Chapter 3 - Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Logan and Bella were still in the cafeteria, talking with the others. Through the cafeteria windows, it was easy to see how the sky was gray and holding a storm above them—but this was Forks.

Surprise, stupid weather. I hate it, Logan thought. While talking to Bella, he suddenly saw a flash.

"Smile," Angela said, holding a camera in her hands, smiling wide. "It's for the school paper."

Bella immediately gave an awkward smile and looked at sweet Angela, Jessica and Eric's friend.

"Sorry, I needed an interview with the new kids," she explained, looking at the two of us.

"There will be no report, Angela," Eric told her, scolding her a bit. Then he looked at Bella. "I've got your back, babe."

Angela showed a disappointed expression.

"I guess we could talk about something else… maybe teenage alcohol consumption?" she asked with a little more enthusiasm.

Bella looked at her, wanting to help by giving ideas.

"You could talk about cafeteria food disasters… or swimsuit safety for the swim team…"

"Wait, that one is good!" Angela said, as if she had just won the lottery.

At that moment, Logan saw the doors open, and four completely different people walked in—people who could only be described as "unreal."

He felt it instantly: the difference, their eyes, the way they walked, their reactions, their acted breathing.

No, no… they were not human. And for someone without protection like him, the smartest thing would be to avoid them.

(Spoiler: yeah, that's probably not going to happen.)

All of them walked with a unique grace and charm. Together they went to sit down, but before they did, he saw it—felt it. A change. Something different. Them too. Their eyes met his, widened, and they exchanged glances with each other, as if saying what the hell just happened?

It was completely uncomfortable, even Mike and the others noticed.

"Eric, what did you do now? You annoyed the weirdos," Mike whispered.

"Don't say nonsense, I never talked to them at all," Eric said, hiding his face and sliding closer to Mike.

For Bella, it was something else. She was fascinated. It was the first time she saw people that amazing. She didn't even try to hide her surprise.

Logan felt it. He once heard the legends of the "cold ones": real vampires, not fairy tales. They were real and dangerous.

He knew it. Because vampires were that dangerous. His tribe described them as beings of unmatched beauty, pale skin, crimson eyes, extreme senses, and desires that sometimes became obsession.

"Who are they?" Bella asked.

"The Cullens," Angela answered.

Jessica quickly approached them to gossip.

"They're the adopted kids of Doctor and Mrs. Cullen," Jessica said, explaining everything without shame. "They all moved here from Alaska two years ago."

"They're a little reserved," Angela added.

"Because they're together," Jessica continued boldly. "They even sit together."

And she kept going:

"The blonde one is Rosalie, and the guy with dark hair is Emmett," she said, pointing at them with her eyes so Bella would follow.

Rosalie looked like an 18-year-old girl, blonde, beautiful—like a model, and she knew it.

Next to her was Emmett. He looked about 17, big, muscular, with a playful expression written all over him.

"Is that even legal? I mean, they're literally together," Jessica added, referring to their strange relationship.

"Jess, they're not even related. There's nothing wrong with it," Angela told her.

"But they live together. They're step-siblings," Jessica continued, as if this was something unbelievable. "The small one is Alice. She's extremely weird."

Alice was a tiny 17-year-old girl, thin, pixie-like, with short hair.

She was walking around a blond boy who looked about 18, tall, slim, and constantly wearing an expression like he was suffering.

"The other one is Jasper. He really looks like he's in pain," Angela said, this time sounding like she agreed. "I mean… Doctor Cullen is both adoptive father and Cupid."

"Maybe he'll adopt me," Angela joked.

Bella laughed at the joke—until she saw the last Cullen walk in: a tall boy, pale, slim, with bronze-colored messy hair.

His aura was more mysterious, almost innocent, and Bella couldn't take her eyes off him. Logan noticed this immediately.

"Hey, if you keep staring at him, you're gonna make a hole in his face," Logan said, almost shouting, embarrassing her more. "Shouldn't you talk to him or something?"

"And who's he?" Bella asked, ignoring Logan's comment.

"That's Edward Cullen."

Suddenly, he looked toward them. His eyes went to Bella, then to Logan, and his expression shifted to one of confusion—just like his siblings.

Logan stared back, and an uncomfortable silence formed before Jessica broke it without anyone noticing.

"He's totally gorgeous, obviously, but it seems like nobody is good enough for him," Jessica said with pure irony. "Don't even bother with him, trust me!"

"Relax, I wasn't planning to," Bella answered, but she couldn't help looking one more time.

He looked back, and a tense moment formed, something Logan picked up immediately.

His Cullen siblings, subtly, kept glancing in their direction from time to time.

He just wanted to disappear from those vampires' sight. It was way too early to have problems, right?
