Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT THAT BROKE TRUST

Chapter 10 – The Night that Broke Trust

The snow fell quietly, but Clara's thoughts were loud. She had waited months for answers, and tonight, she would demand them.

"Ethan… I need to know. What actually happened that night? The award night…" Her voice was barely more than a whisper, yet each word trembled with years of doubt.

Ethan's hand tightened around hers. "Clara… you have to understand, I—"

"Just tell me everything. I need to know why it looked like you…" She swallowed hard, words sticking in her throat. "…took advantage of someone. How could you even—"

Ethan's eyes went dark with hurt. "Clara, I would never. Never. You know me. You know I could never hurt anyone that way. But…" He paused, the weight of her accusation hitting him harder than any anger. "You didn't believe me. Not then. Not even you… my best friend."

Clara flinched. His words were sharp, slicing through her shame. "I… I thought… I saw what everyone saw. I wanted to trust you, I did… but…" She looked down, guilt twisting her stomach. "It looked so real, Ethan. I thought—"

"You thought I did what? That I forced her?" he interrupted softly, voice breaking. "Clara, do you know how that feels? To have your best friend, the one person I trusted above all, think that of me?"

Clara's throat burned. She couldn't answer. The silence pressed against them like ice.

Ethan exhaled slowly, steadying himself. "It wasn't me," he said finally. "It was Vivian."

Clara froze. "Vivian?"

"Yes," he said, voice tight. "She… she's always wanted me for herself. She hated how close we are. That night… she set it up. She spilled the drink on her dress, asked me to help her—naive, kind-hearted me, I did. She gave me water laced with drugs to make me appear… unstable. And she set up cameras so everyone could see a manipulated version of what she wanted them to see."

Clara's mind spun. "So… it wasn't real?"

"No. I never touched her. Never forced her. I tried to help her. But…" His voice cracked. "…you didn't believe me. Everyone else believed the lie. Even you."

Clara felt her chest constrict. "I… I'm so sorry, Ethan. I should have trusted you. I…"

He shook his head, pain etched on his face. "It's not your fault. You believed what you saw. But… it hurts, Clara. It really hurts when the one person you expect to trust you… can't."

Clara reached for his hand. "I do trust you. I… I finally understand."

Ethan's eyes softened. "I know. That's why I came back. To fix this. To make sure you know the truth."

For the first time in months, the icy knot in Clara's chest loosened. The truth was heavy, yes, but it also freed them.

They sat in the falling snow, side by side, letting the silence carry away the shadows of lies. The town was quiet, but their hearts were loud.

Somewhere on the hill, the Wishing Bell gleamed faintly in the distance, untouched and patient, as if waiting for the next step in their story.
