Chapter 30 - 6.3-Notes Between Heartbeats

The small hotel room had become their refuge.

After rehearsals ended and the last autographs were signed, they always retreated together, shedding the stiffness of travel schedules and the expectations of the stage.

Yu Zhen worked on manuscript edits by the window, pencil tapping against parchment in thoughtful rhythm. Lian Xuan usually practised nearby, headphones on, quietly reviewing passages.

They didn't speak much.

They didn't need to.

The companionship settled naturally, like a breath shared.

[MEMORY FRAGMENT 6: 51%] Close Enough

One evening, Yu Zhen shifted from the desk and leaned back against the headboard, thumbing through a worn music notebook.

Lian Xuan sat beside him without thinking, legs brushing.

The casual contact stunned them both into brief stillness.

Neither moved away.

Instead, Lian Xuan slowly leaned back too, shoulder resting against Yu Zhen's arm.

Small warmth bloomed.

Comfort.

After a few moments, he spoke quietly:

"This is easier than standing alone."

Yu Zhen angled toward him.

"You don't have to be alone here."

The pianist hesitated, then let his head fall gently against Yu Zhen's shoulder.

Yu Zhen's breath hitched, but he didn't pull away.

His hand lifted naturally and combed slowly through the dark strands of Lian Xuan's hair, soothing and light.

They sat like that for a long time.

No rush.

No expectation.

Just closeness.

[SOUL THREAD: STABILITY DEEPENING] A First Kiss

It was the music that tipped the moment.

Yu Zhen hummed a melody under his breath, the same unfinished tune he'd struggled with before their duet.

Lian Xuan lifted his head slightly.

"You never stop thinking about that song," he murmured.

"It follows me."

He turned slowly toward Yu Zhen.

They were very close now, lips nearly touching, breath mingling.

Yu Zhen didn't retreat.

Neither did Lian Xuan.

The kiss happened gently, a careful brush of lips, soft enough to feel like a test of reality more than passion.

A quiet, trembling promise.

When they pulled back, neither spoke.

Both were smiling.

Later that night, after rehearsal fatigue finally claimed them, Yu Zhen found Lian Xuan standing by the window, staring out at the city lights.

"You look far away," Yu Zhen said softly.

Lian Xuan turned.

"Every time I feel close to you…"

He swallowed.

"…I remember something I can't fully reach."

Yu Zhen crossed the room and wrapped his arms lightly around Lian Xuan.

The pianist stiffened for half a second, then melted gently into the hug.

They stood chest to chest, breathing in sync.

Thumbs brushing comfortingly against each other's backs.

"Then hold what you can reach," Yu Zhen whispered near his ear.

"And don't fear what comes later."

Lian Xuan's hands curled at Yu Zhen's waist, not gripping, just anchoring himself.

Shared Bed, Shared Peace

That night, there was no doubt about where they would sleep.

They didn't discuss it.

Just simply crawled into the same bed, facing each other beneath heavy sheets.

Yu Zhen opened his arms, and Lian Xuan moved quietly into them.

Head against Yu Zhen's collarbone.

Arm around his waist.

Their legs pressed lightly together for warmth.

It felt ancient.

Familiar.

Safe.

Yu Zhen rested a hand between Lian Xuan's shoulder blades, fingers tracing slow circles until Lian Xuan finally relaxed completely.

Sleep came gently, but dreams returned violently.

Yu Zhen dreamed of standing amid a shattered star orchestra, celestial harps broken under divine fire.

Lian Xuan dreamed of cradling a glowing soul slip from his arms while screaming into collapsing space.

Both woke at the same moment.

Breathing hard.

They found themselves still clinging together.

Lian Xuan whispered shakily:

"Tell me… Am I always this afraid of losing you?"

Yu Zhen closed his eyes.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then softer:

"But you always find me again."

They didn't break the embrace.

They didn't want to.
