Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Monster

The crowd surged.

Jayden's eye flared crimson.

"Cinna. Run. Find somewhere safe."

"But "

"NOW!"

She ran. Marcus moved to follow.

"Stay," Jayden said. "Tank the frontline. I'll handle the rest."

"You can't "

"Watch me."

The first students reached them.

Jayden moved.

Not full speed. Controlled. Precise.

His shadow blade materialized. Lightning crackled along the edge.

Three students. Fire, ice, earth.

His eye tracked them all.

[Speed differential: 340%, 280%, 310%]

Too slow.

He flowed between their attacks like water. Shadow blade flashed three times.

Not lethal. Just disabling.

Three students down. Unconscious. Breathing.

"He's fighting back!"

"Get him!"

Ten more charged.

Jayden's speed climbed. 12.9 units. Then 13.4. Passive growth screaming.

He didn't want this. Didn't want to hurt them.

But they weren't giving him a choice.

His blade danced. Students fell. One. Five. Ten.

Marcus held the left flank. Stone fists crushing attacks. Taking hits to protect Jayden's blind spots.

"There's too many!" Marcus shouted.

"I know!"

Twenty students down now. Thirty.

The crowd didn't stop.

They kept coming. Wave after wave. Fear turned to fury turned to desperation.

Drake launched a massive fireball.

Jayden's eye saw it. Dodged. Countered.

His kick caught Drake in the ribs. Not full power. Just enough.

Drake crumpled.

"He's not even trying!" someone screamed. "He's holding back and still winning!"

That made it worse somehow.

Proof he was too strong. Too dangerous. Too different.

Fifty students down.

Jayden's body was on autopilot now. Omni feeding him data faster than thought.

Dodge left. Parry. Strike. Move.

His speed hit 14.2 units. Then 14.7.

Growing mid battle. Again.

Proving their point. Becoming the monster they feared.

No. I'm not

An ice spear pierced his shoulder.

Pain exploded. He stumbled.

The crowd saw weakness. Pressed harder.

Marcus caught him. "You good?"

"Fine." Blood soaked his shirt. "Keep moving."

They fought back to back. Two against hundreds.

Seventy students down now.

Eighty.

Ninety.

Jayden's vision blurred. Exhaustion clawing at him. He couldn't maintain this forever.

But he couldn't stop either.

Stopping meant dying. Or worse losing control completely.

A sword came at his neck.

His eye flashed. Hand caught the blade mid swing.

Blood dripped from his palm.

"Please," Jayden said. Voice hoarse. "Don't make me do this."

The student's eyes widened. Saw the crimson glow. The barely restrained power.

The fear.

He dropped his sword and ran.

Others saw it too. Started backing away.

One hundred students down. Half the mob.

The rest hesitated.

Jayden stood in the center of bodies. All breathing. All alive. All broken.

His eye burned. Blood dripped from a dozen wounds. Shadow and lightning still crackling around him.

He looked like exactly what they feared.

A monster barely holding back.

"Anyone else?" His voice echoed across the silent courtyard.

No one moved.

Then

"JAYDEN CROSS!"

Headmaster Theron's voice boomed like thunder.

The crowd parted.

Theron strode through. Professor Vance beside him. Kane behind them.

And trailing them Elena. Zain. The entire advanced class. Every high ranking student at the Academy.

They stopped ten feet away.

Theron's face was stone. "Stand down."

"They attacked first," Marcus said.

"I know." Theron looked at the carnage. One hundred unconscious students. "I watched it all."

Silence.

"You watched?" Jayden's blood ran cold.

"From my office window. For fifteen minutes." Theron's eyes swept the courtyard. "I wanted to see what you'd do when cornered. When outnumbered. When given every reason to lose control."

This was a test.

"And?" Jayden's voice shook. With rage. With exhaustion. With betrayal.

"You held back. Every strike non lethal. Every movement defensive." Theron approached. "Two hundred students tried to kill you. You disabled half without taking a single life."

"So what? You got your answer. I passed your test." Jayden's eye blazed brighter. "What now? Still gonna expel me?"

"No."

The word hung in the air.

"What?" Drake pushed through the crowd. Face bleeding. "He just assaulted a hundred students!"

"He defended himself against a coordinated mob attack." Vance's voice was ice. "An attack I suspect you organized, Drake Crimson."

Drake's face paled.

"You're expelled," Theron said flatly. "Pack your things. You have one hour."

"But "

"NOW."

Drake fled.

Theron turned back to Jayden. "The vote is cancelled. You're staying. Officially promoted to Sonnet rank effective immediately based on combat performance."

Jayden wanted to feel relief.

But all he felt was empty.

"You let this happen. You watched them try to kill me."

"Yes." Theron didn't flinch. "Because I needed to know if you'd become Lucian when pushed. If you'd snap. Lose control. Become the threat they feared."

"And if I had?"

"Then I would've stopped you. And expelled you myself." Theron's expression softened slightly. "But you didn't. You proved you're better than your power. Better than your fear."

Marcus helped Jayden stay upright. His shoulder screamed. His essence reserves were at 12%.

Elena stepped forward. "For what it's worth you did good."

"Did I?" Jayden looked at the broken bodies. "Because it doesn't feel good."

Zain approached next. "You could've killed them all in seconds. You didn't. That's what separates fighters from monsters."

The advanced class surrounded them. A wall between Jayden and the remaining mob.

Protection.

Acceptance.

Finally.

But at what cost?

Theron raised his voice. "Anyone who attacks Jayden Cross again will be expelled immediately. No trials. No appeals. Understood?"

The crowd dispersed. Slowly. Reluctantly.

Jayden collapsed.

Marcus caught him. "Medic! We need a medic!"

Healers rushed forward.

Green light washed over him. The pain dulled.

His eye flickered. Faded back to normal brown.

The last thing he saw before darkness was Elena standing watch.

And beyond her Headmaster Theron, walking away without looking back.

The test was over.

But the real game was just beginning.
