Two weeks passed in a blur of healing and whispers.
Jayden walked through the Academy halls and felt every eye on him. Students parted like water. Some stared in awe. Others in fear.
*The guy who killed a B rank.*
*Did you see his eye glow?*
*He's dangerous.*
Marcus and Cinna flanked him. A united front.
"They're scared," Cinna muttered.
"Good," Marcus said. "Means nobody'll mess with us."
They reached the advanced training facility. A separate building at the Academy's edge, surrounded by essence barriers that shimmered in the morning light.
Two guards stood at the entrance. They checked IDs and stepped aside.
Inside was different. No crowds. No noise. Just a sleek corridor leading to a massive underground complex.
"Fancy," Marcus whispered.
The corridor opened into a central arena. Fifty yards across, reinforced floors, observation decks above. A dozen students were already there.
Elena stood near the center, ice rapier manifested. She glanced at Jayden. Nodded once.
Zain Corvus leaned against a wall, arms crossed. His cold eyes tracked Jayden's approach.
Drake was there too, looking significantly less confident than before. A few other faces Jayden recognized from classes.
"Welcome."
A woman stepped into the arena. Tall, muscular, scars crossing her face. Expert rank insignia on her uniform.
"I'm Instructor Kael. Former Grandmaster combatant, retired due to injury." She surveyed the group. "You fifteen are the Academy's strongest. You're here because the Concordant Trials are in six months, and we refuse to send weaklings."
She gestured to the arena.
"This is where you'll break. Where you'll bleed. Where you'll either become legends or wash out." Her smile was sharp. "Questions?"
A student raised his hand. "What's the training schedule?"
"Every day. Six hours minimum. Combat drills, essence refinement, tactical exercises, and sparring." Kael pointed at various sections of the facility. "You'll have access to essence chambers, manifestation training rooms, and restricted dungeons."
"Restricted dungeons?" someone asked.
"B rank and above. Supervised." Her eyes swept the group. "Some of you might die. That's the cost of advancement."
Silence.
"Now. Introductions." She pointed at Zain. "You. Name, rank, abilities."
"Zain Corvus. Expert rank, close to Master. Earth affinity, stone manifestation, enhanced strength talent." His voice was flat. Mechanical.
She moved to Elena. "You."
"Elena Northstar. Sonnet rank. Ice and Light dual affinity. Ice rapier manifestation. Enhanced agility and tactical genius talents."
One by one, students introduced themselves. Most were Sonnet or Expert rank. A few Novices who'd shown exceptional promise.
Then Kael stopped at Jayden.
"You. The anomaly."
All eyes turned.
"Jayden Cross. Novice rank. Shadow and Lightning dual affinity. Shadow blade manifestation." He paused. "Enhanced speed and combat adaptation talents."
"And?"
"And what?"
"Your eye. The one that let you kill a B rank solo." Kael stepped closer. "What is it?"
*Here we go.*
"A talent called Omni. It predicts movements and scans opponents."
"That's it?"
"That's what I'm telling you."
Kael studied him. "You're lying. But I don't care. Whatever that eye does, use it." She stepped back. "Marcus Garrett. Cinna Vael. Introduce yourselves."
Marcus went next. "Marcus Garrett. Sonnet rank. Earth affinity. Stone gauntlets manifestation. Enhanced strength, immovable stance, natural regeneration."
"Three talents?" Someone muttered. "Lucky bastard."
Cinna spoke quietly. "Cinna Vael. Bozo rank. Life affinity. Healing butterflies manifestation. Empathy talent."
"Bozo rank?" Drake scoffed. "Why is she here?"
"Because she tripled her effective healing range in two months and maintained barriers under B rank assault," Kael said coldly. "Can you say the same?"
Drake shut up.
"Now that introductions are done " Kael clapped her hands. "First exercise. Sparring. Full contact. I need to see your actual levels."
She pulled out a tablet. "Jayden Cross versus Zain Corvus."
*Of course.*
Jayden stepped into the center. Zain pushed off the wall, cracking his knuckles.
"Heard you got lucky in the dungeon," Zain said. "Let's see if you can back it up."
"Rules," Kael called. "No killing blows. Fight ends when I say or when someone surrenders. Begin!"
Zain moved immediately.
Fast. Faster than the golems.
His fist came at Jayden's face, stone forming around the knuckles.
Jayden's eye flickered. Stealth mode.
**[ZAIN CORVUS]**
**[Speed: 13.2 units. Power: 16.8 units.]**
Not enough data. Jayden switched to full mode for a split second.
His eye blazed red black.
**[FULL ANALYSIS: Right hook feint. Real attack: Low sweep. 0.3 seconds.]**
Omni saw everything.
Jayden sidestepped the punch. Jumped the sweep.
Landed and countered with his shadow blade.
Zain blocked with stone covered forearms. The impact rang out.
"Fast," Zain muttered.
They traded blows. Jayden's speed was 12.1 now fully recovered from the dungeon incident and slightly improved.
But Zain was 13.2. And his strength was overwhelming.
Every block rattled Jayden's bones. Every exchange pushed him back.
*Can't overpower him. Need to outthink him.*
Jayden's eye pulsed. Analyzing patterns.
**[PATTERN DETECTED: Zain favors right side attacks. Left side opens 0.2 seconds after each strike.]**
There.
Zain threw another right hook. Jayden slipped it, pivoted left, and drove his blade toward the opening.
Zain twisted. Barely blocked.
But his eyes widened slightly.
"You're reading me."
"Maybe."
They clashed again. Jayden pushed his speed higher, feeling the passive growth activate.
**[PASSIVE GROWTH ACTIVATED]**
**[Speed: 12.1 → 12.4 units]**
Faster. But not enough.
Zain's fist caught him in the ribs. Pain exploded.
Jayden stumbled. Zain pressed forward.
A barrage of strikes. Jayden blocked three. Dodged two. Took one to the shoulder.
"Enough!" Kael called.
They separated, both breathing hard.
"Winner: Zain Corvus." Kael marked her tablet. "But Jayden showed significant adaptation. Good."
Zain walked away without a word.
Jayden clutched his ribs. Not broken, but bruised.
Marcus helped him to the side. "You okay?"
"Yeah. He's just... really strong."
"No shit."
The sparring continued. Elena demolished her opponent in thirty seconds. Drake lasted two minutes against another Expert before losing.
By the end, Kael had her rankings.
"Top five based on current performance:" She read from her tablet. "One: Elena Northstar. Two: Zain Corvus. Three: Jayden Cross."
Murmurs rippled through the group.
"Three?" Drake said. "He lost!"
"He also adapted mid fight and increased his speed noticeably." Kael's tone was sharp. "Growth rate matters as much as current strength."
She dismissed them. "Tomorrow, 6 AM. Essence refinement training. Don't be late."
Outside, the sun was setting.
Jayden, Marcus, and Cinna walked back to the main campus.
"Third place," Marcus said. "Not bad for a Novice."
"I got destroyed."
"You lasted three minutes against someone almost at Master rank. That's impressive."
Cinna was quiet.
"What's wrong?" Jayden asked.
"I'm ranked fifteenth. Dead last." She looked down. "I don't belong here."
"Yes, you do." Jayden stopped. "You kept me and Marcus alive in that dungeon. Your barriers saved your life. Your healing saved ours. Rank doesn't define worth."
"But I'm so weak "
"For now." Marcus grinned. "Six months ago, Jayden couldn't even manifest a blade. Look at him now. You'll grow too."
Cinna's eyes watered slightly. "You really think so?"
"I know so." Jayden started walking again. "We're a team. We rise together."
They reached the dorms as stars appeared.
Tomorrow would bring new training. New pain. New growth.
But tonight, Jayden allowed himself a moment of pride.
He'd fought Zain Corvus nearly at Master rank and survived.
Six months ago, that would've been impossible.
*Six months from now?*
His eye pulsed faintly in the darkness.
*I'll be unstoppable.*
**End of Chapter 11**
**[ADVANCED CLASS STATUS: Jayden ranked 3rd out of 15. Lost to Zain but showed adaptation. Speed increased to 12.4 units. Team morale: High. Next training: Essence refinement.]**
