Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Watcher

Day three in the dungeon. Floor eight entrance.

Jayden stopped suddenly.

His eye blazed crimson. Full analysis mode.

"We're being watched."

Everyone froze.

"What?" Elena's rapier manifested instantly.

"Someone's been following us. For days." Jayden's eye tracked the essence signature. Distant. Powerful. "They've been three floors behind us. Always maintaining distance."

Marcus raised his fists. "How strong?"

Jayden's eye pulsed. Numbers flooded his vision.

**[UNKNOWN ENTITY]**

**[Essence output: Master rank minimum]**

**[Speed: 18.7 units estimated]**

**[Power: 21.3 units estimated]**

**[Combat probability: 30% victory chance]**

"Stronger than all of us combined. Omni gives us 30% odds if we fight."

"Shit." Zain's gauntlets formed. "Academy hunter?"

"Don't know. But they've had multiple chances to attack. Haven't taken them."

"So what do they want?" Cinna asked.

"Only one way to find out." Jayden turned. "We investigate. Carefully."

Elena nodded. "Formation. Stay tight."

They backtracked. Down one floor. Then two.

The signature didn't move. Didn't hide.

Almost like it was waiting.

Floor six. The collapsing tunnels.

A figure stood in the center of a cleared chamber.

Dark cloak. Academy insignia visible underneath.

Jayden's heart stopped.

The figure lowered her hood.

Professor Vance.

"Shit," Marcus breathed.

She raised her hands. Empty. No weapons.

"I'm not here to fight."

"Then why are you here?" Jayden's blade stayed manifested. Shadow and lightning crackling.

"To help." Vance stepped forward slowly. "The entire city of Nexus is mobilized. Guilds. Mercenaries. Even kingdom soldiers. They're hunting you."

"We know that."

"Do you know Theron put a 500,000 gold bounty on Jayden? Dead or alive?" Her expression was grim. "You're not just fugitives anymore. You're the most wanted criminals in three kingdoms."

Silence.

"Why tell us?" Elena asked. "Why help?"

Vance's eyes moved to Jayden. "Because I've seen this before. Twenty years ago."

"Lucian," Jayden said quietly.

"Yes." Vance sat on a broken pillar. Exhaustion in her movements. "Lucian Valeheart. I was his friend. When we both attended the Academy."

The group exchanged glances.

"You knew him?" Zain asked.

"We were teammates. Partners. I watched them break him." Her voice cracked slightly. "The experiments. The restrictions. The fear. I did nothing to stop it."

"Why?"

"Because I was a coward. I believed the faculty when they said it was for everyone's safety. For the greater good." She looked up. "Then Lucian snapped. Killed seventeen professors. Destroyed half the Academy. Disappeared."

Marcus sat down hard. "And you think "

"I think history is repeating. And this time I won't stand by." Vance pulled out a folder. "I have information. Evidence of who sabotaged the Ashwood dungeon. Who's been orchestrating everything."

Jayden's eye pulsed. Scanned her.

**[PROFESSOR VANCE]**

**[Deception probability: 8%]**

**[Truth probability: 92%]**

**[Threat level: Low]**

She was telling the truth.

"Who?" Jayden stepped closer. "Who's behind this?"

Vance opened the folder. Photos. Documents. Communication records.

"Headmaster Theron. Professor Kane. And a council of nobles who fund the Academy." She laid them out. "They orchestrated the attack. Planted the corrupted wolf. Wanted you dead before you became too powerful."

"Why?"

"Because you're growing faster than Lucian did. At this rate, you'll hit Transcendent before twenty." Vance's expression darkened. "They can't control that. Can't contain it. So they decided to eliminate you."

Elena read through the documents. "This is treason. Against the Academy's own charter."

"Yes. But they control the narrative. You're the villains in their story." Vance stood. "Which is why you need allies. Real ones."

"You want to join us?" Marcus asked skeptically.

"I want to help you survive. And when you're strong enough, help you expose them." She looked at Jayden. "Lucian was alone. Isolated. That's what broke him. You have a team. That's your advantage."

Jayden's mind raced. This changed everything.

"What do you know about Lucian now? Is he alive?"

Vance hesitated. "The official story is he died twenty years ago. But..." She pulled out another photo.

A man. Mid thirties. Dark hair. Cold eyes. Standing in front of a fortress.

"This was taken three months ago. In Ashenfell."

Jayden's blood went cold. "That's "

"Lucian Valeheart. Alive. And based on essence readings, he's Transcendent rank. Possibly beyond."

The room went silent.

"So the man we're supposedly becoming," Zain said slowly, "is alive. And stronger than ever."

"Yes. And if Theron knows and I suspect he does then this isn't just about containing you, Jayden." Vance's voice dropped. "It's about preventing another Lucian from rising. Even if it means murder."

Cinna spoke up. "So what do we do?"

"You keep training. Get stronger. I'll feed you information, supplies, safe routes." Vance moved toward the exit. "And when the time comes, we expose everything. Clear your names. Take down the corruption."

"Why should we trust you?" Elena asked.

"Because I failed Lucian. I won't fail you too." Vance stopped at the doorway. "I'll check in every three days. Floor three, dawn. If I'm not there, assume I'm compromised."

She vanished into the shadows.

The group stood in stunned silence.

"Well," Marcus said finally. "That was a lot."

"Theron tried to kill us," Cinna whispered. "The Headmaster. He actually "

"We have proof now." Elena held up the folder. "This changes everything."

Jayden stared at Lucian's photo. The man he was supposedly becoming.

Alive. Transcendent. Hidden.

His eye pulsed.

**[NEW VARIABLE DETECTED: LUCIAN VALEHEART (ALIVE)]**

**[Threat assessment: UNKNOWN]**

**[Ally probability: 23%]**

**[Enemy probability: 61%]**

**[Neutral probability: 16%]**

"We need to get stronger," Jayden said. "Fast. If Lucian's out there and Theron's hunting us, we're caught in the middle."

"Agreed." Zain cracked his knuckles. "Eight more floors. Let's clear them."

"And then?" Cinna asked.

Jayden looked at his team. His friends. The people who'd risked everything for him.

"Then we stop running. And start fighting back."

His eye burned crimson in the darkness.

Somewhere above, the world hunted them.

Somewhere in Ashenfell, Lucian waited.

But here, in this dungeon, they had time.

Time to grow.

Time to prepare.

Time to become what everyone feared.

And when they emerged, nothing would be the same.
