Chapter 23 - The Backstrap Loom

They did not even give Hayoon a chance to object!

Hayoon stared blankly. "Ah..."

Now that they had taken everything away, did that not mean she no longer had any work to do?

The sub-beastman did not give her any chance to refuse. Smiling brightly, they put on their raincoats and hats, waved goodbye to her, and rushed into the curtain of rain.

Hayoon stood there for a moment before she could not help laughing softly.

The people of the beast world were truly too honest and straightforward.

Well then, she might as well go cook.

Besides the stir-fried lamb with scallions, Hayoon also made a cold dish using wild vegetables and Tangroot, along with steamed root mash for dinner.

After eating her fill, she noticed it was still early and said to Haeun and Minho, "I'm going out to cut some wooden sticks. I might come back a bit late."

Minho's long, deep red eyes turned toward her. "I'll go with you. I'm more familiar with this area."

After thinking for a moment, Hayoon did not refuse. "Then thank you."

Haeun immediately said, "I'm going too!"

Hayoon shook her head. "Stay here and watch the house. Some other sub-beastman might come by later."

Haeun's small face instantly drooped. "Alright..."

Hayoon curled her lips into a smile and could not resist rubbing the thick panda ears on top of his head.

Taking advantage of the lighter rain, she and Minho did not waste any time and headed out to look for wood.

After carefully selecting materials, Hayoon not only brought back a bundle of wooden sticks with suitable hardness, but also split several wooden boards using a stone axe.

After returning, she sat beneath the grass shelter and took out some leftover beast-hide scraps, hemp rope, bone needles, and other tools.

As he squatting curiously beside her, Haeun asked, "Sis, what are you making? Do you need my help?"

Hayoon replied, "I need to study it first. I'll call you if I need anything."

Haeun nodded obediently. "Okay!"

What she was making was called a backstrap loom, an ancient weaving tool.

Although she had never personally woven cloth before, back when she was in school, she had seriously studied the principles of weaving out of personal interest while visiting museums.

A backstrap loom was not only easy to learn, but also far more efficient and less labor-intensive than hand weaving.

Most importantly, its structure was simple and did not require many tools to make, making it perfectly suited for her current situation.

After figuring everything out in her mind, she finally began working on it.

The primitive backstrap loom did not have a frame because the person using it served as the "frame."

The beast hide Hayoon had selected would be sewn into a leather pad to cushion her lower back.

As for the other important parts, the heddle rod, the shed rod, and the weaving sword, she used wooden sticks for the first two.

For the last one, she selected a thin wooden board about half a palm wide and used a bone knife to sharpen one side into a narrow edge.

Because the tools were inconvenient to use, this step alone took her quite a while.

Once everything was prepared, she took out the hemp thread the original owner had spun before.

Following both her memories and her own understanding, she wound the thread onto the loom beam, arranged the heddle rod and shed rod, then used her body to support the backstrap loom as she carefully attempted to weave a piece of cloth.

It worked!

Although she discovered a few small issues during the process, they were all easy to adjust.

After struggling through the first short section, the hemp cloth woven afterward gradually became much flatter and more even.

At first, Haeun had been squatting beside her.

But eventually, he simply sat down on the ground, his expression slowly changing from curiosity and confusion into shock and amazement.

"Sis, is this cloth? It is, right? Oh my Beast God, how did you do this? How did the threads just pass back and forth a couple times, the sticks move up and down, and suddenly it becomes cloth? I've been watching the whole time, so why does it still feel like I missed something?"

Laughing softly, Hayoon removed the hemp threads from the loom as she replied, "If I explain it once, you'll understand."

Haeun nodded eagerly. "Mm-hm!"

Hayoon looked up, only to realize she could not find Minho anywhere.

Then she glanced at the sky.

It was already this late!

No wonder her back and waist were aching so badly.

After waiting for a while, Haeun asked again, "Sis?"

Hayoon replied, "It's too late today. I'll explain it tomorrow. Let's sleep first."

Haeun pouted slightly. "Alright then. Just don't forget."

"I won't forget. I'll still need your help," she said.

The next day, the rain was still falling.

Thinking about the cloth she wanted to weave, Hayoon got up early in the morning and used the ingredients Minho provided to prepare breakfast for the three of them.

Unexpectedly, not long after breakfast ended, sub-beastmen began arriving one after another.

Sulyeon was the first to come.

She handed the bundle of hemp thread tied to a wooden board over to Hayoon and asked, "Take a look. Is this alright?"

Hayoon accepted it and widened her eyes slightly in surprise.

Because she had chosen Fire Flame Hemp, the spun thread carried a silver-white sheen that looked especially beautiful in daylight.

And this bundle of thread was evenly spun and exceptionally soft.

Hayoon exclaimed in admiration, "This is so much better than the thread I spun myself! Did you stay up very late working on it yesterday?"

Sulyeon smiled and replied, "Not really. My mother helped me spin it too. As long as it's usable, I'm relieved."

Hayoon said sincerely, "Thank you so much."

Sulyeon shook her head. "It's nothing. Your hemp fibers were just very good quality. I never knew hemp thread could be spun this fine and durable while still looking this beautiful. Even my mother couldn't stop admiring it."
