Chapter 4 - A BREATHER BEFORE CHAOS

Chapter 4 – A Breather Before Chaos

The morning air was crisp and bright, carrying the scent of freshly baked bread and winter pine. Clara stretched lazily, relieved that today wasn't assigned as a volunteer task.

"Finally!" she exclaimed as Sara joined her in the kitchen. "No ladder mishaps, no decorating chaos. Just a peaceful day… hopefully."

Sara laughed, picking up a basket. "Peaceful? With you? We'll see. Let's at least get your groceries done before you start overthinking."

The two friends walked through the bustling town streets, weaving through the holiday market stalls. Shops overflowed with sparkling decorations, warm treats, and cheerful chatter. Clara couldn't help but smile at the festive atmosphere, letting herself relax for the first time in days.

As they entered a small grocery store, Sara whispered, "Did you hear about the mayor's banquet last night? The one Ethan went to? Apparently, he almost burned the dessert table."

Clara blinked, then rolled her eyes. "Why am I not surprised? The guy can't even handle a small kitchen."

Sara giggled, leaning closer. "Oh come on, he's not that bad. You just act like he's a disaster magnet."

Clara snorted, picking up a tin of cocoa. "He's… complicated. And stubborn."

Meanwhile, across town, Ethan pushed open the door to his sister's apartment. The young girl ran to hug him instantly, her laughter filling the small space. "Ethan! You're finally here!"

He ruffled her hair gently, smiling. "I told you I'd come today. How was school?"

As he helped her with homework, arranging little ornaments for her own mini Christmas tree, Ethan allowed himself a quiet moment of reflection. The town, the holidays, and the tasks ahead all felt lighter in the warmth of family.

Back at the grocery store, Clara and Sara continued their shopping and gossiping, laughing over small town rumors and teasing friends they both knew. It was ordinary, mundane, yet perfect in its simplicity — a moment of peace before the storm of tasks, emotions, and fate that awaited them.

By the time they left the store, their baskets filled with festive treats and groceries, Clara felt a renewed sense of energy. Tomorrow would bring new assignments, new challenges, and, of course, the inevitable reunion with Ethan.

She glanced at Sara, whispering, "I just hope this holiday season doesn't get more… complicated."

Sara grinned knowingly. "Oh, it will. You'll see."
