Chapter 21 - 21:The Shape of a Weapon

Kevin Levin woke up screaming.

Not from pain.

From hunger.

It clawed at him from the inside, a gnawing, endless void that no amount of energy absorption ever truly filled. His skin flickered in the dim light of the abandoned subway station, shifting textures without his consent—metal, crystal, stone, something darker beneath it all.

He slammed a fist into the concrete wall.

The impact caved it in.

Kevin laughed, breathless and sharp. "Yeah… that's new."

Something had changed.

Not just his power.

His *clarity*.

For the first time since the accident, the noise in his head had quieted. The rage was still there, but it was focused now, like a blade instead of a fire.

A voice echoed through the tunnel.

"Adaptation successful."

Kevin froze.

Red light traced itself along the rails, forming a geometric projection that hovered several feet above the ground. Vilgax's image emerged slowly, massive and composed, as if he owned the space by right.

Kevin snarled. "Get outta my head."

Vilgax tilted his head slightly. "If I were in your head, Kevin Levin, you would not be capable of resistance."

Kevin felt a chill despite the heat radiating from his altered body.

"So what," Kevin spat, "you here to kill me too?"

"No," Vilgax replied calmly. "I am here to *free* you."

Kevin barked a laugh. "Yeah? Everyone says that right before they put me in a cage."

Vilgax extended one massive hand.

Images bloomed in the air—Plumber detention cells, containment protocols, Max Tennyson reviewing files with grim resolve.

"They will never stop hunting you," Vilgax said. "Because you are useful only as a threat."

Kevin's jaw tightened.

"I offer something else," Vilgax continued. "Purpose."

## **Bellwood — The Aftershock**

Ben hadn't slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Steele collapsing, heard Vilgax's calm voice echoing through his house like it belonged there.

The news played silently on the TV.

Blackout across multiple states. Military "training exercises." Increased federal presence near Bellwood.

Gwen paced the living room. "They're locking the city down, Ben. Slowly. Quietly."

Ben rubbed his face. "He wanted this."

"Obviously," Gwen snapped. "The question is why now."

Ben stared at his hands.

Because I'm cracking, he thought.

The door creaked open.

Grandpa Max stepped inside, bruised but standing.

Ben shot to his feet. "Grandpa!"

Max raised a hand quickly. "Easy. I'm fine."

Gwen rushed over. "They had you!"

"They tried," Max said grimly. "But they underestimated how many favors I still have."

He sat down heavily, eyes serious. "Vilgax made a move."

Ben nodded. "He showed himself."

Max exhaled slowly. "Then it's worse than I thought."

Ben looked up sharply. "You knew?"

"I knew he was *watching*," Max said. "I didn't think he'd accelerate this fast."

Gwen crossed her arms. "Why Bellwood?"

Max looked at Ben.

Ben swallowed. "Don't."

Max didn't look away. "Because something here matters more than the city."

Ben stood abruptly. "I didn't ask for this!"

"No," Max said softly. "But he's making sure you can't walk away."

## **Subway — The Deal**

Kevin stared at the projection, fists clenched.

"What's the catch?" he asked.

Vilgax's lips curled slightly. "You fight for me."

Kevin scoffed. "I don't do bosses."

Vilgax nodded. "You do survival."

He changed the projection.

Kevin saw himself—captured, restrained, drained. Scientists in white coats. Needles. Screaming.

Then another future.

Kevin standing tall, his form stable, controlled, no longer mutating randomly. Power flowing where he commanded it.

"You are broken because your world fears what you could become," Vilgax said. "I will give you the tools to decide that for yourself."

Kevin's breath quickened.

"And the kid?" Kevin asked suddenly. "The one they keep comparing me to."

Vilgax's gaze sharpened. "Benjamin Tennyson is not your enemy."

Kevin blinked. "Then who is?"

Vilgax smiled thinly.

"Everyone who would rather see you chained."

Silence stretched.

Kevin laughed quietly. "Man… you're good at this."

Vilgax inclined his head. "I am efficient."

Kevin's eyes hardened. "Alright. I'll play."

Vilgax's projection flared brighter.

"But," Kevin added, "I'm not your soldier."

Vilgax nodded once. "Agreed."

Kevin frowned. "That was too easy."

"You are not a soldier," Vilgax said calmly. "You are a *weapon*."

## **Bellwood — The Hunt Begins**

Sirens echoed outside.

Max looked out the window grimly. "They've declared a containment perimeter."

Gwen cursed. "They're treating this like an alien invasion."

Ben clenched his teeth. "Because it is."

Max placed a hand on Ben's shoulder. "Listen to me. Whatever Vilgax wants, he's using pressure. Not force."

Ben nodded slowly. "He wants me to react."

"Yes," Max said. "And if you do, they'll justify everything he showed them."

Ben looked toward the window, at the flashing lights and armed vehicles.

Then his watch buzzed faintly.

Not an alert.

A *pulse*.

Ben winced, grabbing his wrist.

Gwen noticed instantly. "Ben?"

"I don't know why," Ben said through clenched teeth, "but something just changed."

## **Elsewhere — Power Unleashed**

Kevin stood atop a warehouse roof, energy rippling across his body in controlled waves.

Vilgax's final message echoed in his mind.

*Test yourself.*

Kevin grinned.

Below him, armored vehicles rolled through the streets.

"Guess I'll start small," Kevin muttered.

He leapt.

The street exploded on impact.

Vehicles flipped. Alarms screamed. Soldiers shouted in panic.

Kevin stood at the center of it all, laughing as energy surged through him without tearing him apart.

Far above, Vilgax observed calmly.

"Excellent," he said.

He turned his attention back to Ben Tennyson.

"Your world tightens its grip," Vilgax murmured. "And my pieces fall into place."

On Earth, Ben clutched his wrist as the pulse echoed again—stronger this time.

Kevin Levin was awake.

And the game had truly begun.
