let it open.

Not in anger.

But in decision.

"Then next time," he said,

"I won't just wound them."

The Broken Lands pulsed faintly under his feet.

And far above, something began to descend.

To be continued…
