Chapter 15 - 15:The First Mistake

Ben Tennyson did not sleep that night.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the van. The stillness. The feeling that something massive was pressing down on him from above, unseen but unmistakably present. The Omnitrix remained quiet on his wrist, yet he could feel it—like a pulse beneath his skin, responding to something far beyond Earth.

He lay awake, staring at the ceiling.

*They're not attacking,* Ben thought. *They're waiting.*

That scared him more than any monster he had ever fought.

Across the hall, Grandpa Max sat at the kitchen table, an old Plumber datapad activated in front of him. Its cracked screen flickered as encrypted signals scrolled past. Most of his contacts were silent. Some lines were dead entirely.

That alone told Max more than any message could.

Gwen watched him from the doorway. "You're not going to tell him, are you?"

Max exhaled slowly. "Not yet."

"Something's coming," Gwen said quietly. "I can feel it."

Max glanced at her, eyes sharp. "You're more perceptive than you let on, Gwen."

She crossed her arms. "So what are we going to do?"

Max shut down the datapad. "We prepare."

## **Orbit — Chimera Prime**

Vilgax stood within the Tactical Nexus, a chamber layered with glowing alien runes and floating data panels. Every movement on Earth played out before him in perfect clarity. Human military shifts. Plumber repositioning. Communications spikes.

And at the center of it all—

Ben.

"Subject emotional stability declining," the AI reported. "Sleep deprivation, heightened cortisol, impulsivity probability rising by thirty-two percent."

Vilgax nodded. "As expected."

He tapped the projection, zooming in on Ben pacing his room like a caged animal.

"Begin probability modeling," Vilgax ordered. "When will he act?"

The AI processed trillions of variables.

"Estimated: within twenty-four Earth hours. Likely trigger—perceived threat to family or peers."

Vilgax smiled faintly.

"So predictable."

He turned to a secondary projection—one labeled **Kevin Levin**.

The boy was older than Ben, already unstable, already burning from energy absorption overloads. In canon, Kevin's first encounter with Ben was chaotic and violent.

Vilgax intended to refine that chaos.

"Deploy Agent Threx," Vilgax commanded. "Target Kevin Levin. Subtle manipulation. I want him angry, desperate, and moving toward Bellwood."

"Yes, my lord."

The board shifted again—Dr. Animo, lurking in obscurity. Forever Knight cells awakening. Hex sensing magical disturbances.

Vilgax was not just playing with Ben.

He was reshaping the entire villain ecosystem.

"Let them stir," Vilgax said. "Fear draws monsters. Monsters draw heroes."

And heroes make mistakes.

## **Bellwood — The Following Afternoon**

Ben snapped.

School ended early, but he didn't go home. He didn't even tell Gwen. The pressure had built too high. He needed air. Space. Control.

He slipped into an alley behind the mall, glancing over his shoulder.

Nothing.

No vans.

No watchers.

*Maybe I imagined it.*

His fingers hovered over the Omnitrix.

*Just one transformation. Just to be safe.*

He slapped it down.

Green light exploded outward.

Four Arms landed in the alley with a heavy thud, cracking the pavement beneath him.

Ben flexed his fists, heart racing.

"Okay… okay… see? Everything's fine."

Then the air *shifted*.

A sharp, invisible pressure snapped around him like a noose.

Four Arms staggered.

"What the—?"

A low-frequency hum vibrated through the alley walls. Symbols ignited along the bricks, glowing red and gold.

A containment field.

Ben roared and punched outward.

The barrier didn't budge.

From the shadows, a figure stepped forward—tall, humanoid, wearing civilian clothes that barely concealed metallic skin beneath.

"Hello, Ben Tennyson," the stranger said smoothly. "We've been waiting for you."

Ben's blood ran cold. "Who are you?!"

The man tilted his head. "An observer."

Then the field collapsed.

Not outward.

Inward.

Four Arms reverted instantly.

Ben dropped to his knees, gasping.

The stranger activated a small device, projecting a hologram.

A massive figure filled the alley's airspace.

Tentacled.

Armored.

Eyes burning with intelligence.

Vilgax.

Ben stared up, frozen.

"Ben Tennyson," Vilgax's voice echoed, deep and calm. "You have already disappointed me."

Ben's voice shook. "Y-you're… you're Vilgax."

"Correct."

Ben clenched his fists. "I've beaten you before!"

Vilgax's eyes narrowed. "No. You have survived me. There is a difference."

The hologram leaned closer.

"You used the Omnitrix in public," Vilgax continued. "Alone. Emotionally compromised. Predictable."

Ben swallowed hard.

"This is your first mistake."

The hologram vanished.

The stranger stepped back.

"You'll live," he said. "For now."

He tossed something at Ben's feet—a small black disc.

Then he was gone.

The alley returned to silence.

Ben picked up the device with trembling hands.

It activated instantly.

Grandpa Max's voice played.

*"Ben, if you're hearing this… they're watching us. I've been compromised."*

Ben's eyes widened. "Grandpa…?"

The message cut off.

Ben bolted.

## **Orbit — Chimera Prime**

Vilgax watched Ben run through Bellwood, panic fueling every step.

"Emotional collapse imminent," the AI stated.

Vilgax clasped his hands behind his back.

"Good."

He turned to a new projection.

Kevin Levin's train barreled toward Bellwood.

Dr. Animo's lab lights flickered on.

The Forever Knights activated ancient vaults.

And the Plumbers—

The Plumbers were moving too late.

Vilgax smiled.

"Chaos is accelerating."

He lifted his gaze toward Earth.

"Ben Tennyson," he said softly, "you have stepped onto the board."

His eyes gleamed with anticipation.

"And now… the game begins."
