Chapter 63 - Stormbound Eyes

For a long moment, nobody moved.

The clearing was a mess of trampled grass, scorch marks, shards of ice, and bodies — not monsters, but players. The Iron Vow guild was nowhere near the organized wall of steel they had been just minutes before. They were gasping, clutching wounds, or fleeing through the treeline in pure panic.

All because of one creature.

The Storm-Affinity Lynx stood on the corpse of the last man who hadn't run fast enough. Its fur crackled with thin lightning veins, each spark crawling across its muscular frame. Its eyes — sharp, electric gold — locked onto the team with an intelligence far too focused for a random mob.

Kalyani stared, frozen mid-ready stance.

"…It killed him," she whispered.

Jonathan swallowed hard. Tiger Cub pressed against his leg, low growl rumbling.

Rezion's knuckles whitened on his staff. Ice Husky's breath came out in trembling clouds.

Riley stood tall, bow lowered but ready.

Not afraid.

Studying it.

Because this wasn't a normal Azure Wilds threat.

This was something far rarer.

STORMBOUND LYNX — LV 12

ELITE spirit

Affinity: Storm / Wind / Lightning

Lumi drifted tensely near Riley's cheek, glowing hard enough to cast clear shadows. Luna crept halfway behind Riley's boot, eyes wide, tiny horn sparking with nervous light.

The lynx sniffed the air, tail flicking — not aggressive… not passive… something else.

Calculating.

Testing.

Waiting.

Kalyani whispered, "Shouldn't it run? It just killed someone. It should be retreating."

Jonathan nodded quickly. "Right. Elites always disengage after a fatal strike. That's basic mob logic."

Rezion frowned, voice trembling. "S-so why is it still here?"

Riley's eyes narrowed.

"Because it hasn't decided what we are yet."

The lynx's ears twitched — like it understood.

A ripple of lightning rolled down its spine.

Kalyani's Fire Cat hissed. Ice Husky whimpered. Tiger Cub's fur puffed out like a terrified dandelion.

Riley raised a hand gently.

"Don't move."

The lynx's gaze snapped instantly to him.

For a heartbeat, the entire clearing felt electrified — charged and silent.

Then Riley whispered:

"…I want it."

Kalyani nearly choked.

Rezion blinked hard.

Jonathan stared.

"R-Riley?" Jonathan sputtered. "Did you just say—"

"Yes," Riley said calmly. "I want to capture it."

Kalyani whispered to Fire Cat, "…We're following a psychopath."

Rezion just squeaked.

Jonathan whispered, "Please have a plan."

Riley stepped forward.

THE LYNX APPROACHES

Grass crackled under Riley's boots.

The lynx crouched — not to pounce, but to ready its decision.

Thunder rumbled faintly overhead.

Lumi flared to Riley's left.

Luna pressed herself to his right boot, trembling.

Riley's voice stayed steady.

"We're not enemies. You didn't attack us. You attacked them."

Kalyani hissed, "Riley, maybe don't talk to it like a person—"

The lynx growled softly — almost annoyed.

Okay.

So it understood tone.

Maybe understood intent.

Good.

Riley slowly lowered his bow completely and spread his hands open at his sides.

"I know why you killed him," Riley murmured. "He tried to stab you. He didn't respect the Wilds. We do."

The lynx's eyes narrowed, golden sparks crackling.

A test.

A question.

Are you prey?

Or partner?

Riley took another step.

The others panicked silently.

Rezion mouthed he's insane.

Kalyani mouthed we knew that already.

Jonathan mouthed we believe in you please don't die.

Riley didn't stop.

The lynx finally growled — low, thunderous — and stepped off the corpse. Lightning flickered along its claws.

Another step.

Now ten meters.

Then eight.

Then five.

The lynx lifted its head… and inhaled.

Wind swirled tightly around its body, spiraling upward. Jonathan flinched.

"R-Riley—!"

"I know," Riley murmured.

Because he'd seen this before.

In his previous life, in the late game, when elites broke behavior patterns and started acting like mini-bosses.

The lynx was reading their fear.

Riley breathed out slowly.

"I'm not afraid of you," he whispered.

The air hummed.

Lumi floated forward, glowing aggressively — protective.

Luna chirped nervously, trying to stand strong but hiding behind Riley's leg again.

The lynx leaned in—

Right into Riley's space.

Close enough that its breath warmed his cheek.

Close enough that a spark snapped between its fur and his armor.

Jonathan gagged on fear.

Kalyani whispered, "Oh gods oh gods oh gods—"

Then the lynx did something none of them expected.

It nudged Riley's hand.

Riley blinked.

"…You're letting me?"

The lynx growled — low but not hostile — and pressed its forehead gently against his palm.

Kalyani nearly fainted.

Rezion squeaked.

Jonathan swore under his breath.

Riley's eyes softened.

"Alright," he whispered. "Let's make this official."

He pulled a low-tier Azure Binding Charm from his inventory — shaped like a band of coiled wind.

Lumi hovered, vibrating with excitement.

Luna's horn flickered hopefully.

Riley raised the charm slowly.

The lynx didn't move.

Not even a twitch.

A perfect stillness.

Silent consent.

Riley brought the charm to the lynx's neck and—

CRACK!

The lynx whirled, lightning exploding around it in a circular burst.

Riley stumbled back—

Everyone screamed—

A shockwave threw dust and leaves into the air—

But the lynx didn't flee.

Instead, it spun and snarled at the treeline — hackles raised.

Because—

There were footsteps.

Lots of footsteps.

Riley's head snapped toward the sound.

Kalyani's eyes widened. "Oh you have GOT to be kidding me—"

Rezion whispered, terrified, "More players."

Jonathan gripped Tiger Cub. "That wasn't Iron Vow… was it?"

No.

It wasn't.

Riley recognized the voices immediately — angry, exhausted, humiliated.

The ones who had fled.

Iron Vow had regrouped.

Their leader's voice carried through the trees, furious:

"THERE THEY ARE! Kill them AND the elite! That lynx is OURS!"

Riley's jaw tightened.

The lynx growled — a sound like lightning cracking.

It stepped in front of Riley.

Protectively.

Jonathan whispered, "It… It's helping us?"

Riley didn't smile, didn't blink.

"It recognizes enemies," he murmured.

"And so do I."

He lifted Shimmerstring once more.

Lumi flared beside him.

Luna's horn shone bright.

Fire Cat hissed.

Ice Husky braced.

Tiger Cub roared its tiny, indignant roar.

The lynx crouched low — electricity radiating.

Riley whispered:

"Let's finish this."

The Guild burst from the treeline.
